broken tap in prop shaft,"what to do" ??
I have a fox 3.2, my nephew was trying to thread the hole in the prop shaft for a spinner, he broke the tap in the prop shaft. I need some ideas on how to get this broken tap out of the shaft. Any help will be much appreciated

You should be able to take the motor apart and take the crankshaft to a good machine shop. They should be able to bore a hole in the tap with an EDM (electro discharge machining) and then unscrew it.

You can also see your Snap-on dealer about purchasing a broken tap extraction set.
Of course, you could buy a new engine for what it cost, but if you ever break off
another tap, you'd be all set. Ingenius tool really... with four fingers that
fit into the shaving grooves of the tap, then a collet to tighten it down, then
you simply unscrew the whole assembly, as you normally would an unbroken tap.
If you're the handy type, you might even be able to make one well enough for a single use.
Not sure what size shaft you have, but if it's substantial enough not to warp,
I've shattered broken taps before, with a suitable hammer/punch, and picked out the remains.
Downside is that you stand a chance of ruining the threads even worse,
and worst case, in a thin shaft, you could warp the crankshaft itself.

Thanks C_Watkins, Also would anyone know where I would have to go to find someone with a vibralux machine?? I heard they can burn out the harder metal without harming the soft metal.

Ow!!! I would think the prop shaft was hardened during production. But then again, I guess you were able to drill it before trying to tap it. I too would probably try to shatter it and pick out the pieces depending on the size and depth. If it was a 3-flute tap, those are pretty easy to break up, 2-flutes are a bit tougher.

You might be able to get it out the way (JJ) said. Tell you the truth I would scratch that idea and get one of the prop nuts that Tru-turn sells that are tapped on the end for a spinner. Just my thought. (Walton CNC Machinist).

Make sure you support the thing as well as you can, before banging on it.
(removal from engine would likely be best)
I'd probably remove it from the engine, and make up a jig for the vise to hold it,
but use your best judgement... you just don't want to slam it through the
back of the crankcase in the process, bend/break the rod, or anything like that.
Use a good quality, proper-sized punch, suitable hammer, and quick, sharp blows.
Good luck with it!

DONT FORGET THE IGNITION PICKUP IS IN THE PROP HUB. DONT MOVE OR DAMAGE IT EITHER. FOX MAKES THEIR OWN CRANK AND CRANKCASE. THE PISTON AND CYLINDER ARE MAKITA/DOLMAR ORIGINALS. THE PROP SHAFT THREADS ARE 3/8X24 ON ALL FOX ENGINES. YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONTACT CHARLES AT FOX. SEE WHAT HIS RECOMMENDATIONS ARE.

Broken tap
Gil:
I'd simply ignore the broken tap and use a prop adapter nut from Tru-Turn. The prop shaft on Fox Gas engines is already threaded for 3/8 by 24 (I think). It was made for this set up, not to have the crankshaft drilled and tapped. Just my 2 cents.

Cajuncharley

Thanks stukabarry & charlie, I think that is what i will do. I don't want to take a chance @ damaging the engine & it runs great, It will turn a 22x10 mejzlik 400 rpm faster than my g-62, it should be awesome in a hanger 9 edge. By the way Charlie, I( had a great time with you & Herb last days off, I hope to have the edge ready to fly some time after I get in next days off. I would like to get together with ya'll for the maiden. I flew that little extra for it's maiden @ our field that same day I flew with ya'll, it flies great.
