Default Evolution 8cc Gas Engine

Well I wonder if Horizon will release this engine in the States?

Watching one over the weekend in their BNF Mustang and it sure is a good runner! I wish I could have gotten a tach on it because it is swinging that factory 12x6 really well!

Anyone tach theirs? How are you liking it?

The 10cc engine with the new carb (latest production) is virtually the same engine. New carb makes it a winner in my book. Swinging APC 13x6 at 10.5k makes it a pretty good performer. 12x6 was over 13k as I remember....

Yes they are quite close - .46ci .59ci. - I do see the 8cc listed as pending on Horizons site - I am curious which is lighter and how close the performance is. They are super cool little engines!

I suppose when it gets right down to it, that your intended purpose/project size will have a bearing on which engine might work out better for your purposes. To that end, been playing with the 10 for a while now, and have had it in several different planes. I can tell you a good target for the 10cc engine with decent sport performance in mind will be .45 size plane around 6lbs and 650 sq in wing area.

Not sure how much smaller you would have to go with the 8cc engine to get duplicate performance.

I can tell you that both engines use the same carb.

Yeah those are the basic spec's on the BNF 8cc P-51 as well - Plenty of power and radars over 70 mph!

So it's got to be spinning that 12x6 at least 12k RPM flat out.

I wonder how one would perform with one of OS's gas glow plugs. It would be great to get rid of the ignition

The OS's don't seem to be as reliable at idle nor idle as low for extended periods (the one's I have seen) - I don't mind the extra 3.4 ounces for the ignition and not toting and charging a glow driver.

The sound (nothing worse than an electric warbird), long flight times, I love engines, no charging, no puffed batteries, no carrying around 3-4 different types of batteries and 2-3 each for 3-4 different aircraft, and with the little gassers minimal cleanup... For me; just to name a few...

With electrics you have no stinky gas can to carry,no needle valves to play with, no gas tanks to fill,no starters needed and after assembly all you need to do is push the button. And there is no clean up required at all.

Yep - Choice is good! Although I don't use a starter, haven't touched the needles in months, cleanup is one paper towel, I'm flying and their charging, and my gas can doesn't stink.

Um, reality check time. You'll be using a starter with these engines (8 & 10cc Evo). While possible to hand start, I doubt seriously you'll go long before acquiring a starter. While they start almost immediately with a starter, they'll test the patience of a saint when trying to flip start. To begin with, there's no choke....

I started one Sunday 3 times with 3-4 flips - They have pumped carbs now.

Warren, not trying to discount the fact you did what you did, but I have 2 of them, and have for the last 2-3 seasons now (since they were introduced). One is original, the other was converted to the new carb when it became available last fall. Pretty familiar with them.... -Al

Thanks Al - I am specifically curious about the 8cc's power and weight as I have heard rumors it is almost 2 ounces lighter - I have probably 20+ gallons through my 10 and 15 Evo's and have run them since early 2012 as a part of the beta release team: So it's not my first rodeo.

I forgot.
Electrics also don't have serious vibration and need a hole to spew out that nasty hot gas while running.
I normally switch back and forth between gas and electric. If you leave a gas job sit for awhile you have a real refurbish job.With electric all you need to do is recharge.
I normally get out a gas job because I am bored and need a challange.

Dirtybird you must be bored since you've nothing better to do than hijack a thread asking about a particular engine and use it to justify to yourself and others how wonderfully you've done choosing electric and how superior it is to gas and/or glow.

I fly both, I have even flown diesel - They all have their pluses and minuses...

But then as Donald Trump says,"you started it".
I would really like to know it one of those little engines will run well on a gas glow plug.
My NGH26 runs and idles real well on one.

Wow that stinks - Heal well! One of our members tried the GGT plug and said it didn't work well - May be a compression issue...???

Ran the little guy on it's first tank today!

Wow she runs great! Idles 2200ish very reliably and it peaks the stock 12x6 prop at 9100/9200 right now. Had to go 1.5 turns on on the low for reliable idle/transition and top end was close out of the box.

Not much smell if your careful in preventing it. The use of pure gas makes for a great fuel that does not go bad like regular gas does. Also NO gum forms in carb so it is a great storage fuel. The engine will need very little tuning once broke in. Some guys go to electric because they just do not get good at tuning a gas engine. PS I do have 2 electric airplanes....prefer to fly gas ones.

4 flights on her now - Idle a solid and steady 1800 rpm and max is up to 9700 rpm on the stock 12x6 Evo prop.


Great engine!
