hey, very "sport" scale, but neat ! How did he fly ? What you had in it, Ramtec + OS .91 ?

The plane never flew because it was mainly over weight. This was my first try at building a Ducted fan model and I learned a lot. The plane would not have flown with an O.S. 65 and a dynamac fan unit that I thought it should. More like a turbine. But like I said before, I made a lot of mistakes. Here is a list:

1. Use 1/4 inch balsa wood for the whole fuse structure.
2. Used regular epoxy to coat the interior of the plane from inlet
to exhaust. (That alone added much weight.)
3. Made the wings fixed instead of removeable. (Hard to store)
4. The landing gear needed to be more robust. It was too
flimsy. That was also because of the length. But it was at the
correct height for this scale.

Things that learned from this model:

1. How to vacuum form canopy.
2. Preplan the model out before you cut wood. Know where
everything will go before you start. (Fuel tanks, Servos,
Batteries, etc)
3. Keep a construction book so if you want to do it again, you
have a ready reference of what to do and what not to do.
4. Keep it light, keep it light, keep it light. Did I mention KEEP IT
LIGHT!?

I'm currently working on another Scratch DF called the AMX. It's the size of a JHH model and will use a turbax I and 7.5 motor. Many of the lessons learned from above was used to make this plane. As for the Jag, I gave it to a friend. He liked the concept and wanted it. Remember guys, we don't want to finance a crash, better to bow out and save the money for another project than trying to replace valuable equipment. Thank you all for the interest. Any question? Hi Tamecat,

Which drawings are you basing your AMX on? This is one of the hardest drawings to get....another one is the CASA C-101 AVIOJET.

I am enclosing a photo of the AMX I am refering to....is it similar to this one?

Hey Reuben,

That would be the bird. I like jets that are uncommon and fly great. This one (The AMX) was the most difficult to build for me to date. The mid wing construction through me off. Not to mention the defined humps of the inlets and fuse top. I built the fuse in two components: the fuse and the wing. To save time I used foam for the tail end of the plane with full swinging stabs. All that is left is to make a new canopy, (I don't like how the old one fits) and install radio gear and fuel system.

Thanks for your reply.....what drawings did you use ?
I managed to download a 3-view of this plane but lacked fuselage crossections.

Yes the wing is in the same trajectory as the intakes and can appreciate the problems such design poses. But anyway...once you did the Mig-21 this plane should be a piece of cake

Hey Reuben,

All I used was the three view drawings of the plane. I got the shape by eyeing seveal photo of the bird, (I haven't seen a model of this plane in the U.S.) measuring the different lines on the plans and using good old imagination.
The plane looks like it should except for the exhaust, which I left slightly square. (The aft end of the model is foam. Not to save weight but to expand my building expertise.) The wing was enlarged, because it's a sport scale model and I wanted something that will fly as a jet trainer.
There is no rudder on this plane, the stabs are fully functional and I also have ailerons but no flaps. Just a barebone blow it out your but jet trainer.

Ok...thanks for the info...there are two scale drawings I have been trying to get, since I collect scale drawings of planes too, and this AMX is one of them "hard-to-get" type. The other being
the CASA C-101 Aviojet.

Default Mig-21 Plans

G Bertella has Mig21 plans. He advertises in RCJI...in Italy...no web page or credit card. I bought some plans from him a few years ago for YF-23...it's underway, so no idea if it will even fly. Had to send Lira via snail mail. Plans are okay but needed modification for tractor fan use. Also all his plans provide for splitting the fuselage for transport. Make them that way or modify for one piece as I did. Best of luck. Woody.

That, to the best of my knowledge, is a variant of the Chinese F-8. Another variant is famous for being involved with the US Navy P-3 Orion mid-air last year near China.

It obviously is largly copied from the MiG 21.

Thanks for the info I-Nav. I don't understand too much German, but with the help of Gist and Altavista gather that the first flight ended prematurely due to a flame-out? The video of first launch from grass strip is impressive...

If GW doesn't have one on the market in the next few months, I'll be putting my name on the list there at bzmbau.

You still at Ramstein, Mike? Keep us posted if you ever get to see one in person or order one. Would be interested in getting in on a bulk order/shipment. Thanks and Aloha. Woody.

I ran the page through Altavista and got the same. My German specializes in ordering beer... We're having a jet meet this weekend and I hope they bring the Mig. It's quite a bit larger than the GW.

I hear that there is a Mig 21 being kitted in Argentina with a full scale landing gear , also another by Airworld in Germany.
Any comparison betwen these kits would be appreciated
