Default Gas fuel stopper question

Is there any easy way to determine if it is a gas fuel stopper or a glow fuel stopper.

Most of the gas stoppers are brown in color.. although I have come across one or 2 that are black.

There are some black gas stoppers, but an easy way to check before assembly is to immerse the stopper in a fuel-oil mix. If the stopper develops a "slimey" feel after 10 minutes or so it is not gas compatible. Better to purchase one that's specifically noted to be gasoline compatible. Doing so may save you an airplane where a non compatible stopper can degrade to grossly unacceptable levels on the first flight.

Having been severly burnt by using a black coloured stopper that was supposed to be gas compatible, I now use Du Bro brown coloured stoppers exclusively which enjoy an excellent reputation for being truly gas compatable.

Hi All

Thanks for all the good advice.

Let me give you an insight in my dilemma. I am building a H9 Twist 150 and want to fit a gas motor. The tank come with a nitro stopper and the manual say you have to replace with gas tubing and stopper. I have about 5 Du-Bro stoppers in my drawer, but guess what, they are a bit to small for the H9 tank. I do have a black stopper that is the same size that is supposed to be a gas stopper as it came with a 50 cc gas Chinese YAK, but I want to be sure before I use it.

I will take Pat Roy's advice to soak it in gas and see what happen.

If a Dubro stopper is black, it's not gas compatible. Sullivan has or had a black stopper alledged to be gas compatible but it in fact was most definately not. That particular stopper cost a bank full of money in lost aircraft before the problem was discovered.

Correct all my DuBro stopers are red(or brown). The black one came with an Chinise Yak 50cc gas plane but I don't trust it and want to be sure.

Replace tank and stopper with dubro and their brown stopper. Then you rest assured.

If the DuBro did fit I would not even have started this thread

Yes you are right. I can also get another plane with a gas tank but that was not my question.

Yes I know you can do that and possibly much more. We all were just trying to help and to guard against you making the same mistake that others have made.

Anyway for sure you now have enough information to make your very own decision.

The Dubro gas stopper is Red/Brown and has a raised 0 on its front face.

As Pat has said, don't use Sullivan stoppers thay are not petrol compatable, no matter what it says on the packaging.

I just found out from the agent that the H9 stopper is gas and glow compatible, I only have to replace the fuel line.

I would be very careful by sticking to what has been tried and tested, as Sullivan says the very same thing about their black stoppper.

I recently lost an airplane to this problem. I had a stopper, (it happened to be black), that I thought was "gas safe". Just to be sure, I soaked it in gasoline over night. It was fine the next day, so I used it. The first day's flying went fine. Then the airplane sat for about two weeks before I flew it again. Long story short, the stopper had disintegrated, and caused me to lose the airplane.

I always empty my tank at the end of a flying session, but enough had remained to "eat" the stopper.

Long story short, if you are not sure but you would like to use it, let the sucker soak for a week in gas and then see what it looks like....

To be the safest, and get the best tank around, get a Bennett built tank. No stopper! It is the best system I have seen and is worth every penny.

Thanks for this info. I have tested it for 10 min and it was ok but as you said that is not enough. I will take it out and soak it for a week and see.

Sullivan has just released a stopper constructed of viton (flouroelastomer), black in color as are o-rings constructed from viton, part number S449. Based on my work experince with gas turbines, I'm switching to the new Sullivan units, already bought 5, about $4.00 each. I did use the Dubro brown colored stoppers before.

I suffered from the black "gas" stopper from sullivan.. Lasted 10 flights. I didn't want to say anything because I figured maybe it was packaged wrong....

Stick with tried and true brown/red stoppers... they have been packaged right for years.

Personally I'd just run out and get a Dubro stopper but I'm not in Kuwait and don't know if they have a local hobby shop

After watching my fuselage fill up with fuel and just having numerous problems keeping the stoppers secure, Dubro or otherwise, I have eliminated the stoppers from my life. Go Bennett built.
