RE: Fliton Edge 540 Mini
Finally finished! and here's the setup
HS-55 all
Eflite 480 1020kv
APC 12x6
CC 25
TT 2100mah LiPo Pro Lite
Total Weight 26oz (1.6 lbs)
The only bench test I've done was that the CC ESC didn't shut down after 10 seconds at full throttle. I will have to borrow my friends Watt meter to find out the actual specs. But, let me tell ya, it wanted to just to rocket away from me. Hover is just a few clicks above mid stick, which I've found to be enough for me. The real test is in the air and that will probably be this weekend.

RE: Fliton Edge 540 Mini
powrplay,
I my guess is right, and the specs are accurate, your Park 480 is a very close match to the AXI 2808/24. The AXI pulls ~23 amps on a 10x3.8. That 12x6 is probably pulling well over 30 amps! You will definitly need to prop way down at 1020 Kv. My guess is you won't even be able to swing an 11 inch prop under 25 amps. You are also exceeding the power limits for SF props (over 250 watts), My guess is the best match for you is around APC 10x5E.

RE: Fliton Edge 540 Mini
Thanks Joe,
A pro? not hardly. Niether as a pilot nor a photographer. The shot is from my new Canon Powershot SD550. With 7.1 megapixels, it's resolution and clairity is awesome. I chose it because it does INCREDIBLE macro shots. You should see the origonal photo, it's really super clear... you can zoom in and almost read the stuff on that tiny elevator servo. I used a mini tripod, up at Rabbit. A little forced perspective with the mountains in the backgroud, thought it would look cool. It's my desktop wallpaper right now...
Now you want to see some good photos? Wait till I get a few gigs of shots at the flyin in Chula Vista on my 'ole ladies Nikon D70 with her new monster zoom lense. Cover photo on the way....

Tim, that sounds like a good setup. I'm looking forward to the shots that will take.
Help me get up to speed. Are either of the motors I have sitting around up to the task of powering this plane?
Himax HC2812-0650
Hacker B20 15L +4:1
I'm assuming the geared Hacker is a thing of the past.
Are my 1+ year old 1500 and 2100 Kokams junk, because of the new technology?
Thanks for the help,
SJ

Joe,
I looked up those motors... they are both only about 75% of the power you need to fly this bird. The lipo's are probably okay. Do you know the C rating on them?

Joe,
The 1500 is not enough, but the 2000 will be great.
You guys out flying this weekend? I'll bring out the Edge and let you have at it... see if you like it. Riverside?
EDIT: There are not any decent vids of this bird anywhere. A pilot like you, a cameraman like me... we have harmony .

TMan,
I apologize for the typo. I'm using an APC 12x6E prop. Until I get a watt meter, I can not provide any info with different prop sizes. I have various size E props which I'll bring to the field with me. Here is a link for info about the 480

Have anyone get a chance to video their flight with the Edge?

RE: Fliton Edge 540 Mini
Powrplay,
You'll notice the specs say 2s or 3S lipo, and 10x6 to 12x6 prop. If you get the hang of these kind of specs, they are telling you the 2S pack will take a 12x6, the 3S pack will run the 10x6 prop. The lower voltage of the 2S turns the prop 30% slower, so you can turn a much larger diameter... They also say 25 amp to 40 amp ESC. Same thing... 2S = 25 amp, 3S = 40 amp... implied and ballbark of course, but probably in that range. Running the 3S on a 12x6 is probably pulling well over 30 amps, like I said before. Won't be sure till you load test, but I'll take bets.

RE: Fliton Edge 540 Mini
Powrplay,
Just took a minute to ge the [link=http://www.e-fliterc.com/ProdInfo/Files/EFLPark4801020KvOutrunnerInstructions.pdf]E-Flite Park 480 Manual[/link]. It looks like you are only slightly over your 25 amp ESC capacity, but not as bad I was guessing. Here is the setup example they provide:
Motor: Park 480 Brushless Outrunner, 1020Kv
ESC: E-flite 40A Brushless ESC (EFLA312A)
Prop: APC 12 x 6E (APC12060E)
Battery: Thunder Power PRO LITE 2100mAh 3S (THP21003SPL)
Flying Weight w/Battery: 26 oz (1.6 lbs)
Amps 26.2 , Volts 10.4, Watts 272, Input Watts/Pound 167, RPM 7320
So, if the ESC doesn't cut off on you with a fresh battery, then you're good-to-go. Sorry, I was wrong... should have checked the specs more closely. Looks like that will be an AWESOME setup. A little heavy, but you should expect very good vertical performance. Just be sure to set the Phoenix 25 for soft cutoff...

