Dear Shoestring,
You were the greatest ride I've ever had. I loved your graceful loops, and your silky smooth axial rolls. You took commands better than any hound, and only snapped when asked. Wow, did you snap, I remember our first time: I gently slid the joystick back and then moved both sticks sharply to the left. I let out a yelp with a mix of excitment and complete terror you snapped faster than a junk yard dog. The adrenaline surged through my body like a wave of boiling oil. And now, it's over. We had a great romance, you dancing in the sky and me on the tarmac. You were the fastest I've ever had.
So beautiful smooth and shiney. A Christmas gift from my wife, secretly built by my father. A family treasure to be sure.
I doubt you will ever forgive me for botching the deadstick. It was my fault for not watching the time but I was so enjoying our dance of love. My fault for allowing your speed to drop too much.. for trying to milk a little more distance out of your waivering inertia. Alas, you are broken and torn. I'll never forget you but I'll darn sure yank out your electronics and put in your clone as soon as possible. Thanks for the ride.

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
Hi guys,
The landing gear is a bit weak, I was flying in a windy day, but not consistant it was like an on/off wind thingy.
And after a bounce the LG delaminated and is now very springy.
And for the OS81a it's a good fit but not fast enough for my taste.
So I'm going back to a 2 stroker, and I will remove the 35 grams of lead I put on her tail at the same time.

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
I have finished my Shoestring, It took me one extra year with rethinking the project.
I bought on EBAY what I was told a Nelson 50 with a pipe,
While not as powerful as the Nelson Quickie50040 size engines it would have been powerful and could turn big props.
Turns out the engine was a Q500 .40 engine and with the included pipe it turned 18.000 with a APC 9x6. I tried a couple of other pipes but the engine did not perform.
Nelson told me to run his muffler so I did, 20.300 directly so I modified the plane forthe Nelson Muffler. 21K is themax rpm limit for a APC 9x6, I might try some pylon props,
Analuminumspinner is required with these RPMs.
I use a Jett fuel tank with a liner, Requirement to shut the fuel line off took a little thinking until I turned the fuel inlet/ needle around.
Now I have the fuel line filter on the outside of the cowl, Maybe not so pretty but practical for filling the tank withthe Jett tanker.
I also added cooling outlets and redirectedairflow in the cowling. This airframe might have to much drag for this setup to work but it will be interesting to give it a try.
The Nelson .40 do not have a carburetor, only a air shut off. It can be used to bring the RPMs down from +20K to 15K or richen the engine little if it feels lean in flight.
Planned dead stick landings will be the way of landing.
This might not be an practical approach but it sure will be fun, nobody claims a supercharged hotrod to be practical either.
I have the GP 1/4 scale in a box, I will try that one withmy Syssa 30 Gas engine.

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
Hi,
Mine is still flying great.
Fitted now with an OS55 + 11X6 G-SONIC + JETT red exhaust fitted inside the fuselage.
I can fly this thing all day long, and now I have mastered the landings with it, 3 point landings 90% of the time!
Flying speed is around 120 mph in a mild dive, and around a 100 in level flight.
Love this airplane !

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
here is my 61 size Shoestring after a rebuild, it has an 61FX, it really should have a 75 in it,, I call it the ShooFly because the bottom was messed up pretty good in the crash so when I rebuilt it I hacked up the bottom, but if you don't know the design well you would never notice,,
yes I need a Cowl but I can't find one anywhere
this design has fantastic ground handling, at least mine does, I can touch down with a normal landing, go to full throttle and she will stick to the ground for 200ft at full throttle then lift off, really fun,
as you can see the Yellow is not correct but it's all the Shop had

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
I'm still flying mine too...great fun! Since the last time I posted here (June 2010), I think I tamed the beast as far as ground handling and landing speed. Recall I had added a shim on one side of the LG to toe it in a hair. That helped a little. Since then I switched to a MAS from APC prop. That really seems to have done the trick. She doesn't try to ground loop now. Speed in the air is still pretty quick...I did not build it for all out speed, but it scoots nicely with an OS 71 Surpass II. For landings, I deploy a little flaperon with some up elevator coupled to control the pitch down. That slows the plane for me to make decent landings now. The LG has delaminated a little more, and I'd like to find a replacement from another ARF. I'd paint it Shoe yellow to keep it from sticking out like a sore thumb. Oh, I got a NIB 60 size Shoe off here! Have not built it yet, but except for a busted wing tip, it looks great and I think it will be even better than this smaller one. Jon

I am putting a Saito .91 in mine. The only photos I've seen are 4 strokes mounted sideways. Looks good.
but some are mounting them inverted, I wonder what that looks like?

Hi guys
I almost finished mine, but the fuse and cowl are too bulky for running a 10x6 prop
So I can forget the Jett 56
I have a 71 surpass II laying in a drawer but decided to go with an alpha 81, turning a 12x10, upside down

Lookin good Mike! Anxious to hear how yours handles, and I suspect like a rocket! Let's hear a report on the maiden, and how about some video too, haha. I haven't done vid of mine yet. Congrats, good luck, enjoy. Jon

Thanks. It is fast. A bit touchy. I will move the CoG forward to the recommended 92mm. I will add more expo and maybe less throw on the ailerons. Still adjusting the engine, bought it used off ebay. I need to tach the engine. Sounds like it might be over-revving with the 13x8 three blade. I bought a 2 blade spinner. Might try a 12x12 prop.

Sweet !
After a couple of "nose over" I mounted it sideways
It's fast but not that fast, makes good pattern flying and looks great in the sky

ont="Times New Roman"]The 81 was not idling correctly and most of the time it was landing deadstick
on the side it works perfect, turning a 12x10 @ 10k rpm
But now the cowl is ugly
The Saito should be stronger

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
I tried a few different props: 13x8 three blade, APC 13x9, APC 13x11. Only about 7mph between them all. Right around 100mph. I will try a 13x10 MA S-2 series.
I agree with other people that this plane isn't really all that fast. My Revolver with a Saito .72 is nearly as fast as this plane with a .91.

Mike, how's the landings? Mine are quick! I slow it down with some flaperon and am gonna try more to slow it even more. It uses up our short grass runway pretty fast. I am just guessing your landings are quicker with slightly more weight and those high pitch props? Jon

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
I don't use flaperons. I land hot on two wheels. It never bounces but sticks down firmly. Grass runway. With all the rain it's not been mowed like normal and it grows faster so the tallish grass has probably helped me slow down.
Our runway is 800' or so. But if our runway was shorter I'd have to rethink it.

Me? I fly it all the time. Using a 13x11 prop and 30% nitro. Will go back to the 3-blade 13x8 and 15% when this free gallon of 30% is gone.

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
Everybody still flying theirs? Mine goes like snot on a OS46FX. Good for scaring the junkyard dog, and small children. Whadda screamer.
I've started getting used to landing long when there's no wind. The Shoestring comes in flat, and bleeds off excess speed very slowly. If you get it right, it will land and roll to a stop before the midfield turn-off. If you get it wrong, it will just keep on scooting by, right down through the frog hair at the far end of the runway. Man, what a slippery plane!
My favorite maneuver is big giant loops, with a nice, crisp snap roll on top, leave it hanging for a half-second before pulling on through to finish the loop. Fun stuff!
