Does anyone have experience with this plane ? I'm putting one together with a GMS 120. What do you have in it for power and how does it fly ??

The Fly RC magazine had a pic of this plane in it where they said a review of it will be posted on RCU in January but I can't find it anywhere. This pic reminded me that I have this plane somewhere in the basement. Bought it on impulse one day because it seemed like a good deal. Had a quick look around my workshop for hardware for this project. The plane has been sitting here for several months taking backseat to other projects but now the epoxy is coming out for it. Calls for a .91 to 1.08. I don't have a 1.08 but do have a GMS 120 with pitts muffler. I live at 3000' and here engines are approx 20 % down on their sea level power so the GMS 120 will fit the bill here. The real wingspan is 69 inches and not 72 as it is advertised - it will fit into my truck fully assembled. I will use a mix of on hand Hitec servos (425, 475, 605 ) - no fancy digital stuff. The plane was quite cheap so I'm going to turn it into a budget bird - the best way to get a high bang for buck ratio. Battery pack - 6 Volt 2200 mAh NiMH to squeeze more oomph from those servos. Reciever and switch from a Hitec universal flightpack. Have a JR 662 radio with room for one more plane. Will work out what the total outlay was for this plane and post it next time with some pics before I start. Comments from other GSP Edge 540 72" owners will be most welcome.

All up RTF cost (plane, engine and pitts muffler, all radio gear) approx $ 430.00. A Budget bird indeed -> there is a lot of airplane there for the money.

hi.

just looked at the pics of the edge that are posted here.
i have one the same with the stars and stripes on it but, it is not a gsp. mine is a cm pro kit.
i have fitted mine with a 180 saito,605 hitec servos, two on the elevator and a pull pull on the rudder.
i had trouble with it being nose heavy, so where the hatch is in the tail for the rudder servo i placed two 1100mah battery packs.
all up it a great plane to fly. will hold a knife edge with little rudder.
the only thing i don't like is the stars seem to come off easy. i have had to glue somr of them back on.
as far as cost goes in australia we pay more hare so this was pretty expensive for me to set up.
all up i think it ended up costing me about $1800, but i don't care it is a great flying plane.

Must have a lot of power with that Saito 180 ! Can you hover it ? What was the all up weight ? GSP and CM Pro is one and the same - made in same factory in China. Mine is actually CM Pro as well, bought from Jet Hobbies in Canada. This plane is available in 2 color variations. I chose this one because the top and bottom wing designs are different.

i have tried to hover it afew time but i'm not game to try it too close to the ground, so it is a bit hard to see what the plane is doing so high.
it will hang there but i might need to re-prop it for better power.i'm running a 16" x 8" apc.
the weight came in at just over 10 pounds.
i did change the engine mount to a metal one. didn't like the one supplied for such a big motor.

The runway on the lake is better than pavement. Perfectly smooth. It is 690 feet long and 36 feet wide. We use a quad with a snowplough to groom it and can make it any size we like. When it has a thin layer of fresh show on it, it works best. The snow does not slow you down on take-off but acts like a brake on landing. We fly of it with both wheels and skis.

let me know how the 120 goes.
it should be more than enough power though.
i printed the pic of your field to show the guys when i go out today.
just remembered,i put some more glue on the wood where the wing bolts go in.
i tipped mine over one day and it pulled the wing mount almost out. just a thought no biggy though.
don't be afraid to slow the edge down on landing it will glide in fairly slow without stalling.
i found the foam tailwheel goes flat when it is sitting, so i replaced it with a rubber one.

This frozen lake is about 5 min from my home just next to town. Our summer site is about 20 min outside town. I live in a rural area. We only have approx 15 flyers in town, usually between 3 and 5 guys out at the field at a time. No crowding, lots of flying time. The valley has MANY lakes and rivers and in summer float flying is a favourite activity.

we only have th one field.same size club as yours.only takes me five minutes to get there. most of the time we get 6 to 8 guys flying.
there is plenty of space and the trees are'nt too close.
makes it easy when you live in the country.i have been to aother feilds and they don't have much space at all.
we share our field with a gun club but they only shoot one sunday per month.
it is good to be one of the more exsperienced flyer here. i get to do a far bit of the test flying so i'm getting to fly a lot of different planes.

I had this plane with a YS120 in it.
The plane handles well. It can't take abuse.
I sold it after one flight and the new owner crashed it.

Same here. The down side is that before the maiden flight I usually have to look over the new plane with a critical eye, make several adjustments, tune the motor etc and that can take quit a bit of time. There is also the odd newbie on the trainer cord that takes up some flying time. It is all part of the fun though. There is an old WW11 airstrip about 30 min away with a reasonably good landing surface, but we rarely bother to go that far.

I will do a report on this plane as I put it together and fly it-> will call the thread CMPro/GSP Edge 540 120 construction. There does not seem to be a lot of info on it out there.

Hi guys, I also have a Cm-Pro Edge which I first flew yesterday, it has a magnum 120 4 stroke, which I know doesnt have enough power for 3d stuff but will upgrade, I have a question for you guys.... where did you set you CG I seem to be having alot of high speed stall issues with very little elevator throw, it will knife edge no probs but not enough elevator to snap roll!!!! it has got me baffled, any advise would be very cool

Interesting problem ! I had an Extra 300 with the same issues once. Assuming the wing incidence is correct - (should be - it is an ARF - but check it if you can - it should be zero) - try the following: first trim it for upright flight, then fly it inverted at the same power -> if you need a lot of down elevator to keep a straight line while inverted then the CG should be moved back a bit. Add some tailweight and repeat the process. It sounds as if your CG is too for forward - this will make it hard to do a snaproll. Good luck.

I have the CG set at 110 mm which is the furthest point back, I started with 35 mm elevator throw on low rates now it started to snap with little input, but ver stable in level flight and knife edged beautiful but as I said not enough throw to snap roll which I think is really weird!! ;-) I'm going to try moving CG forward to 100 and increase throws again to see what happens oh yeah it will fly inverted hands off so I would have thought it was set pretty good

Yes, I think your CG is too far aft.
Move it forward. 110mm is around 4 inches right???
