how much power can the savage tranny handle!!
im thinking about putting the savage tranny in my custum truck. the engine has about 5 or more hp so i dont want to melt the gears and twist the **** out of it.[] i know the .46 conversion says it has 4.6 hp but dont know how it performs.
thanks for all the info you can provide.

the rear, and front boxes should hold up well with aluminum cups. The center may need a metal 2 speed, but idk it may hold up.

ill probably use 8th scale buggy diffs..aluminum ones. a high pitch metal gear spur. mettal tranny gears. and aluminum outdrive cups.
does the 3 speed have all metal gears and is the first gear lower than the stock first gear?

It looks like the 3 speed will have a combo of plastic and metal gears. But there is a truckzilla conv. from Hotbodies that uses a nearly 4.5hp .46 engine, and there was no need to hop up the tranny. There is a slipper clutch on the Spur gear to prevent to much power from hitting the tranny all at once.

and for pinion and spur combo what would be the best for the stock gear ratios and a 5.5hp moter for speed and power.

It depends on how heavy your truck will end up being. 5hp is a lot of power for a truck that going to weigh around 20lbs. So I'd gear it high, like 18/48. that should make it easier to control all of that power. You may also want to consider a Steel spur gear. From Robinson or Golden Horizion.[8D]

its going to be big likea 6th scale big foot. im guesing ti to weigh around 25 to 30 pounds with a full tank of gas(710cc). i was thinking around 18 or 20 pinion and stock tranny gears to start out. they usualy use a higher pitch spur gear to handle more abuse...and this trukc will be made to handle all of it.

yep its 2 cycle regular gas with some oil mixed in...
il be useing the associated monster gt main chassis and widen it up as much as i need. that will connect to the front and rear skidplates and bulkheads. then ill finish it off with some 2mm side plates for added strength.[&:] and im planning on making a custum roll cage.

thats just the start of it...
i am still figuring out the rpms of differnt engines and gear ratios. i find a dyno on one engine and the another on the same one and they are completly differnt. so im going to contact zenoah for the true specs.

hrmmmm....
Maybe go over and yell at the Genesis guys and see what they think about their trannys. THat is a heavy truck with around 5hp... The big difference ehre is that your low RPM 5 HP means that engine is making a buttload more torque than the nitro engines that these trannys were made for.

RE: how much power can the savage tranny handle!!
i kinda want some better shocks that will beable to hold up my truck and be able to take some hard jumps. What do you recomend for shocks that arnt so hefty of a price tag.
hmm. the .46 conversion has tons of torque and the stock tranny can handle it from what i hear. but id be gearing it preety high to make up for lack of rpms. ill have to check out the gennisis tranny i completly forgot about that.
what do you think about my wheel and tire combo?
i havnt completly deceded on all of the specs for this car so any feedback you can give would be a big help.

RE: how much power can the savage tranny handle!!
Hey,
I've scratch built a few large scale gas trucks. The savage tranny will last about 2 minutes before it breaks if you plan to use a zenoah engine. Comparing the HP ratings of gas and nitro is like comparing apples and oranges. The savage tranny was never designed to handle the torque/hp characteristics of a gasoline engine. You may want to scrap the savage tranny idea and look elese where for a tranny. The drive shaft/cvd's ,etc will not handle the loads of a 25-30 pound truck. Trust me....been there/ done that...save yourself a lot of trouble and don't bother using nitro drivetrain parts with a gas engine. I have tried going the other way too....a .46 will hardly move a FG monster truck with the stock FG gearing. This is not to say that nitro motor does not put out a lot of power, it does, but they have very little torque (even the .46) when compared to a gas motor. Goodluck with your project...it will be fun. Email me for some pics i have.

I dropped my 27 for the SH28, much stronger and easier to tune/keep tuned.... that isn't to say that the 27 is a bad engine, the SH28 is just amazing.
