Hey Wesley,
Welcome to the wonderful world of WW!! [link=http://www.balsausa.com]Balsa USA [/link] has many great choices. I'd probably recomend the Eindecker, Taube, or Pup as good kits to start WW1 in. The Pup flies just like a trainer too I understand. I've got their .90 Eindecker, and it's a lot of fun! I'm also building their Bristol M-1c. The instructions are a bit un-clear at times, but if you've any bulding experience at all, you should have no problems. Of course, their new Fokker DVII is sharp too! So much balsa, so little time. There are othersout there as well [link=http://www.proctor-enterprises.com/]Proctor[/link], [link=http://www.arizonamodels.com/]Arizona Model Aircrafters[/link], Glen Torence Models, [link=http://www.funaero.com/]Fun Aero [/link] to name a few. But Balsa USA stuff is very popular, and they're nice folks to deal with too (not that most of the others are not).

Have a look at our [link=http://RC Dawn Patrol]www.bealmear.com/dawn_patrol[/link] site for more WW1 RC stuff.

Hope this helped some. Good luck!

What do you mean by scale?
Most of the BUSA is not true scale, but I have the Taube and the Dr1 and they are wonderful planes. They look good from 15 feet and fly great. I plan on building more, like 1/3 Sopwith and Nieuport 28
You might also look at Dynaflight SE5a - again, not true scale but great to build and fly.

If you want true scale and have $$$$ look at Proctor kit. They are about the best.

HOW SCALE- do you mean LOOK LIKE ? or DETAIL SCALE. it all depends on how close you want the lookers to be? IN THE AIR or at a SCALE CONTEST ?? big difference

I WANT TRUE SCALE NOT A HURRY UP KIT SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO TAKE TIME, DOESN'T HAVE TO BE DONE TOMORROW. I WANT IT TO BE AS PERFECT AS I CAN GET IT. IF ANYONE HAS SOME WEBSITES OF SOME SIDE PROFILES OF A FOKKER DVIII PLEASE POST THEM

Here we are back to the age old question of "What is scale?" Anyway....

The Balsa USA kits are very good, and not what most people would descibe as "hurry up kits", and like others have already said here, "They look good from 15 feet". Most can be detailed as much as you'd like. I think the DVIII may have an "abrieviated" cockpit though, but I may be wrong. If you looking for true scale, I'd say you're probably looking for Proctor more than likely , but they don't make a DVIII, or [link=http://www.gtmodels.com/web/pages/kit.htm]Glen Torence Models[/link]. The have a very scale (and complete) 1/4 scale DVIII for about $800! [sm=eek.gif]

If you do a Google Search on the Fokker DVIII, I'm sure you'd come up with all kinds of info. For reference material, the Windsock Data Files are excellent. If you're thinking about doing something to compete with (scale wise), collect all you're data first, then compare what you have (three views, etc.) to kits or plans that can be built to your documentation.

And remember. "A scale project is never done, you just quit working on it."

I am just about finished with my first WWI plane, a Balsa USA DVIII. Real good kit. I normally build WWII Scale but I wanted something different and more of a fun flyer. The plane may not be true scale but unless you are competing who cares and if you look at the scale masters Mike Winters Pup is a Balsa Usa kit. Modifications can do wonders. Of course if you have the time and the money Procktor kits are prety complete.
Good Luck

Whayden,
Since this is your FIRST ww1 scale project, I'd highly recommend one of the BUSA kits. I've got the Nieuport 28 framed up and almost ready to cover. It's been a very rewarding build (it's been an on/off project since late October). These kits may not be absolute scale, but you can detail them as much as you'd like. They're a good start for the price. If later on you want to go and spend a lot more money on another "more scale" kit, that's up to you, but BUSA is a good start.
If you don't have the room for quarter scale, or desire to build something smaller, check out Fun Aero. Great laser cutting and very nice models.

The BUSA or Funaero SE5a would be a good first WW1 model. The SE5a has proportions that would make ground handling easy. The BUSA Pup and Nieuport 28 also have fairly easy ground handling. The DVIII and DR1 are pretty tricky on takeoffs and landings.

