Default Good Plane for a Cox .09 ?

I just dug out my Tee Dee and Medallion .09 engines , can anyone suggest a good plane to build for either of these . Aileron control and hand launch .
Thanks , Rich

Iruna Pong Twowith a Med .09 and a 1.5oz tank.Flew it a bunch at SMALL this weekend. It doesn't have ailerons but that could be easily remedied if so desired. I would take out about half the dihedral if I did so. However, it will do rudder rolls to the left just as it is. I like to fly it around in a sporty manner making low passes, loops, rolls, etc. then take it up high before the fuel runs out and try to find thermals like a glider. Two kinds of flying with one plane. I just love the loud raspiness of a good running .09. Plans are available from Flying Models mag web site. Sorry about the the bum who snuck into the picture.

I reckon a Sure Shark .15 would be a good choice for a TD .09. I've been considering a SS for my almost NIB TD 09.</p>

Slap it on the sure shark, I fly mine on a Norvel 074 and I know it can take more weight. Or scratch build something. I am using a TD 09 in a Kress 709 fan unit that I am going to mount to a top of a 30" scratch hotliner.

I was also considering putting one on my Sureshark .15 kit for a while. I think it would really move out. Lately though, I've decided to build itwith a .15LA since I have a new one lying around and I would like a throttle/landing gear on this plane.

Good move, I built my Shark XV with a magnum 15XLS and no gear. It's another GREAT FLYING PLANE FROM DAVE!

I would not put a TD .09 on a 1/2A Sure Shark. There is a massive difference in power between an .049 and a TD .09 and the plane simply was not designed for it.

Please put the .09 on a larger, stronger airframe.

It's the sureshark XV that we're talking about, not the 1/2A one.
You warned me about a TD.09 on the small one when I bought the 1/2A kit </p>

How about something "classic" like the Kaos 40? At 70% the wingspan comes out at 38.5 inches, about the right size of a Medallion .09 project... and hot with a Tee Dee. It should be easily hand launchable since the Kaos is low midwing. Just can the trike gear. There's a Speed 400 plan available for free in a CAD importable format that might inspire you available [link=http://plans.rcmodell.hu/planelect.html]here[/link] .

I have a Medallion .09 as well, if you arent tied to building from plans then House of Balsa makes some "1/12" kits that will work with it. I have a couple of the HOB FW-190s and I think a Cox .09 is the engine illustrated on the plans. I realize that these kits are of an older design but they were designed to use the older and heavier electronics as well. With modern light weight stuff an .09 works fine.</p>

Back when $19.99 was a lot of money I sent away for a Hobby Shack 1/2A SST. What was delivered was a box full of doll house wood and a pretty heavy foam wing. I tried flying it with a .049 TD and ended up leaving it in a trash can at the field, disgusted with myself for getting gypped by the flashy advertising.
Little did I know a friend took it home, put a Cox .09 on it and turned it into a very fun little plane.

Well, if you got one of those laying around, you must have some other neat stuff.........gotta .10 size Pattern Bat? How bout a Baby Birdy?

If you really want a lot of fun, go to RCM and get plans for the Lil Toad. It is a great flyer with a worn out OS .10, should be even better with your TD and a 7x3 prop.

If you don't mind building from plans, here's a couple of ideas.  My EEL design was published in RCM, and plans are still available here:

http://www.rcmplans.com/index.php?ma...oducts_id=1934

My .09 Hornet was an enlargement of the 1/2A Hornet.  Sorry for the funky pic - it was from a long time ago!  The .09 Hornet plan is available from BTE:

http://www.btemodels.com/inworks/planinfo-hornet.html

There was a time when the Cox .09 was my favorite engine, and I sketched up several planes for it.  Not all were built, but hey, there's still time, right?  You can see more in my sketchbook:

Bruce, those are very sharp looking planes! I'll bet the EEL makes a striking sillouette as it streaks by.
I've entertained the idea of getting a .09 TD, but am not sure what I would be buying into for reliability and performance. In all the time you ran them, did they need as much behind the scenes attention as a TD .049 to really run?
Might sound like a dumb question, but is having a reset tool mandatory for the .09 or .15?

The 09 is a good running engine. The houseing doesn't crack like the 049TD. They only thing that I need to do was cram a piece of fuel tube over the needle assy. The glow/head seems to be very strong. I have about of quart of fuel thru mine in that fan unit.

I've never been too much of an engine tinkerer, so my favorites are the types that are the most reliable.  I don't remember doing too much to the .09s, don't even have a reset tool.  Typically ran the TD, no throttle.  Like iflyg450, I cram a short piece (3/8") of clear, stiff tubing on the carb housing.  Nip the exposed end of the tubing at an angle so it's easy to slide on the silicone tubing from the tank.
