Okay, Billy's shown us the ultimate field box.

Does anyone have the ultimate field stand for an airplane, so we don't have to stoop over? Looking for something that holds the fuselage and maybe has a working surface.

Here's what I use... Nicest thing about it? You don't have to carry it back and forth to the field!

I found this one in a magazine (I can't remember which). I think they sell them for $120 but I'm going to try to build one myself.

The Crusader Toys business is for sale. You can probably still buy from them but I'd be careful. Also they sell the stand for $150. You can get it for $120 at Hobbies & Helis Int. Part # HHI7600

The same basic stand is sold by Sidewalk Flyers. The website is under construction but if you peck around they can be found. They charge $120 for the master kit. http://www.sidewalkflyers.com/

Being the frugal type, I made my own. It is not as pretty but works just as well. I used a "workmate" clone that can be found at your local "imported" tool vender. Simply clamp a table top plane stand to the top. It is also a good place to securely clamp a engine break in stand. On those rare occasions that I am not building or flying planes it even comes in handy for honeydo projects around the house. They can be had for about $25-30. I purchased a display model with a few scratches for $15.

C.P.,

Sorry no pics......hopefully Santa will bring a digital camera.

The clones are basically just 4 folding legs without the protruding lower brace that the original workmates had. I built a table top stand out of some spare 1/2" ply. A 24"x10" box with 2" high sides and 12" high ends. Cut a square "U" shaped yoke on the end pieces to cradle the plane and cover it with some 1/2" pipe insulation. If you want to get fancy make the cradle adjustable with some slots and thumb screws. If you don't care to build, any store purchased table top cradle will clamp to the top of the stand.

I make my own stands too, All hardwood and stronger than Crusaders. I have made a lot of them for our club members. It seems all the ones that are on sale nowadays are plywood or PVC. Greg

I have a crusader stand, The quality is second to none !!! Best piece of equipment i have ever purchased. It is worth the 150 dollars. The workmanship is outstanding. We have at least 4 at our field. I added a handle to The side to make it easier to carry. Two thumbs up !!!!!

Default Magazine Plan

Here's two ideas . . .

A few years ago, I forget which year/month, one of the two big magazines published plans on how to build a stand. Does anyone remember the issue year and month?

Second, at Lowe's this weekend I saw that Black and Decker now have a rollable/foldable workmates with wheels. If you were to put some PVC tubing in the holes you'd be set.

Again, if anyone knows the publisher, year, and month of the stand plans I'd appreciate it.

Tks

John,

I have sketch type drawings with all dimensions and hole placement, etc on them. Not real pretty but they would get you through the project. I could also take pictures of all the joints. parts.etc. Let me know if this would help. Greg

Greg...

A dimensioned sketch would fill the bill nicely. No need for photos. Is the sketch something you can send digitaly or is postal easier? Thanx so much for your help!

I have a feeling you may have opened the flood gates by offering info on your stand That is beautiful construction and a very well thought out design. If possible, I would like to be added to the list of folks wanting plans, and pictures if possible. If you can have them duplicated at a kinkos or somewhere like that I am sure that those of us that want plans will be happy to reimburse you for your time, and expenses. Thank you, and please let us know where to send the funds.

John & Lee,

The sketches that I have at present are very rough, this is the reason I suggested photos to go with them. These rough sketches work for me as I make 10 or so at a time and go a lot from memory. I will go ahead and redraw them to a scannable size and get them out to you via e-mail by the weekend. I have been planning to redraw them for quite a while, I guess the time has come. E-mail me with your e-mail addresses so I can get these out to you when I get done. Thanks

Default re: Field Stand Plans

Dwight,

I think you are right, I think that I've opened a can of worms here. Anyway, anyone interested in copies of the plans for this stand please e-mail me with your e-mail address and I will get a copy out to you as soon as I redraw them this weekend.

Also, I am working with another member of RCU to get some put up on a web site. We will post the details as soon as we get everything together.

Please use these for your own use only as I build and sell these in my area to offset the cost of this great hobby, and it took a lot of time and effort to perfect this design.

Thanks for your interest, Greg Finan