RE: Fliton Edge 540 Mini
TMan,
Will do on the 'soft cutoff'.
I'm hoping the RC Gods will allow us to fly this weekend. I'm still working on getting a Watt Meter to post some specs. Thanks for even starting this post, bro! Did anyone put a makeshift exhaust port on their cowling yet. I planned on using a couple of black pen caps. Like to ones on the small permanent markers...

Here are some specs to ponder with:
Motor: E-Flite 480
Battery: TT 11.1 vdc 2100mah (15C / 31.2A continous) (20C / 42A Burst)
Watt Meter: Astro Meter
ESC: Castle Creation Phoenix 25
Prop: APC 12 x 6 Electric
Full Throttle Test1
Starting Vdc: 12.28
Vdc: 10.2
Amps: 29.56
Watts: 302
Secs: 20
Full Throttle Test2
Starting Vdc: 11.91 after about a minute at Idle
Vdc: 10.41
Amps: 29.04
Watts: 311
Secs: 10
Full Throttle Test3
Starting Vdc: 11.81 after about a minute at Idle
Vdc: 10.39
Amps: 30.27
Watts: 314
Secs: 15
NOTE: I felt the motor after the last test and it was just warm to the touch. Sorry, I can't give you the windings temperature. No laser beam Scotty.
With these readings I'm sure this Edge will rock the sky!

RE: Fliton Edge 540 Mini
Interesting, 20% more load than E-flite says, and closer to my estimate. You have a HOT setup there... keep an eye on that ESC, it could get way too hot at that current level. Well over the rating! Definitly ballistic verticle.
Keep your WOT runs down to 5 seconds or so, and make sure it's getting good airflow, you should be okay. There is a bank of small chips on one side, those are the mosfets that carry the motor current. If they start melting the shrinkwrap, you better downsize on prop a bit and get you draw down to 25 amps if you are throttle-happy.
Frankly, over 300 watts is way more than this little bird needs IMHO. I'll assume you came in around 22-23 oz's with your robust setup. It will fly very well at 250-275 watts, andl still have real good verticle. Might back off a little bit just to save the ESC, and then you can fly WOT as much as you like. APC 11x5.5E would probably be a good match.

Joe, you can fly my Edge any time, but... how we gonna get smoke in this little thing [8D]
You just PM me and let me know where you're flyin on a weekend, I'll try to get out. Lots of travel in the coming weeks, Vegas for a week, then China for a week, then Chicago, who knows what after that... busy boy.
Sure would be fun to see this bird in the hands of a REAL pilot [X(]. I think it's amazing, but nobody has put up vids of this little beauty in the hands of a great hucker yet. Good Cirkus koo...

Go for it! I would love to see you get 15 oz's out of this one... Unless you take off covering to lighten, you are pretty limited...

RE: Fliton Edge 540 Mini
Yeah i was just teasing refering to the extra build. I have had my eye on that one since it came out. I think i'm probably going to get it sometime this spring. Winter has proven to be quite unfriendly with planes up here so i'm in no hurry.
I wonder how the power setup i used in my extra would do in this thing;
1320 pro lite 3 cell
park 400 920kv
4 dymond d47 servos
phoenix 25
8 gram rx
It's a gamble Depending on the weight of the airframe. If i'm lucky and get a 9.5oz airframe 17.5oz would not be an unrealistic auw and my setup would be perfect. If mine is like yours at over 20oz auw i might find myself wanting more power.

aflipz,
Hope you get a light one, everyone is reporting the basic kit is well over 12 oz's,, like mine. I was targeting mid-17 oz range too, not even close. But, this bird flies like a dream, even at just under 20 oz's.
