Well for $220 you should look into a 1/18 scale since parts and upgrades are usually cheaper.

I would get one of these:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LL3436**&P=1

and:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXLYA5&P=7

and use the $20 off your $200 order and you will end up with a total around $190...you could get him a better esc or charger

I think its like ST verion is like 21mph or something. Keep in mind that since it is smaller it will seem faster then a 1/10 scale going the same speed or faster.

The buggy will accelerate and have a little more top speed b/c it is lighter, however the ST is the newer model.

Here are some other good mini's from team associated:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LL3412&P=1

high quality mini's from team xray:

team losi mini monster truck with two motors...will have lots of torque, but is more maintanence and shorter run times:

I can't remember off the top of my head, but if you have a local boarders book store go there for a minute. I was there and found a special issue of rccaraction titled rc minis. It reviewed all of the minis and listed there pros/cons and top speed. Also gave professional rc drivers opinions. The regular rccaraction mag also had a mini holiday buying guide

btw, you can get the xrays in rtr with the power pack combo or in kit version
