Corsair color schemes other than blue?
A friend is priming and putting the panel lines on a Top Flight Corsair. His last one that was lost in a crash was your typical all blue version. He is looking for other possible color schemes. I have seen I think some British ones that had green and tan camo. Anyone out there have anything on possible schemes? He is building this ship sport scale so color detail is not critical. Just a general idea of whats out there besides all blue or blue on the upper surfaces and light blue or gray on the lower.
Thanks,
John B.

Here is a picture of my DA 150 powered Don Smith 1/4 scale Corsair. I was also looking for a different color scheme and settled on the red and white. This scheme is based loosely on the plane flown by the VP of Vought Aircraft. The actual plane had some white trim on the leading edge of the wing and some other areas.[8D]

On February 23, 1955 all aircraft designed for carrier operations where designated to be repainted in Light Gull Grey and Insignia White. At that time there where approximately a half dozen Corsairs assigned to AES12 USMC at Quantico. They where still being used in a training capacity and were painted in the new scheme. The full scale photo is of an AU 1 which was the Marine designation. The Navy refered to it as an F4U-6.
The model is a Top Flite GS kit, power is a DA50, weight 31 lbs., paint Behr Exterior Latex.

Royal Navy camo
Salvadoran "Soccer War" camo
French Naval (Blue, but with a touch of color!)
Naval Reserve (Again, blue but with some color)
The CAF Corsair in its' orginal "house" colors of white with red and blue trim. (Still looking for a color photo)
Substantially different than production models but the prototype corsair paint job might look good on the TF kit if scale is not too important.

A $10 investment in something like a Squadron/ Signal Corsair book would cover just about every scheme Corsairs ever had. He might also learn a little bit more about the history of the Corsair and pilots who flew them, if he were to invest in such a book.

OOPS: looks like prices went up. Still, there are many more options (as far as books go), and even a $30 investment is small compared to what your friend will have into this project (in time AND money). So why not have him do it right: do some real research, and come up with a scheme that not only pleases him, but he will know some history of his subject.

The original WWII scheme was 3 color. Dark blue viewed from top. Med. blue viewed from side. White bottoms. Stars and bars with red surround.
The kewl thing for the early ones was the white tape just forward of the canopy that sealed the panel gaps. Quite interesting scheme and details.

I have always liked this color scheme from the Soccer War. The plastic model represents the colors that I plan to use on my H9 Corsair to convert it to the El Salvadoran Air Force. The last photo is how it looks now.

Here are some pictures out the Kagero book 3026 Corsair vol.2, the vol.1 has only blue ones in there but both are worth to read - even when you don't own a F4U)

Interesting how the wing tips are squared off on the P54, anyone know why.

.........John Baligrodzki , the above statement is why it is important to do your own research on any subject you bring up on RCU.

You might notice some of the designs had stretched cowlings, the red Goodyear in particular since they were running Pratt & Whitney 4360 4 row radials.

I can tell you one place where the Artist got it wrong. Greg Boyington's "photo op" plane was NOT named lulubelle. Actually it was larabelle. I've seen period photographs of the plane and that's the correct name of the plane.
Sadly these photo's are not available any longs.
