Every iron is just a little bit different. So the setting on one iron may be different on another iron, even if they are the same brand. The best way to tell is to get a thermometer to use to tell what temp the iron is at, [link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXB352&P=7[/link]

hope this helps

And each brand of covering has it's own BEST temps to work at and it will vary in different areas even with different colors such as metallics, neons and opaques being different than solids. Boy, haven't we helped? Best to take a small piece and test on a scrap. Wouldn't hurt to make a note of what temp works good and leave it with remnants of the roll for next time you use it or even start a log book. Yep, we're having fun now.

Just set it on "2", let it heat up and try it.

If you need more heat, go to 2 and a half - then 3 - 3 and 1/2 etc
