Default sig lil rascal~

built one for my cousin many moons ago- I have a .049 norvell sitting around i was thinking of building another, but I would like ailerons. I am SURE someone has done this conversion. Can anyone link me to some pages or give some insight? last time I built one I inverted the motor so I could have a full "cowl" over the motor worked ok, but was kind of a PITA- dont know if I will do all that again lol.

Its good to see some of you "old" guys still on here-

I would entertain other airframe options that are of similar style. I like to throttle back and let it float around. I am looking to fly this thing in a park so might keep that in mind as well~ the lil rascal would land sloooow and was really easy to fly.

where is everyone?

The Rascal's eliptical wing make ailerons a challenge. The bigger 120 size has them I believe but there is more meat on the outboard part of the wing to work with.

A friend is building a new wing for his with ailerons because he was not satisfied with the roll response on three channels. The stock dihedral does not appear to be enough; you get skidding turns with rudder.

I don't know his aileron design, but I don't see the elliptical wing being an obstacle. To be effective, ailerons need to be near the ends of the wings, of course, so on an elliptical wing the typical solution is to angle the hinge line. You can see this on Spitfires, for example.

I would mount a servo on its side in the center of the wing and use thin Sullivan cable inside the wing to actuate the ailerons. You just bend the cable and its sheath so that it curves from parallel to the span, to 90 degrees to the aileron hinge line. Dubro makes a servo fitting that allows you to attach pushrods at both ends so the one servo moves each cable together, so they move the ailerons in opposite directions. The alternative is to fit a micro servo on each aileron, but the wing is very thin.

Oh no ... It's not impossible... Just not as simple and a lot more thought involved than as adding ailerons to a "Hershey Bar".

True enough, it's not the easiest conversion.

I built one (I did this whole thread yesterday but got knocked off the board) for a friend with the .061,,it is a boring plane but good for training,,he has a good sized pond so I took the .061 out and put in an OS.10, once I test fly that I plan to add floats so we can fly from his farm....ailerons,,I would just add them on, and not bother trying to make them part of the wing, or only put one on the left wing....Rog

I thought about doing this conversion with a .020 but decided against it.  An .049 Norvel would be the next lightest thing.  Doing a search a bunch of people have talked about doing it but it looks like you're the only one who has actually done one.  I have the bigger Nitro Rascal and it's a good flying plane with just rudder.  A little boring but okay.

Surely the .049 is way too big for the Lil Rascal (29-3/4inch span). The Nitro Rascal (49 inch) is .049 / .061 size.

I agree.   It is too big.   But he said lil' rascal.   Which Rascal are you talking about the LR, the 29 or 49 inch?

heck there was only 2 of them when I built it- the little rascal which was for the .049-.061 and the rascal which was I believe the .40 sized one.

so I am going to to with the Nitro Rascal~ and that is my final answer!

No theres a 110 size one too,,big boy, saw one get dumb thumbed in hard,,another was for a kid training...havent seen the .40 size but I'll take your word on it..I have the .061 lil rascal..Oh an invertedflyby,,the norvel .074 slogan was .."the power of a .10 in an .07 size engine..and a good running one is...basically because of the weight....Rog

Flew my nitro rascal today.  I bumped the control throws up and it's more fun than before but still can't coax much more than a loop and spin out of it.  It would be better with ailerons or more dihedral.     I think any engine from an .049 to a .10 would be fine with this plane.  Even with a powerful engine you're not gaining much in the aerobatics department, just a faster climb.

More on the Norvel in another thread.

I am working on the 49 in ws version. I roughly scaled the ailerons to match my 110 in ws Rascal. Esentially all I did was build the wing. Use a razor saw to remove the ailerons. Then add in balsa material to attach CA hinges. I also opted to put dual aileron servos in the wing bays ensuring I had some solid meat to attach control hors to the ailerons. I also reduced the dihedral using the TLAR meathod (That Looks About Right).

I think it will be a much more enjoyable plane with ailerons. Let us know how it goes.

Might be a while. It's been sitting like this for about a month now. Seems I always have five or six projects going on at once[&:] The idea is that I could take the lil feller out with the big'n to fly in's as I think they'll make an interesting pair. I wish Sig would kit the bigger ones or maybey offer a 60 size. These planes fly great and always impress.

The nitro rascal is a bit larger than I like to fly. The smaller they are , the more I can fly at home versus driving to a larger fiel , so I prefer them small or micro sized.
thats why I was asking abou the lil rascal , that is quite large enough for my tastes.

The Rascal C is laser cut and can be built as electric or Nitro, I am building the electric version now.

I haven't had any luck with my Lil Rascal C yet using the stock 400 sized brushed motor but I'm still trying. It seems like it makes very little thrust when run up full power. It's weight (ready to fly) is 24.45oz.

Is your "stock 400" the SIG geared combo?
