Some might remember the 4 bladed mustang I did for RC Aeroworks with Flite Metal and a DA 85. Since that project is on the expensive side we thought we might replicate the project but do it on a more affordable budget. Gene over at Troy Built sent us one of his 71 inch mustang kits andsome few cool parts to see what we come up with.

We will remove the factory covering on the wings to fliberglass. The Fuse is already composite so this will speed things along.

We are using the new DLE 35 rear exhaust (4.1 hp) and Kelvin over at Keleo Creations is providing us with some working manifolds for this fire breather.

We are going to try a few 4 bladed prop setups to see if we can find a reasonable combination for flight but plan on some two bladed speed traps. We have to find out how fast this new powerplant can push the Mustang.

We will be usingTroy Builts newelectric retract system. I will send pics when it arrives.

I spent the last two nights getting started. So far I have the wings covered with fiberglass and a good head start on some Flite metal. The fuse has a perfect suface for applying the Flite Metal without any prep work.

The Fuse already has panel lines and cowling screw holes but I added some rivet holes with my trusty little spine wheel.

The wings and tail surfaceshad some lightning holes I had to fill but it was very easy to fix.

I though the scoop might need a little extra touch so we cut some screen from a gutter guard. Looks pretty good I think.

Very nice, was thinking of this very combo.. What weight cloth did you use on the wing?
The FM looks good on the fuse, you didn't do anything as far as prep goes?

No prep other than a tack rag. The entire fuse is coated so you can't feel any of the decals. I covered right over them. I used 3/4 oz on the wing with a 2 oz in the middle for a little extra support.

The flite metal sticks real good to the existing surface. Better than the first one I fiberglassed. I was very surprised. The only thing showing behind the metal is the panel lines and cowling screw holes.

Cool Condor. I have this same plane with a DLE30 and Seirra down and locked converted gear. I have wanted to run a four blade prop for awhile and will be looking forward to the build. I have a DLE 35ra that is scheduled to go in an ESM FW-190. I could always swap the engines or maybe convince the wife that i need another 35. Wonder what that would cost me. And I have always wanted to do a scale exhaust so I really cant wait to hear yours with the sound. What size 4 Blade do you have in the picture?

Hey ya Skillet, Good to see you still bumping around out there. The prop pictured is the Biela 17.3 X 8 carbon fiber. This is going to be another hands on test project until we figure out what works. That was just my best guess going in. I can't find a factory prop chart for the new DLE 35 so I am using Troy Builts chart to get close.

I would love to hear more about your converted gear. That is one nice setup. What siera gear did you use for the conversion and (if you don't mind) how much for the completed gear. I was looking at a few Corsair setups on YouTube. That is the cat meow baby. Very nice equipment.

I have the engine installed now and the DLE 35 fit perfectly including the exhaust. I don't think the Keleo Creation exhaust will be ready for a while so we are going to maiden her with the stock pipes.

I have the right side completed in flite metal and as you can see this is going to be a red tail version.

I started working on the exhaust stacks. I applied some FM to the pipes and a little stain to get that nice copper color to give that heated look. Came out nice. I installed them with some hot glue so I can remove them when we get the Keleo Creations exhaust stacks.

Hey Condor. I actually have 3 sets of Sierra Retract gear that Down and Locked converted for me. I have a 74"ESM Corsair, 71" ESM Mustang, and a 71" ESM FW-190. The FW-190 has to be built and the Corsair and Mustang gear has to be installed when I get home. I am deployed to Kandahar AB at the moment and will be home in the coming weeks. I sent all the gear off to be converted before I left to be ready when I got home. The FW and 35RA I ordered in the last couple of weeks. What they cost per coversion I could not tell ya. I spent 1264 total and that includes the conversion of 3 sets of gear AND the FW-190 sierra gear. I had Down and Locked order the gear for me and convert it along with the rest. So that prise includes a set of gear and 3 conversions. I was tired of messing with air. I run a 18x8 xoar ww2 prop on the Mustang and I have a G-38 in the Corsair that has a 18x10ww2 xoar. I just love building and flying warbirds. I also ordered a retractable tailwheel for the Corsair that came in a week or so ago. The first pic is me with my shop. thats my mug on the far right with my hat in my pocket. And the second is the Corsair tailwheel. My wonderful wife took the picture and emailed me. Love that women.

Condor love the paint scheme. Mine is stock but I did not have time earlier this year to do anything different. I plan on changing some things in the next few months. When I get home I will post some pics of the gear and what Down and locked did. I look forward to seeing the numbers you get from that engine/prop combo. I would love to try the flight metal. How hard is it to put on? Any special tools needed?

FM is a walk in the park. It has an adhesive backing. You cut it to the size you want, peel off the backing, and rub it on with a small burnishing tool that comes with the FM kit. You overlap it about an 1/8 inch to make your panel lines. You also get a small metal wheel with litle teeth that you roll across the FM to make rivets. Bo, its the greatest stuff I have ever used. I use it for door handles, knobs, cockpit features, prop tips, and anything you can think of. If you gave me a banana I couldtrain a Rhesus monkey to use it in about 30 minutes.

I have been out of town on business and not working on the mustang but all that is changing this week. I received the decal sheet from Cal Grafix and it looks great. Tru Turn is sending the spinner for the project and we also have an 18 X 8 Zinger 4 blade on the way for additional testing.

We should receive the cockpit sometime this week as well. I did receive the Flite Metal and the rub on nomenclature for the build so I will be busy this week getting this monster in the air.

I will post more photos and updates as I complete more work this week.

Oh yeah, I did get the wing primered and ready for sanding. Should have the wing and fuse Flite Metaled by the end of the week.

Hey Fellas, I have been away for a while but I am back in the shop working on the mustang. I ordered a cockpit kit from Dynamic Balsa. You can find them at http://www.dbalsa.com/accessories/cockpits.htm

They make some very COOL kits for cockpit upgrades. Since we are spending so much time on this build I thought it deserved a real cockpit. I had to cut out the flight deck, remove the servo tray, and frame the inside of the body but it was worth it. The kit was around $100 and comes with everything you need and pretty good instructions as well. They even include a DVD with lots of quality pictures to help you.

The fuse is now complete and I will be starting on the wing this week. Wait until you see what I have for 50 cals. Its lookin real good.

I just finished covering and painting the fuse. I should have the Keleo Creations exhaust eary next week and the decals by tomorrow. I really like this kit. So far everything is going as planned.

The wing is ready for Flite metal and I should have it covered over the next few days. Can't wait to see her on her feet.

Did you get the gear yet? I was planning on getting this set up and I am not sure what gear I will use, Robart has the electric630 series out, but I'm not sure if it will fit.... Also, do you think you will have any cooling issues on the motor? One last question and it might be a stupid one...lol I like how you added the screen on the scoop, with it open like that, do you have any plans to do something with the air coming in, or you going to put something over the back to close it off?

The top of the jug is cut out on the bottom of the cowl and the forward air scoop is open. When I install the Keleo Creations exhaust there will also be lots of airspace around the exhaust pipes as well.</font></font></p>

How close to scale will the prop be?  What are the expectations of flight performance with a big 4 blader?
