Maybe I should have put "stop-gap" for" interim". The RLM did not want the -188 but the -88 was getting so badly chewed up by the newer fighters and the -288 was taking so long in development that...

Well I am afraid Top Gunn got it .It is the Ju-188. When the development of the -288 stalled, because of engine delivery problems, the RLM decided that a little improvement was better than none....
