Default PILOT RATINGS AND ENDORSMENTS

OK all you r/c guys out there, I know that aviation is in your blood or you wouldn't be spending so much time building these little airplanes and getting all excited about getting them into the air just to get that thrill we all get when that little engine screams by in a high speed, low level pass!! It dont get any better than that, so who flys the full scales and what certificates, ratings, or endorsements do you carry? I'll start; I started flying full scale in 1981, r/c in 1982, I hold a commercial license, multi-engine, land and sea, with an instrument rating. I have about 1000 hrs of flying time and am checked out to fly in Cessna 150 taildragger,172,182 310,402,414, Beechcraft Bonanza,Barron,Skipper Piper Comanche,Seneca,Cherokee, and Lake Amphibian. I have to say that I truly love aviation Now lets here from the rest of you guys

I soloed on July 9, 1968 almost a year before my gov't paid cross country in southeast asia. I retired with about 22,000 hrs and rated in Private Glider, Commercial SEL, ATP MEL, Boeing 727, 737, 757, 767 Airbus A319, 320, 321, and grandfathered with Rotorcraft/Helicopter. I started modeling when I was about 9 and didn't really get into R/C until I came back from Viet Nam in 1970. I bought a three channel 4 wire servo rig from World Engines.

When I got out of the Army I went to work in Alaska flying Helicopters. Then, went to work for a great little airline named "Wien Air Alaska" The rest of the story as they say is history.

Grew up around airplanes since the day I was born. My father has been flying since 1963 and the bug was always in me, but somewhere between middle school and high school, I took it for granted. We even had a 1959 Cessna 150, while I was growing up and I didn't have a desire to learn to fly. I was into Dirt bikes and hanging out with my friends.

Fortunately, RC saved my aviation life. After college I started flying RC and only really liked scale RC planes. Around this same time, my Father had retired and purchased another Cessna 150 and I had the opportunity to take ground school for free, due to the fact I had been teaching for the local community college. With the encouragement of my father, I used his 150 and got my license in 2004. My father is now restoring his third Cessna 150 and it's been a lot of fun. I have over 500 hours, so I get up a lot and with all the great grass strips around our home base of KJXN, I love to go out and visit my pilot friends.

RC is my outlet to flying planes that I probably will not be able to fly, due to the cost factors, and is also a way for me to learn more about the history of aviation, especially WWII aircraft.

Ok, this will bring out a lot of interesting back grounds.

Isoloed in 1964 in a C-150. Joined the Army in '65 and was rated in the O-1 Birddog, T-42 (Baron) and Beaver. Also R/W in the H-13, and UH-1 B &D and Helicopter instructor.Ihad over 800 combat hours in UH-1s in Viet Nam, and 800 + hours as a R/W instructor (Army).

Ratings: ATP Multi-Eng Land, Type ratings in Short 3-30, DA-20, DHC-7, DHC-8, Commercial privilidges rotary wing, and glider. Held Instructer ratings in single eng land, Multi-eng land, instrument. I retired in 2001 with 25,000 + hours.

I started building models in 1949. Started in R/C in 1978 and have been addicted ever since. I have to blame my interest in model aviation early on to leading to my career as a pilot.

Dash, you must have been building models when you were 3 years old.

Maybe it was 1950 or 51. I was born in '41, and Iknow I took a model to school in the fourth grade and Ihad built several prior to that. These were solid balsa type models that were about a dime a kit (I didn't say how they looked, and of course they didn't fly). Iknow Ihad a solid hard wood (I think it must have been bass wood) model of a Globe Swift at about the same time. It was painted orange.

Time sure flies, huh?

I started R/C flying in 1981 at age 13. I didn't decide to start flying until 1993 when I started flight school at Spartan in Tulsa, Ok. I currently am rated as SEL, COMM, INST, MEL, and CFII and have about 2000hrs. I've been checked out in Cessna 150, 152 ,172, 172rg, 182, 210, Piper 140, Warrior I and II, 180, Archer, Arrow and turbo Arrow, and Geronimo, Beech Duchass and D-18, Diamond Katana. My favorite is still a 152 with a STOL kit and 150 HP STC.

Got my license in SE Land in 1981 from a C-152. Got my Instrument in 2008, in a C-172, working on my commercial. I have Hi Performance, and Multi-engine Instrument ratings. Who has time for RC, when I fly all over the Southwest in a Mooney??

