M26/46 Pershing Korea
My 6 year old daughter is bugging me for a tank of her own. When she saw this one, she nearly nagged me to death for it. LOL.
Has anyone tried this paint job yet?

This guy did, but it is not correct for the M26 Pershing, but for the M46 Patton.
Still a neat job he did.

Keep one thing in mind. This "tiger" paint scheme was used only in operations Ripper and Killer, April-May 1950 in Korea by American Army units only. It was psychological ploy based on the Chinese superstition and fear of tigers and dragons. Tanks included were M-24 Chafee, M-4A3E8 Shermans and the "new" M-46 Pattons. NO PERSHING EVER WORE THESE TIGER MARKINGS. A couple museums have Pershings with these marklings, however they are historically incorrrect and they have received many comments about them. The tank shown from Osprey in an M-46 Patton (not Pershing). It was basically a Pershing upgraded with the Continental 810 HP AV-1790 V-12 engine, replacing the Ford GAA 490 HP V-8, 90mm gun M-3 upgraded with a bore evacuator and single baffle muzzle brake and internat compensator spring, designated M-3A1. The chassis, other that modfied rear end to accomodate the new engine, and turret were the same as the Pershing. A positive ID is the rear fender muffflers with shield, sprocket raised to nearly the same level as the return rollers, compensating idler between the last road wheel and sprocket and the bore evacuator and smaller SBMB on the gun., The cal 50 MG is also relocated to an armored cover above the gunner's primary periscope sight.

Wow! Thanks for the great information. My Daughter loves the paint job on the pics.
So do you think it would be difficult to turn a HL Pershing into a M46 Patton?

Here is what I have found. Help me out here if I have made an error.
I have not been able to find a pick of the the rear fender muffflers with shield.

The rear fender mufflers are in your comparison picture but harder to see. They are the brown parts on the fender just above the rearmost return roller, road wheel and the compensating idler. The back deck is also different.
Pattoncommander had a friend make a conversion for the Tamiya Pershing, which he adapted for an HL Pershing. It looked like it was a lot of work. You'd have to do a search for the thread, unless he has the link. It looks great, but it was fairly involved.

Good comparrison pics. The sand skirts on almost all M-46s in korea were discarded. They just got in the way, collected trash that was very hard to remove and got torn up anyway. The Marines showed us the idea of folding up the two center sections and tack welding them in place on the M-26 and later M-46s. It provided stowage space for up to 30 boxes of cal 30 and 50 ammo. My unit did not do this and we also did not participate in the 2 1950 operations , so no tiger paint. Hard enough to camo that thing with all the &%$#* colors all over it. (See my evitar) Here are a couple shots of my conversion kit on a HL Pershing. Joel is not going to make any more kits and I have the second of the only two made. It was a tedious conversion, but very nice. My model is set up exactly like my tank in Korea, down to the correct USA number on the sponson boxes and stowage. The M-46 was used ONLY in Korea except for about 400 sold to Turkey and a dozen or so built in late 1952-53 that did not make shippment and were used for training. One addition was the tube over the gunner's secondary telescope. M-26 had only the u shaped hole and telescopes were always being damaged by frontal
fire. They only sat back in about 3 inches.

Tim,.
check out U tube...M-46 Patton in Korea. My M-46 (Full El-Mod) is on a test run...low battery and a less than perfect El-Mod unit restricted movement, but it's all cleared up now. If you have any intentions of converting one, I can furnish you will photos and scale drawings of the M-46 back deck, mufflers etc.

Almost any M26/M46 book will show the difference between the 2, but the New Vanguard 35 (ISBN 1 84176 202 4) written by Zaloga, Bryan, Laurier has some very clear color plates that will help you distinguish the 2 vehicles from each other. And it's a good read too without breaking the bank.

That is one incorrectly ornamened Pershing. Ft Knox also has one and Charley is always getting negative comments on it from people that know better. Bovington Museum has a correct M-46 with correct markings...at least when I was there in '92. Many people are taken up by the unusual elaborate and flashy colors and since the Pershing looks in many ways like the M-46, they simply paint it and disregard history, putting historic accuracy on the back burner....including some very prominent tank collectors.

Reply from Charley Lemons, Curator ft knox museum. I wrote and asked him about the paint job.
Bill:
It was painted in that manner at the request of the donors - the 70th Tank Battalion - for which the vehicle is marked. Since there was not M46 available, they had donated the T26E3 on exhibit outside.

RE: M26/46 Pershing Korea
Thanks PC and John,
My daughter decided on an actual 'Tiger' tank, not one just painted up like a tiger. If the conversion set ever does become available, I will definately make a M46.
Great link for decals btw.
