Default The 50% BD5-J Microjet in Texas

Hello BD lovers.

Here is a brief history of this jet model. I had the privelege of knowing a gentleman genius named Tom Sewell. Tom had a PASSION for the BD5-J. He modeled this is several sizes going from a small Turbax version, a larger Dynamax/.91 powered versiopn, to the largest 40% turbine version. I had the great time of flying and owning most of these, as alot of us did who hung around the Austin gang. Before his passing a couple of years ago, Tom was pursueing his dream BD, the 50%. At half scale, the inlets were able to be scale in size and location, as well as the outline. It features a flying stab, proven on the smaller versions, a proven airfiol, aux air inlets where their supposed to be, and scale gear like on the 40% with the many Thanks!! to the genius of Mike Kulzyk, and others in the group. The torch has been passed, the bar is set high, and I'm on a mission to take this jet to production. The fuse plug is ready to mold, and I'm looking for some interested parties. We are doing it RIGHT,& SCALE, the way Tom would have wanted it. Clear canopy also in the works. Contact me directly via phone for more info. 956-825-9798 leave me a message and number....no shop phone with time sensitive materials..yop know the drill.
I will post pics as we progress.

Specs are Fuse-6'4" Wing-8'6" Tip to tip Recommend power will be 20lbs +
Thanks for looking,
Jack

Glad you got them Jack. I wondered where they would end up. He originally was doing the molds for JMP, then lost momentum and they floated around the austin gang for a bit. get it done and i am sure Tom is up there smiling on you now! He was really happy to get them back in 2005(ish) and was reworking the intakes to get them right..

Hi Pat,
Good to hear from you old friend. I have a local thermomolding company here locally that can do the massive clear canopy like Tom would have wanted. I have Bill K's 40% in paint now, with the scale gearn that Mike K from Austin did. Pure genius!! I've decided to mold the whole thing, glassed balsa foam cores are just Too "dingable"
My Jacknife laminate will be perfect for this bird. Should have parts in time for a showing at Austin rally.

Take care ,
Jack

I pertty sure I worked on a Tom Sewell BD-5 Mold for Tom Cook at JMP back in the 80's. That looks awfully familar.

Yeppers I knew it, Late 80.s. You know, I remember that ducted fans needed larger inlets usually than original Full Scale Jets had. But with turbines they can be scale . Might take a look at the size of the NACA style inlet on the side. Some of what I remember about that I think I worked on Glassing it. as well. That is one cute little girl in the picture.

Hello guys
Tom Sewell BD5-J is available

This is the smaller version of my half scale (Sewell) BD5-J This would be perfect for a Jet-cat P-100 or similar. Span is right at 80" Includes scale retracts and a 98oz molded fuel cell. Full flying stab and 3 functional NACA inlets besides the main inlets. VERY scale outline. Call 956-825-9798 . This jet can be delivered to Mississippi Afterburner at the end of this month. This scheme hasn't been "done to death" and was flown by Jerry Mercer in the 80's from the research I've found.

Hi guys only just found this thread, I have a long time passion for the bd5 and would love to build one left of centre as a bd5s with the longer sailplane wings. I'd probably be using somethIng like a HQ section. Have there been any updates on the availability of the model or am I better off sourcing a bill hemple bd5?
