RE: Zagi 400 X motor
Under $50 bucks will be a challenge but you might try http://www.hobby-lobby.com/speed480.htm a speed 480.
Also the battery pack will make a difference try and 8 cell 1400 mah nimh pack from http://www.unipros.com/cbpsite/maina...3&cmd=&promoid.
The thrust from a typical speed 400 is about 8 oz, a speed 480 is about 10 oz and the cobalt is about 18 oz
Or a cobalt 4014 from http://www.maxxprod.com/mpi/mpi-26a.html or http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/131480.asp
The cobalts will be a big improvement from the speed 400 but requires a better nimh battery.
Your friends plane should be faster but at a cost of $180

I would have to agree with woodduck-RCU. I belive your best bet is a MPI or a wattage 400 size cobalt with a 7X4 E-prop, the stock Zagi speedo can handle the current draw.
Good luck!
