sts .28 killed my spur
today i had a friend that races nitro professionally tune my STS .28
and he said it was done with breakin, and it was time to get down on it.
well after about 2 minutes of that all my teeth are gone off my spur.
he was impressed with my STS engine.
he'd never played with one before, but none the less he likes it.
my gear mesh was perfect and everything, i set it how i ran it on my stock .25 nitrostar
my stock engine never hurt a tooth on the spur.
am i going to have many problems with spurs with my STS engine.

Make sure your slipper is not too loose or it will melt the spur. Also, if you have not upgraded to aluminum clutch shoes, upgrade immediately. The stock shoes will cause the clutch bell to heat up and melt the spur.

RE: sts .28 killed my spur
my slipper was tight and the slipper pad still looks new
i just put new clutch shoes in with new engine but they were stock ones.
i just ordered aluminum ones.
my spur gear isn't melted it's chewed up.
and we checked it to make sure my mesh was right.
something went wrong. LOL.

What will happen with the stock shoes is the hot clutch bell will heat up the teeth on the spur as they come into contact with the clutch bell. When they get hot enough they get weak and it strips. Also check for a loose or cracked motor mount. If you have any movement in the motor or mount it will get the mesh out of alignment. I have a big problem with screws vibrating loose, even with blue loctite.

when you say racing, do you mean the vented clutchbells with bits cut out of em? i just replaced mine for a hardend steel one, but its not vented. you think this will cause problems of over heating? i have aluminium Hong Nor clutch shoes in there with the standard HPI springs on the shoes...

RE: sts .28 killed my spur
The STS is a way powerful mill and has enough torque to chew up spurs like the Cookie Monster eats cookies. Even with higher grade clutches, that engine can cause the clutch to slip and heat up, but higher grade clutches and/or clutch shoes do help alot.
Just take the tips that everyone else has already mentioned and adjust your idle so your wheels don't freewheel when you hold up your Savage during idle (this is a sign that your clutch is slipping during stops).

RE: sts .28 killed my spur
I agree completely with the idea that the engine didn't kill the spur, the clutch did... but like SavageJim was getting at, it might happen again in 2 more minutes or it might live for another couple of gallons. While these little engines don't have the power to strip the spur without help, the stronger ones like the STS will make it strip alot easier, and the least amount of bad meshing will kill it quick.
Just accept it as something that will occasionally happen if you keep running the plastic spur. I've killed two in one day, and I also have a 49T in my bag that has been mounted on the truck three different times and it still looks good.

Yes what I mean is vented. After melting a couple of spurs I got this and some Nova shoes and no more spur problems:

the vented part isn't what helps with aluminum shoes. it still needs to be hardened. you also weakened the CB, so if you ever run good shoes, it might explode on ya

RE: sts .28 killed my spur
i went to my LHS today and got a vented 16T CB and a 49T plastic spur
now i'm wating on my aluminum shoes and new fly wheel.
NOTE: we was looking at the vented CB's and the 15 T would not mesh right with the 49 T plastic spur.
it meshed but had a lot of binding.
i opened a 16T and it rolled smooth.
but the 15 T with the 49T steel spur was smooth.
kinda weird.

RE: sts .28 killed my spur
I'd go 18/47. 18/49 without the LCG setup and all that jazz on my X made the Mach 427 flip backwards at WOT. fun for a little bit, but it got old after a while. the 18/49 with the LCG chassis and softer suspension, it just squats and goes
the STS 28 is definitely gonna make more power than my mach, so i say go 18/47 or 19/47