I started RC in 1967 at age 15 with a no-name trainer and a Controlaire 10-channel reed set. Built a Sterling PT-19 and started flight training in my spare time while in the Army in Korea, joined an Air Force flying club at K-16 air base 1974. Started instructing in 1980, then got into charter and corporate ops. I do aircraft management, sales and fly as a contractor. CFI-AISME, ATP, 15K+hours, typed in Citation 500-series and King Air 300/350.

Flying's still fun, but it sure has changed![:-]

I also call KJXN home! [8D]

Started in R/C in about 2004 on just a basic trainer.

Got my PPL in May? 2004. Now have ASEL AMEL CFII Comm IFR and typed in the Casa 212 (SIC). Have about 1600 hours now. Work as a flight instructor and smoke-jumper co-pilot. Have flown a handful of small planes including about 550hrs tailwheel. Working on getting checked out in the Cessna 340 so I can work on the charter line in the winters. Also hope to get my glider add-on this year.

Started RC in 1978 with a 4 channel futaba and an Aeroflyte Nova.

Started flying real planes in 1981 at the age of 16.

Commercial licence in 1985, Instructor rating in 1987 - IFR in 1988.

Flew as a part time instructor between 88 and 2000 with a school that specialised in aerobatic instruction - did over 3000 hours of aeros and over 10,000 logged spins...

The entire time I was also having a career as Police Officer in Sydney Australia.. in 1995 transferred to the Police Aviation Unit.
Between 1995 and 2008 I flew mainly with the Police, got an ATPL licence, and also a USA ATP for Jets.

Flew all models of Citations, C208 Caravans, Pilatus PC12s and AS350 Squirrel helicopters with the Police.

In 2008 was made an offer I couldn't refuse and left thePolice to start flying a Hawker 900XP (HS-125) for a company in Perth.

(That is what pays for all the toys now...)

About 7000 hours fixed wing time, 2000 on Multi engine Jet,

500 Helicopter hours

3000 additional hours as helicopter observer,

I go to Flight Safety in Wichita Kansas every year in January for recurrent training on the Hawker..

Love flying the big ones, but love the RC's far more!!

Man, I'm way behind the curve. I soloed my C-172 a few weeks ago (9-2-10) at 15 hours. I've got a long way to go before I get my license. Hopefully before next summer. Since I got the Skyhawk my model flying has been put on the back burner so that I can afford the new costs involved in owning a plane.

Wow, there is some impressive pilots in here.

I was lucky. I started RC when i was 10, full scale at 22. I have an ATP multi and commercial singe. I am thinking of getting my heli rating. I flew a lot of trainers, a west wind jet for a while, Commander 690 for a while, and a C-320 for a long time doing aerial photos. It was a blast. I have about 6000 hours, but my career got cut way short when a stupid mechanic left an instruction manual in my turbo filter. The turbo exploded about 100 feet high on take off. I spent a long time in the hosp in a coma an healing from multiple breaks, (about everything on the right side) an burns. The NTSB said noone should have lived but we did. That was lucky. I have been flying many MRI tubes an hospital beds since. Its been 5 years of hell so far. Hopefully they can get it fixed and get me back in the air. time will tell.

Thats why I work on my airplane myself. I own a Stearman and I know every square inch of it better than anyone else ever would. I get an IA to check behind me and sign off everything to be legal, but after 14 years I know more about it than most of them do. Glad you survived Flyboy......

Started flying RC in '79 at age 14. Took my first full scale lesson in 1980 in my uncle's Arrow. I currently hold an ATP (fixed wing SEL and MEL) with DHC-7, ATR42/72, J-3100 and 737 Type ratings. FEJ Rating as well. Passed 20k hours a few years ago and stopped counting. I currently fly 737's for a major US carrier........

Default RE: PILOT RATINGS AND ENDORSMENTS

I got a Cox PT 19 control line model for Christmas in the 6th grade (~1971). I did not realize how bad it flew until I built some of the Goldberg models, the Little Jumping Bean was an excellent kit and flyer. I started RC around 1976 with an Ace Wizard. Then I graduated to a Sweet Stick with a K&B 40, now I have ~70 models (mostly in boxes).

