RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Yes t thanks, it hit very flat and spun around flat SO Iwas able to salvage everything undamaged
including the fuel tank. Ihad to discard the front most battery as it was dented
and Ididn't trust it. This version of the plane should fly even better than that one, Iestimate it will be several pounds lighter
so takeoff in less distance, slower landings and awsome climb with my Wren160!

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Imade a small cover plate for the opening
where the 2nd battery goes. Both power wires
exit here and will go back to the powerbox.
Duralite sells extensions for this or you can make your own
or just extend the leads yourself

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
For battery charging, you can either run the charge leads inside the plane
OR use external sockets mounted on the fuse sides for more convenience.
Ilike method 2 and Ido this:
1. For the Duralite EXB with the 4 pin charge connector, use a DuBro #207 charge jack modified
so the connector slides through it
2. For the A123, use an Ernst #124 charge recepical... see pics
To install either if these, dremel a hole for them and CA the DuBro one in and the Ernst one comes with 2 small screws
Iam using the DuBro ones here

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Great idea,
I did that on my Boomerang XL's , got tired of fishing for servo leads.
Looks like you will be done in no time. Can't wait to see how you stretch the fuse.

DuBro charge receptical install pics
this is the front one, the rear one will be similar
After a while.. you actually do get used to boring holes in your beautifully
finished airframe... LOL

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Turbine installed(this is a Kero start unit!) .. now onto main gear
Note:there are a lot of voids and bare spots visible
on the interior mating surfaces of most of the formers
I will have to do quite a lot of re-gluing in here before final assembly

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Ifound voids under thefuse covering
where the main retracts mount! I do not like to
mount main gears over air pockets SOImilled
the covering back by 0.1880" until I got down to dead flat
areas. Now Iwill bond in a phenolic shim to fill in all voids
and to return to gear to being even with the fuse surface
and this will make me happy...

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
On the Elan I found I had to shim the sides of the bearers to fit the retracts better, I used a sheet of carbon and took it full depth to the top skin, it never pulled out or showed any signes of distress.

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Iput some 1/8" phenolic embedded in BVM
Zpoxy.. now the area where the retracts go is dead flat
and very strong! A little white touch up paint here
will make it all invisible

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Continuing on to other weight reductions>>>
Iremoved the small metal skids embedded in the
rear bottom of the booms. These weighed 0.4 oz
and so will furthur help reduce the frontal balance weight
Iseales the holes left with a tiny amount of 5 min epoxy
I do NOTrecommend this for any plane to be flown off
of hard surfaces but Ionly fly from grass and Idon't mind
some small grass stains back here!

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
If you really want to trim some weight in the tail, why not join the elevator halves and use one servo, like the Hi-Tec HS 7955TG, you should save over 2 oz with the elimination of one servo and linkage.
At 333 oz/in (6 volt system) I don't think torque would be an issue.

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Iwas considering that but Ilike the redundancy of 2!
THANKS
Iam using 4,S9551 servos in the back in place of BLS 451's (2Xelev and 2Xrudder)
they will save 0.5 oz apiece for a total of 2 oz total!

This is how Iwire my servo leads to the booms and wing, using a 15 pin PCconnector set for the outlet to the boom
and a 9 pin one for the wings.

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
To wire the elevator servos, Iuse a modified Ernst charge receptacle# 124
to provide a jack to plug these into...then when the stab is bolted dwn, the plug
is held into the jack securely! since it is trapped in place by the bottom of the inside of the stab

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
OK using the advanced mathematics formula called "WAG" Ihave rejoined the fuse halves with a 3"
"insert" now it's onto the finishing work. This is VERYstrong using CF longerons and now the outer skin
will further contribute to strength as well..

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
YES Ido have a canopy blank that will fit this!.. This one is from a Comp-Arf
"lightning". In addition I have a "plug" to make my own but that is configured for
the original length...with just a little trimming, this one will fit perfect!

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
Yes Thanks, Itypically put my air valve (robart) and possibly the sensor switch
for the powerbox in this area. This IS a sports jet and not a scale one so
not sure about the added work of a door but you never know...So far only added 3.5 ozs!
the really neat thing about the boomer design is that when you remove the top cover
ALL is exposed.. more jets should be this way!!!

RE: Boomerang Torus CG modification
I like the one hatch too. I was hoping to maiden mine today but it's a little too windy for my taste.
Maybe next week.
Enjoying your build thread keep up the good work.
