Ok well I just got home and there was a package on my doorstep; thetoyz.com


GPM titanium cvd's YAAAY!

Oh, wait... don't get too excited...they are the right lengths, the shaft fits the bearings etc etc... but the knuckle end (ball with shaft sticking though it that goes in the diff outdrive) is WAAAAAAY too big to even come close to fitting in the outdrives.

They are not that light either; 17 grams a pair compared to 19 grams for the original dogbones.


SO, Do NOT GET THE GPM CVD's for TT01 (with intent of using them on DF03 RA) eventhough tamiya recommends their TT01 CVD's for it as THEY WON'T FIT. (certainly the tamiya's do)

That's 23$ + shipping well wasted... Well at least you won't make the same mistake...


Anybody want them for their TT01???

In this case, I don't believe it's GPM's fault, but my own; the part is labeled for an entirely different car than mine; I am sure it fits the car it's intended for.

My mistake was thinking that since Tamiya's TT01 CVD's are confirmed to fit the DF03RA right on their own website, that any aftermarket CVD intended to fit the TT01 would fit the DF03RA which bit me in the... wallet.



Would someone with a TT01 kindly measure the diameter of the ball end of their CVD or dog bone and/or the inside diameter of the diff outdrive tube so I can really confirm GPM is not to blame?

Well at least you'll have ground to complain if they don't fit (they will) as they black on white print in the manual that they do

It was the least I could do to post about it since I pointed towards them in this very thread (with disclaimer), I sincirely hope no-one will be tempted to try it without reading through to my test results; FAIL.

It can really go both ways, some good some bad you just never know. From the looks of these CVD's I think I'd be quite pleased with them if I drove a TT01..

Okay well since I don't have much money to invest in my rally car yet since I'm working on another scaler truck I just spent $20 on a Venom 15T Double coupled with my XL-5 ESC.

Motor temps after first run are 204 degrees F on the motor and 140 degrees F on the ESC.

Gearing is 75T/29T so that makes 7.902

Is this okay for a brushed motor? Any recommendations on a better spur/pinion combo?

nope... brushed motors are harder to fry.

I'd still gear it down a bit 140F is pretty warm for an ESC, close to the point where most of them power down and I'd like to see motor temps stay at 180F or lower.


Try gearind down a little and see if it helps; sometimes you gain acceleration and don't even loose top speed.

Could you explain how i possibly geared down by .74 FDR and didnt gain top speed or loose noticable accel??

Sometimes gearing taller "stalls" the motor; it's giving all the torque it's got and that's not enough to "unload" to it's most efficiency RPM; amps stay high because the motor is loaded all the way, in such a condition gearing down sometimes costs you no top speed, increases acceleration a little and results in lower amps.

That's observation on my part, not science!

i figured it was something like aero drag or thebattery not giving enough amps,,i only tested for a short time and short burst of distance, but in a long enough distance, it would eventually wind out??


anyway not important, i think imay have just found the optimum ratio for my car.

I can be confusing in that regard... when going from a 3:1 ratio to a 4:1 ratio I would be gearing down (as if shifting down a gear in your car or bicycle) By gearing up I would be going from a 3:1 to a 2:1 for example...

^ still a bit confusing to the norm...

gearing down,,bigger spur or smaller pinion
gearing up,, smaller spur,,or bigger pinion.


7.902 is pretty high..or geared down in this case.

I didn't mean fry in the sense of actually being unusable. Magnets begins to lose there power regardless of the motor type above 180 degrees F. So it will have lost some power already most likely.

So, after the maiden run of my beloved DF-03Ra, I have a few things on my to-do-list

1, loosen the slipper clutch a little, I think it might have been too tight, because,
2, replace the front right universal swing shaft, it's totally wasted. Will probably fit the original parts here again unless I have to buy new stuff for;
3, disassemble the rear diff, something is very wrong with it.

I will probably also disassemble the front diff too, just in case.

Anyway, this is one of the fun things about having a car like this and driving it in too rough terrain, I will learn a lot about how the car is built

Also, Aflipz, I think I will seriously consider buying a smaller motor, having the 5,5T on gravel, it's just way too much out of control

Well I seemed to have lost my Tamiya spur and pinion gears that came with the kit...I only have the ones currently on which is 75T spur and 29T pinion yielding FDR of 7.902.

I've been searching around and since I am running a 15T double motor everyone seems to be running 8.55 FDR or higher to be safe.

Where and what teeth spur/pinion can I get replacement Tamiya gears to get around 8.55?

There's a seller on ebay, gemstraveller, that sell some unique pre-painted bodies and decals. I've never bought anything from this seller. But, it's worth taking a look.

Hi guys and gals!

My first post. I'm looking to get back into the sport after a 20 year break. After a lot of research, I've decided that the df03ra is the way to go for me. Always loved the rally cars and especially the tamiya products. I'm definitely going for the Lancia Delta version, no doubt about that! So my question is if anyone knows if there is a Lancia 037 or Lancia Stratos body that would fit? If I remember correctly, I think Kyosho made a good looking Stratos body.

This thread has been so helpful to read. Thanks to my fellow Canadian, Aflipz, I know exactly what set up to run. However, before I purchase the Df-03ra, There's a tamiya 959 Paris-Dakar rally car in my closet with 20 year old dirt on it that needs to be restored!