Whayden
I am finishing up my first WWI plane, a 1/5 Proctor Nieuport 11. If scale, detail, and quality are what you are after, along with top notch customer service, Proctor is going to be hard to beat. These kits go together like a fine Swiss watch. Everything on the plane works just as the real plane. Their kits are not cheap, my Nieuport was around $400, and I don't want to even begin to think what I have tied up in extras. They offer the VK line which is a little more reasonably priced. Same detail but you have to do a little more of the work, have fiberglass cowls, and they are generally a little smaller. You might also want to check out www.arizona.models.com. They have a wide offering of WWI planes and most are available in a wide range of sizes running from 1/3 to 1/6 scale. I don't know anything about their quality.
I have seen the BUSA planes at the Toledo Show and they are very nice for standoff scale. I was going to do their Sopwith Pup until I found out the kit did not include rigging, I have a tendency to get anal retentive with the scale/detail issue.

I recomend one of the Glenn Torrence kits if you want a true scale kit. He has two virsions of the DV111. The deluxe kit for around $800 and a lower cost one for about $350.
I am currently at about 70% done with his low cost kit, which I have added extra details that he offers.
Both kits are very high quality, all laser cut wood, exellent hardware package and spun alum. cowl. The plans are computer generated and are dead on dimention wise.
This is my first WW1 project, in fact it is the first kit I have built in 16 yrs.
If you follow the directions and are good at reading plans, it is a easy plane to build.
Would be glad to forward you pictures if you like.

whayden, I have no idea as to your building/flying experience but if its considerable then any WW1 project will be fine. If you want "true scale" DVII go with a Proctor kit. You won't find a better example any where.

Whayden... WW1 is a fantastic place to start scale. Balsa Usa make fine products that have been proven in kit building and flying. A lot of pilots have experience with their products and can offer help. Mike at Fun Aero has a nice line of planes that offer the new builder a chance to enter WW1 scale without a large investment. I manufacture several 1/4 scale planes that are not really geared for the beginner type. If you can handle 1/4 scale then I would recommend Balsa USA and if you do a Fokker and want to add some scale detail then I offer some mini-kits that can spruce up your model. Good luck with your project and welcome to WW1 - Glenn

Default WW I AERO reminder time again...

Dear Whayden:

The PIPE Here yet AGAIN...and do NOT forget to check out THIS site...

http://www.ww1aeroplanesinc.org/

...because if you end up being "terminally HOOKED" on WW I RC aircraft, LEO OPDYCKE is THE person to help you out!

All SORTS of SCALE DRAWINGS can be found at that site, via the ONLINE version of Leo's "Master Materials List" at http://www.ww1aeroplanesinc.org/docs...rials_list.htm ...and Leo's WORLD WAR I AERO quarterly magazine has had ALL SORTS of GREAT articles on various and wondrous WW I and Pioneer era aircraft in its pages for a goodly THREE DECADES now!

Leo's contact info (by snail-mail and phone) ARE right there at the top of the first linked site I've mentioned...and here are some MORE links to check out if you get REALLY serious about WW I MUSEUM SCALE RC aeromodeling

For KITS there's..

Proctor Enterprises at http://www.proctor-enterprises.com/

Glen Torrance Models at http://www.gtmodels.com/ with TONS of WW I Fokkers (Dr I, D VIII and NOW a Fokker D VI !!)

Mick Reeves Models with BIG Sopwith Camels and Pups at http://www.mrmodels.fsnet.co.uk/p2bipe.htm !!!

Also, Replicraft at http://www.replicraft.us.fm/ has GREAT scale drawings you can scale up for "REALLY MUSEUM scale" aircraft, and my old RC buddy HANK ILTZSCH designed the Giant Scale BRISTOL SCOUT D that's STILL available as construction plans from the AMA...at http://www.modelaircraft.org/templates/ama/plans81.asp , and look for the March 1981 issue...it's plan set no.328 for $22.50 before postage! Also, make CERTAIN to get yourself a copy of ANY of the WINDSOCK DATAFILE books for just about ANY WW I aircraft you might want to build, available from Wise Owl Books at http://www.wiseowlmagazines.com/WWI_..._Aviation.html , or for an EVEN BETTER price per book, from Hannan's Runway at http://www.hrunway.com/shop/?target=dept_3.html ...Hannan's is where I get most of MY Windsock Datafile copies from!

