Savage X - Sudden lack of performance - Part I
hello fellow truckers
this is really strange wots hapenin to my truck. today i decided to retune my engine. so i set the carb back to factory settings and starting to retune. everythin was going fine. after 10-20 mins the truck started to build up some good speed. healthy smoke coming out, timely gear shifting, good sound etc.
then suddenly my truck gets real slow. no matter how much throttle i give it. it runs but very slow. at first i thought i stripped my spur gear. but the spur gear was fine. so i took the WHEELS OFF THE GROUND and gave it some throttle and it seemed perfect. and ON FULL THROTTLE, ALL FOUR WHEELS MOVED FAST ENOUGH TO MAKE WHEELS GO THIN. but when i put it back on the ground, it doesnt move fast at all. what going on here.
so far i checked:
--transmission<<<<<< near enough brand new
--set screws<<<<<<< they all seem to be there
--spur gear<<<<<<<< all good
--fuel tank and pipe lines for any leakage - none found
plz plz plz - somebody out there - help me out
UPDATE 3(1) - August - 2006
-- took both front and rear diffs apart - no damage
-- dropped engine in my other truck's body - runs fine(so my engine's clutch bell, shoes are fine in that case)
-- slipped pads
UPDATE 3(2) - August - 2006
i really appreciate all u guyz who have posted and tried to sort my truck out but unfortunately its just not hapening. so i ve given up for now - i guess this is part of the hobby we r in to - i will try again next weekend and try fixing it. also appreciate the idea of taking my truck up to my lhs but i really dont think thats a good idea as they are known to do more damage than any good. atleast mine are.
i plan to rip the whole truck apart for next weekend and reassemble it( a very unnecessary move but i m left with no other choice - this is pure madness). hopefully i will come across problem and fix it along the way.
amwhite2005
i checked my slipper pads as soon as i read ur post - i was really hopin that was the cause but they look good as new. the tranny case is immaculate. the truck is only 4-5 months old and well taken care of.
THERE WILL BE A Savage X - Sudden lack of performance - PART II with pix and actual video of how my truck is when on and off the ground(hopefully that would help all u tryin to help)

Be sure to tune for the changing temp and humidity conditions. I do not know if the humidity varies from day to day in London, but if it is humid one day and dry the next, you may have to resort to tuning by changing plugs.
It's really simple. For humid days, switch to a hotter plug and then retune the engine with the needles. If the aid bvecomes dryer, switch back to a medium (or colder plug) and again, tune the needles to the new plug.
Aside from that, be sure to check what everyone else is suggesting.

wot i dont understand is that when the truck's wheels are off the ground, the clutch engages fine and wheels spin mad fast at full throttle. its like its got no diff, transmission, clutch or acceleration issues whatsoever. its when its on ground it starts getting sluggish. really sluggish. its makin me go flippin mad - i cant pin point the problem. i kno for sure someone here has the answer to my prayer.

Just a guess. Are the reciever batteries dead?

Had one do this once. Took the carb apart, blew nitro cleaner through it,put it back together and it ran fine. Must of had crud in the needle and seat.
Have you made sure your getting full throttle? Sometimes those carbs stick.

yes the carb is opening up and i am getting full throttle hence the reason why the wheels are spinning like they should when wheels off the ground.

This is about the same as what was happening to me but mine would not climb at all. Did you tighten the slipper clutch screw? I usually tighten it all the way then back off 1/4 of a turn but most run it tightened all the way. So try it!

Are your dogbones still intact?
The other 2 gears by the diff (13tooth and 43 tooth)?
Sorry for the obvious, but i'm running out of ideas, hope you get it fixed.

Might fix the problem...
Does it make any strange sounds when you run it on the ground? Any grinding or anything. I dont know if the pipe will make any difference, has it cracked or anything. I had a pipe crack on me and it really dented performance.
Is the tranny case imaculate? It hasn't cracked or anything? The bulkheads and diff housing are all fine? Drive cups showing any sign of wear?
A big guess, but nothing else is right...Have the tired come unstuck from the wheels? (Very unlikly, but I suppose it could happen, but you would have probably noticed it)
Is the slipper pad toast?

I cant think what the LHS are going to think of. Here you have the knowledge of the World, they only have the knowedge of years experience, which most of the people here have. They will just go through everything we have said. How old is it, if it is under a year then they have to do something, and if they cant find the problem then they should give you a new one.
