Ok, thanks allot guys, i knew the .46 FX would be enough but with all these opinions running around i had to make sure, some people say a .46 FX is not enough, Some people say its just enough, and some people say its more than enough, im with you guys i think the .46 FX is ganna be perfect for it, i justed finished my Funtana and cant wait to take that up, I got a saito .72 in that one, anyway thats again guys.......

P.S. whats a good Prop to put on the .46 for hovering?????

i just got an irvine wildcard, but its missing instructions can someone help. I think its fairly straight foreword, slot the servos in, and screw them down, landing gear uses brackets, tail wheel bolts on etc etc. but wheres CofG, control throws.
Looking foreward to flying it, trying to keep it light, and with a irvine 46 should perform well! I hope!

I'm no expert, but I've been in your situaltion before. I'd try to start with a CG around the spar. As for control throws, on a 3D plane you'll want as much throw as you can get without binding a servo. For low rates try half the full throw. Just get it up and see what feels good. Again, I'm no expert. I come from the "self taught", "try 'til it flies" school. And I've had pretty good success with it.

MAKE IT WORK, BUT DON'T BREAK IT.

Cheers, I come from the same background, but it is nice to know you've set it up somewhere in the right region and haven't got so much movement its uncontrollable. No computer set to help either! Its all made, might want to change the prop before I fly tho, a 12 by 8 might be a bit fast for it.
Full movement is well over 45 degrees on mine! might rate it down for the first flight. £50 for an ARTF isn't bad though!
See how goes!

Tristan`:

The manual for my Funstar says the recommended CG is 100 to 120 mm back from the leading edge of the wing. Thats approx 4 to 4.75 inches.

Good luck, and give us a flight report.

I'm Putting on my tail wheel right now on my Funstar, the 2 clamps PHOENIX has included with the tail wheel set up aren't so good.....they hardly even fit on the rudder...did anybody else out there have the same problem? did you use a different tail wheel set up than the stock set up? if so what did you do? do you have any pics of it so i could get some idea's. thanks

Squirt,
Throw those little plastic clamps away. Use !QUOT!tiny!QUOT! rubber bands like the girls use to do there braids. Much simpler and allows a !QUOT!spring type!QUOT! tail wheel to reduce lateral loads. Drill 2 ea 1/8!QUOT! holes in the rudder where you would have installed those clamps. Thin CA the holes thoroughly. When dry, thread the rubber bands thru the holes and wrap around tail wheel tiller. Go to page 3 of this thread I posted some pics there. Not close ups but you'll get the idea.

Thanks edh13. the only thing is, is that i don't know what you talking about. When you say to drill that hole in the rudder as if i was going to install the plastic tail wheel supporter {the ones that were supplied with the ARF} then wick some think CA in there, wait till it dries. then thread a small rubber ban threw it, i don't get what you mean. how are you suppose to thread a rubber band? i looked at those pictures you have on page 3, but i couldn't make out the tail wheel. from a distance it looks like you used the stock set up. anyway thanks for you help. If you have time i would really appreciate if you took a detailed picture of your tail wheel for me. i know thats allot to ask for but i wanna do this right. thanks Lucas

Squirt,

Do you see how the plastic retainer's are mounted on the default mount? They rap around the metal rod then screw into the wood houseing on the rudder. What edh13 is saying is that you do away with those but use the same mounting holes that your screws go through that hold the plastic retainer's in place. Next make the holes just big enough so that you can squeeze (hence thread) a rubber band through using the small hair bands. What you do then is thread the metal rod through the rubber bands.

If you look close enough in the pictures you can kind of tell how he has them mounted. Just focus on the mounting screw holes then you can see how he has the bands wrapped around the metal rod. What this does is allow the tail wheel and rudder to move around freely without causing to much bind on the servo.

Well this is a long time coming but here they are. Sorry for the long delay.

Here is how I strengthened to the main landing gear. What I used was a 2-56 (smaller?) rod and soldered it to each side of the axles, adding a slight degree bend in the middle. By using this method it saves those props.

Man Blackie you must have a ripped up stip where you fly, those tyres look like they need to find the bin..

Im going to pick mine up tomorrow..Are the holes for the motor mount already drilled as i want to mount mine at 90` not the 45 that every one is using?

Flying off of asphalt with these cheap tires is doing a number on them huh? I have a spare set ready once they find the bin.

Vortec, Yes the motor mount comes drilled and attached to the firewall at a 45 degree angle. This may not be your normal preference, but I've found that it works very well this way. The exhaust exits right in the center of the fuselage. This arrangement keeps the airplane pretty clean during flight. I didn't care for the supplied hardware for mounting the engine though, so I drilled the mount and bolted the engine directly to it.

Yeah im not a fan of the clamp style of mounting. Was asking because i was thinking of using a pitts muffler on mine. Probably wont now.

I think most are running the APC 12.25x3.75 on the 46 engines.

Funstar is amazingly fun!

Yesterday got an bad incident, I started to take off and just few seconds after I had got my wheels from ground, my Saito 65 shutted down. I was performing my 90 degrees angle take off Quickly pulled everything out of elevator and got down on the wheels but with too heavily. The fuselage snapped from the front of cabin and is really easily fixable, no other damage.

But the thing I'm worried about is that the fuselage is REALLY thin in the cracking point.. There's only two sheets of balsa that hold the whole nose.. Amazingly bad design.

Anyone else got cracks on this point?

Attached picture of my funny star, I have laminated carbon landing gears and painted the white thingies not to lost orientation since the bear-pilot is flying too mad sometimes!
