Default Erla 5

I've finally gotten the drawings to the point where I can start building. They aren't in a state to publish or anything, but it should be workable. The wings are going to built similarly to the School Girl bipe (solid sheet top and bottom, with ribs giving it shape). The only difference is the addition of shear webs, the School Girl has no shear webbing or spars whatsoever but since I'm planning to make major use of 1/32 sheet instead of 1/16 the shears should help a lot. The fuselage is also 1/32 sheet with a 1/8 square framework and a small amount of 1/16 doublers. It's going to be full-house, with a servo for each aileron and a bolt-on wing.

Most significantly, I've designed it around the Toki .05, since it's got such a short nose the extra weight should come in handy...at least it'll be doing SOMETHING.

I've attached a render of my design, and a pic of the actual full-size plane. Pardon my laziness in not rendering the cowl (they're a bugger to model). It's just a rounded off blob anyway.

Well, after a major setback (file corruption when the plans were nearly finished) the plans are getting very close to completion. Basically all I have to do is add some text, do the landing gear, and maybe a few other details.....and double-check things, of course.

The 'X' represents experimental, no doubt because of the airframe type and age.  Since the numbers are probably randomly assigned it's just a coinky-dinky (amusing though).

A genuine official SEXy 1/2A!

Nice work Digital!
You seem to find some very unique stuff to make models of.
I like this one a lot, I hope it flys well.

I'm really looking forward to this build.  I've designed it to make heavy use of 1/32" balsa (fuse sides, turtledeck, and wing skins).  I'm copycatting the wing structure of the School Girl, except that I'm using 1/32" balsa instead of 1/16" for the skin and I'm incorporating shear webs....still no spar though, with the possible exception of the leading edge balsa and the trailing edge that mates with the ailerons.

I have this personal opinion that airframes are overbuilt, even when using 1/16" balsa on a 1/2A glow plane.  I'll give this a whirl and see how it goes....hopefully it won't self-destruct.  If anyone is interested in the plans I'll be happy to share once the prototype has maidened successfully

This plane is registered in Switzerland, the lettering is just random just like when you get a licence plate for your car

Since my work situation doesn't allow me to build at this time, I've decided to release the plans to any of you who might wish to build it. I believe the plans are complete enough, and of course you can ask me anything you might wish to know.

Happily saved. Thanks for sharing DT!

Rich, somewhere in my files I've got a nice set of plans for that Zlin XII you're after. But I'm in the middle of getting ready to move house in a month. Hold that thought and remind me about this later on this summer once the dust settles.
