The Tower 75 turns an 11-7 1/2 at just over 14K on 15% nitro.

Davis Diesel wants $56 for a strap-on pusher muffler + postage. I'll pass....

There are other, less expensive alternatives to achieve the same results. It's sad that some of these companies feel justified in charging whatever they think the hobby will endure.

I can buy an SK .50 workhorse for less money, (WITH a muffler).

My nickles worth

I found pusher Mufflers
cool
http://www.davisdieseldevelopment.co...ler/pusher.htm

Aslo I have a os 50 sx on my bobcat with a 11x7 pusher prop with the new pusher tuned pipe. I get 20500 rpm and about 162mph out of the combo.
lets see here 55.95 +9.95 S&H for the SM-D muffler,
I guess you have to pay to play with pushers.
but a strap on ? are these let over fron the 70's?

I find that hard to believe. Its impossible. 143.5mp/h max,not including drag and prop losses.
But I`m always open for some educating
That'd be at the bottom of a *big* full-power dive. Straight and level you'd be lucky to get much more than 110mph out of that combo. I also find it hard to believe that an OS50sx will spin an 11x7 prop at 20,500 RPM at all -- but then I'm an old cynic from way-back.

Me thinks there's a tachometer and a speed-gun out their which both need recalibrating :-)

See?

This is why I try to keep my postings as free of specifics as possible, LOL...

Actually, I do post a lot of photos, most of them utterly useless but I do like the camera :-). I hate getting involved in back and forths over claims, wild or otherwise. I fly for fun, build for pleasure and enjoy the commeraderie of fellow flyers that share my laid-back attitude(s). I accept those that have to have the fastest, the slowest, the highest or the lowest but these rarely are invited to share a cold one after a hot day of flying.

It's nice to share stuff like prop diameters and pitch on whatever engine and to find sources for things needed. This website seems to excel in this area. Heck, I've even sold stuff on the Buy & Sell portion of the site!

Please, if you ever see me on here claiming something outrageous or even controversial, let me know I'm outta line. While I don't have much income, build and fly modest models and will probably never own a Desert Aircraft anything, I do have my integrity and this I value above all else.

Another nickle into the pot...

Ha! I've already got one, just have to pop the innerds out of the DB ones I have and turn em around. Still, I think I'll just put the silicon deflector on my Tower 75.

I have flown my Bobcat with a new OS 55 and a cut down 10x8 pusher prop . On a straight and level flight checking airspeed with a radar gun I was getting 91mph and after a dive to straight and level flight I was up to 114 mph. These readings are fairly accurate as the owner of the radar gun checked it against his auto speedometer and his hand held gps. The OS 55 wasc tached at 14,500 on the ground and was slightly rich. The plane is very stable it takes a long time to bleed off airspeed

Thanks for the info on pusher mufflers!

thought for the day: A "DA 50" is never out of reach.....It's the (5) JR 8611's that will kill you.

In order to move the landing gear forward, you are going to have to modify the mounting blocks. After cutting out those same block for my retract installation, I can tell you that modifying/strengthening the stock blocks is a good idea - they are not attached to much and they are glued in with what appears to be carpenter's wood glue...

This is exactly why I'm electing to mount an aluminum gear directly to the rear fuselage and skip wing-mounted gear altogether.

Perhaps at a later date and with another, different airframe, I'll do the retract thing.

What's the point of moving landing gear forward? I had OS61 and kind of tail heavy if move landing gear forward it definitely sit on it's tail when land. That 5/32" gear wire look weak to me and think about upgrade to 3/16" wire, will this help to beefing it up?

Great review on the Bobcat 50.

I have a question.

My brother saw you and asked a few question at the January 1st fun fly (I grew up in Mesa, Az). You said you were having problems with back pressure causing the engine to run bad because of the air pressure coming up the pipe. It seemed that the exhaust deflector wasn't enough to stop the reverse air flow.

Was this the case and were you able to solve the problem?

Thanks,

Larry

My stock wire gear broke on the building table....[:@]

Instead of ripping into the wings, I just bent up an aluminum one with some stock I
had laying around....not fancy, but it works fine. I ended up moving it all the way forward
but still screwing it to the stock wood for the wire gear. I moved the gear forward to help
the plane rotate....I had used the incorrect balance point, and I had a ton of weight in the
nose. With the gear mounted in the stock position (too far back) it made the nose even
heavier, and the elevator could not lift the nose off the ground for flight. []

Dave,

My CG is at 10 1/8 about 28% MAC as I rcall from an early posting.
And I will be moving it aft this winter to 10.5" 30% ???
Some fly as far back as 11.0
So please loose the nose weight and proformance will greatly improve!

And I promise not to SLAM the High Kwality Parts in this ARF. [sm=lol.gif]

I reset my balance to 10.3" and it flys OK now. I put a big battery in the nose, then dropped
in about 15 .36 caliber lead balls, dipped in epoxy. Rather than cut the nose off and open a
can of worms, I added about 4 ounces of lead strips on the bottom of the booms in the back.

I hated to do that, and add the weight but...."oh well".

I flew it today with an 11-8 on the .63 YS, and it flys OK, but not very fast. It only tachs 10.3
richened 3-400 for flight....eyeballed at about 75-80 MPH....not too swift. []

Flyboy,
I dont understand why you would put a YS 63 in a nitro jet and then talk about performance or lack of it.
Beats me but I`m an AUSSIE

FBD,
I have a barely used YS 60 with pipe (high revving standard stroke version) that would probably make that thing go like mad. Let me know if you are interested in it and I will make you a heck of a deal on it.

Thanks for the kind words, the fun fly was a crazy day for me I had several planes of my own to fly and was buddy boxing my son as well. I talked to a couple of people briefly about the bobcat can't really remember what was said though.

The end of the story on the Tower .75 was that for my installation the exhaust deflector is mandatory for proper running. I was flying to bobcat the day before the fun fly and the deflector came off in flight [:-] the the "rich" condition returned immediately. I re-tightened everything on the muffler and put a new exhaust deflector on the night before the fun fly and she was back up to form.

So yes for my installation of the tower .75 the exhaust deflector works and is mandatory for peak RPM.

This is the other option I have considered to solve the exhaust problem but I'm not sure I want somthing sticking up right next to the engine. Any thoughts?