If you're into NIEUPORTS, head for http://mars.ark.com/~mdf/nieuport.html (it's an IDEAL example of a "fan site" that has SCADS of ONLINE-AVAILABLE Nieuport drawings for you to check out)...and for a place with TONS of WW I aircraft PHOTOS for you to check out, it's "Rosebud's WW I and Early Aviation Photo Archive" at http://members.shaw.ca/flyingaces/archive1.htm !!!

Hope YOU enjoy doin' RC the WW I way...I've got a 30% finished SCRATCHBUILT 2 inch scale (1/6th size) Fokker D VII to finish up later this year that I left off of back around 1985, and I'm planning to get a set of my buddy Hank's Giant Scale Bristol Scout D drawings from the AMA during April, for future building (hopefully starting NEXT winter)...and starting with a Balsa USA, FunAero, or Flair kit CAN and WILL get you hooked, but if you DO wish to "get more serious", check out those links I've mentioned here!

ONE last one...at http://www.angelfire.com/indie/aerostuff/eindeckero.htm is a site that COULD have you building up a Balsa USA Eindecker that's a "bit MORE scale" than the original kit builds up into!

Hope these links help you out!

Yours Sincerely,

The PIPE!

If you can scratchbuild, you are home free. WW1 types are the easiest of all to do, there is just more of them to love while doing it. Look for subjects that have at least some nose moment, largish tail surfaces, and some dihedral. I have yet to see a WW1 type that doesn't need ruddre input to make decent turns. Jim

Welcome to the world of WW1 aircraft. Other postings have indicated a lot of different sources for very good kits/plans.
If this is your first scale aircraft I only want to add one piece of advice:
WW1 pursuit aircraft with high and narrow undercarriages combined with a short fuselage can often exhibit tricky ground handling. Before committing yourself to a full-blown scale aircraft with a lot of detailing, my suggestion is that you build a somewhat simplified model in order to get acquainted with the ground handling and flying properties of this type of aircraft. One good example would be the FLAIR Puppeteer.

My suggestion for a scratch built aircraft with very nice flying qualities would be the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter. It has very good proportions for a scale aircraft. Have a look at this plan that was published in Radio Control Model World a couple of years ago:
[link=https://www.traplet.com/pages/store/action.lasso?-token.cust=12818815&-database=Products.fp3&-layout=CGI&-response=/pages/store/detail.html&id=354&-search]Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter[/link]

I saw a Sopwith Snipe at Toledo, that in my opinion was the best plane there. I haven't heard how it faired, but I am shocked that it didn't win Best of Show.

Another.

I would have to say this is some of the finest craftsmanship in an airplane I have seen out of a modeler(s). I do hope it won something. I also beleive that the person who won Best of Show deserved it as well. How do you choose?

I saw the Snipe as well and its an outstanding plane. I think (not 100% sure) that the plane was constructed by one guy (over 7 years) and the engine built by a collaborator. I think the engine builder has built at least 4 of those engines. I'm not a Snipe Expert but the plane lacks paint and markings. Perhaps that's the way the full scale plane was? If some one knows the answer I would be curious to know it. Thanks BobH.

Maybe that is why (I am speculating) that it didn't win Best of Show because of the lack of markings, or paint????

That thing was so beautiful, that I could hardly walk away from it. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent job on this plane.
I would be so nervous flying it.

In speaking with the guy who built the engine the plane is never going to be flown. It will reside in a museum in Az for the rest of it's days.

Hi everyone,
We are a new outfit called CD-Scaledesigns and we also have a few WW-1 plans and kits. We have four of our own designs in 1/6th scale available right now, Sopwith Snipe, Sopwith Pup, SE-5a and a Fokker D-VIII. Have a look if you please at...

New entries into the WWI market are always welcome! Could you provide any more info about your kits? Or even better some photos of the finished models?