My full scale flying is 99% taxpayer funded. I got my Navigator wings in 1983 from the Air Force, went to EWO (Electronic Warfare Officer) school but then went to the F-4E as a WSO (backseater) vs the F-4G as a Wild Weasel EWO. At least it had a stick in the back and they would let you fly sometimes (I did five very unofficial landings) but that was not why you were taking up space that fuel could go in. I got my SEL private in a Cessna 152 (N68334-now destroyed I understand) in 1987 in 40 hrs plus a .5 check. I got rebuilt as a pilot and received my pilot wings in 1988. Flew the T-37 and T-38 (nice roll rate of 720/sec) in UPT and did good enough to get an F-16. At the end of UPT, you could pay $60 and take a test for your commercial. Flew the F-16 (A model at RTU, C model operational in the block 30, 32, 40, 42, 50, 52) for the next 10 years and got 1550 hours including some combat time in Desert Storm and Southern Watch. My sqdn CC has the first AMRAAM kill ever on a Mig 25 just after Christmas of 1992 while we were deployed. I flew one year with the BAAF (Bahraini Amiri Air Force) as an instructor on their F-16s. My last assignment before I retired was as a T-37 IP. I made 1700 hours in about 3.5 years which is a bunch of 1.2-1.5 hour sorties with a full brief and debrief of each flight.

After I got out, I got my ATP and got my ME endorsement since every thing I had flown had been either single engine or CL thrust restricted. I did 10 hours in a Seminole for my ATP/ME so I only have about 51 hours of piston time, everything else is turbine or turboprop. I had hoped to fly with Midway Airlines out of RDU but they folded in 2001. I was not interested in any other airline work since you have to commute to and from work. I have been flying corporate in a KingAir 200 for around six years now (20 minutes from the airport) but we only fly ~200 hours per year. There has been talk of getting a Citation XL or XLS but no airplane yet. I filled in as copilot on a Citation X and BeechJet 400 for about a year with another company on the side. That Citation is a sweet ride! So overall, I only have between 4-5000 hours since I was in the little airplane business while in the Air Force and no type ratings since the KingAir is < 12500 lbs.

Learned to fly R/C in 1968 with a Controlaire 5 in a Lanier Transit powered by an OS Max .35 R/C at 13 years old. Soloed a Cessna 150 in 1972, had all my ratings including ATP and FE by 1978. Type rated in the Airbus A320, DC-3, DC-8, B-737, 757, 767, E-170/190 and Fokker F-28. Airbus captain for a major airline, famous for landing in the Hudson River (it wasn't me!) Have 20,000 plus hours now. Have owned a Stinson 108, Cessna 170B and currently 1/2 owner of a 1957 172.

On the R/C side, I fly electrics only except for my vintage models which include a Goldberg Shoestring and Skylark 56 twin. Currently building an electric L-188 Lockheed Electra from my own plans. Active in R/C over forty years except from 1973 to 1977...amazing the changes I've seen in this hobby, especially the last ten years!

Just joined this site, I've been building model aircraft for around 55 years, and got the r.c. bug in the mid '70's. Left the hobby and learnt to fly full size in 1979 in the Aerospatial 'Rallye' aircraft. Became part owner of Dunkeswell airport in Devon U.K. (ex W.W.II U.S. Navy base flying P.B.4.Y.1's P.B.Y 5.a's) the airfield where I learnt to fly. Went on to fly C. 170, 172, 182,185, and B.N. Islander, the last three for the resident military skydiving club, and several other types. Back to model aircraft now after retirement through ill health.
I'm trying to finish a 72" span Cessna 172 with the upright fin from a set of very old plans.

Russ, I see you are part owner of an early 172, if this is the same as I'm nailing together now, would you have any photo' of it ? interior would be nice too.

Hello! I started flying control line with Cox plastic airplanes like the Army green mustang, Stuka and the PT-19 and the "Grasshopper". Also flew the

Testors.

"King Cobra" and the Gilbert .11 powered airplane. The Gilbert had nice rubber wheels and flew great! Most of the other plastic kits were underpowered

but did fly ok for beginners, even though we had to learn how to hand launch them! Moved on to R/C with a Sterling Mambo using a used OS "Pet" .09

engine with single channel rudder control. Added elevator control and throttle on a new OS .19, and after crashing that a few times Purchased a Dubro

Aero Commander and flew that on 3 channels. That was about 1969 or 1970. In '71 got my private pilots ticket and went on to begin flying for a living

by 1977. Now flying for a major US carrier. Still flying R/C from time to time with a new built Mambo and an electric Goldberg "Electra" among others.
