Default RE: RCGF Engines

I have just completed my Great planes extra 300 (patty wagstaff) and I fitted the RCGF 50cc single and with the ignition up front and the gear in the standard postions it balanced within its range and has plenty of power.

I have only run about 2 1/2 gallons through mine but the engine runs sweet with great transtion and the power is getting better all the time, even with my heavly restricted silencer

I think my weight was nearer 16lbs though but thats assumes we are talking about the same model.

Also I use a 5 cell NIMH that as everyone quite correctly states gives close to 7 volts so I run a cheap £6 3 amp Regulator which drops the voltage down to 5.1volts and the benifit IMHO is that the voltage remains stable for alot longer as the battery drains but each to their own.
The only common sence approach is dont let it go over 6 volts regardsless of how you do it.

Regards

Major

82ndsteve The 45 is much smoother on vibration than the 43. I have both and unless you are needing a lighter engine i would reccomend the 45.

You're right ! If it runs between 4.8 - 6 volts it really doesn't need anymore !

I do like the A123 batteries though, but I'm not going to buy regulators and all new batteries unless I needed to.

isn't the 6v battery a 5 cell? So should I be using the 4.8 instead. I don't want to be one of those complaining.
No it isn't.
The "nominal" voltage of a NiMh cell under load may be 1.2V and therefore 5 cells show 6 volts however we like to plug in freshly charged batteries when we go to the flying field.
If you have one of those intelligent chargers that show you the battery status while you are charging, you will see that typical "fully charged voltage" of a cell is 1.45V, giving you 5.8V out of a 4v pack.
This means your 5 cell pack woudl give you 7.25 volts.
Admittedly, the voltage drops reasonably quickly do the nominal voltage (1.2V) under load but when you use a 5 cell pack, you are still connecting potentially over 7 volts to a unit that has 4.8v - 6.0v printed on it in big bold letters.

Given that a standard old fashioned 800mA RX pack gives you solid running for at least 2 hours (possibly 3), I don't see why we don't simply use a good quality 1100mA or even 1800mA 4 cell RX pack and forget about the gizmos.
The distributors have been stating that most ignition failures they have seen come from excessive voltage applied to the units. This plus what is clearly printed on the box should suffice to convince us

But then ...... no gizmos ..... no brag factor ... [:@]

Well I have some 2500 mAh RX batteries, so I am going to change it today. Now see what you made me do. I can't brag anymore. I have a daughter that is going to a meeting in Early Oct to your great country. She said, "Dad, you want to go". Told her I would be packed in a hour. What would the weather normally be like that time of the year? I'm lucky, I have been many places but never Australia. [8D]

Mate, you will hit the harshest of winter ! Yesterday, we had a sunny day, clear skies and around 24 degrees centigrade! [&o][&o]
Seriously - If you do come down here, make sure you make contact. I'm on the East Coast - town called Coffs Harbour. We are around 45 min flight north of Sydney.
By the way, we are running an annual Scale event here in Coffs Harbour next weekend. Would make a great opportunity for you to visit.
Sorry guys if I'm out of topic

Hey goirish

If you do come down - you have Ari already offering on the East coast - the east coast is ok if you like lots of people but over here on the West - is the best part.

Seriously - you have a place to stay, visit, fly or any of the above if you ever make it to the West coast of Oz mate.

We are also in the middle of winter here at the moment - had nearly an inch of rain this last week - darned weather.

Hey All I just purchased one of the new 28cc engines from Henry at R/C Aero! I am looking forward to putting it in a 84" WS Giant Fantasy that per my estimates should weigh in at 13.25 lbs with this engine. It should be a good test plane for that engine.

I know its a bit heavy for a 28cc engine but if it flies well for sport aerobatics I will be very happy as I don't
do or expect that I would want to any 3D stuff. This is a sport pattern type plane anyway.

When I spoke to Henry last week I guess AussieSteve was running one up at that time and Henry said he
was reporting 8400 RPM's on a 18/6 Zoar prop and 8000 RPM"S on an 18/8 Zoar.

It's a very nice looking engine that weighs pretty much the same as their 20 and 26cc. There is a picture of it on the Aerovate web site.

Will do. It is a rear carb with a slant spark plug configuration.

It is a rear carb but is only "5 1/4" from the rear of the carb to the back of the prop hub Henry tells me! I needed approx."6 1/16" on my plane so I should be able to mount this engine with spacers without cutting a hole in the firewall!

Don't think weight and balance will be a problem as I just took a 74 oz. engine off the nose along with 8 oz. of lead in the tail and replaced it with a 39 oz. engine in the nose which is about what the plans call for with a saito 150 for power with motor mount.

I'm excited to see Henry and AussieSteve moving in this direction with their gas engines in this weight range. Thanks Henry & AussieSteve I appreciate it as I feel many others do as well!

I suppose we would have to ask AssuieSteve about that. I have heard this engine is not an RCGF its one of
the new engines that will be produced in Australia soon and then in the US for US customers as well along with all of their engines in the very near future if I understood Henry correctly.

Hey All

The "i" s are being dotted and the "t"'s are being crossed. There will be some neat announcements soon enough in regards to the Aerovate engines and what the story is.

It is good news for our hobby/sport and great news for the Aerovate engine line across the board. It is also great news for current owners of the Aerovate engines and those who are considering us for their hangars.

But here is what we can state.
The Aerovate 28cc will be on its own blog shortly. It is not being manufactured by our OEM partner rcgf. They are being made in our facility. And this is only the start.

The Aerovate 28cc engine is being run by aussiesteve as we speak. He is extremely pleased with the performance of the engine. As you know he is not one to overstate any spec.

I hope that quells (a little bit anyway) the speculations that are running out there.
