I was stationed at Spangdahlem,W. Germany for 5 years, and listened to, watched, and even got in some sim time, thanks to a buddy in the sim shop. The F-4 isn't necessarily the ugliest, but definitly not the prettiest airplane I've ever seen. Big, fat, smokey, and stinky, slow to roll out, takes all of the runway to slow down. Glide ratio of a brick. But still cool. Really cool...The squadrons there were the 52nd, 23rd, and the 480th..If the rc versions are anything like the real thing, I can see why it's not modeled much. It would definitly be a handful, from rollout, to landing...

"The Spook"

The aircraft's emblem is a whimsical cartoon ghost called "The Spook", which was created by McDonnell Douglas technical artist, Anthony "Tony" Wong, for shoulder patches. The name "Spook" was coined by the crews of either the 12th Tactical Fighter Wing or the 4453rd Combat Crew Training Wing at MacDill AFB. The figure is ubiquitous, appearing on every imaginable item associated with the F-4. The Spook has followed the Phantom around the world adopting local fashions; for example, the British adaptation of the U.S. "Phantom Man"[SUP][120][/SUP] is a Spook that sometimes wears a bowler hat and smokes a pipe

[QUOTE=Ram-bro;11618806]The F22 in action..... I imagine the Iranian pilots got to stress load their "G" Suits during this encounter.....or maybe it should be "S" suit?

The F4 never had this type of opportunity to fly against a 55 year old design. If it had flown against a Wright Military Flyer, I'm certain it would have prevailed.

IF our F-22 could not sneak up on a 50+ year old jet, I would say we were getting very little bang for our bucks! But I will admit it, it IS fun to poke sticks at these Islamic kooks... but I also wonder IF we were that far ahead of them culturally, politically, religiously, and militarily, WHY are we goading them? Should we continue to borrow money from China so we can fly the most advanced aircraft all over the world to show everyone how much power we can muster? Just askin…

Why is it that US fighters ar not fitted with IRST system as standard kit? Especaily on a F22!! Yes F14 had them from day one. Super Hornet now has them as an option ....

F16 exported to UAE also had them but not USAF .....

Bean counters no doubt hard at work.

My soap box for the day and it does relate to warbirds too.
That's easy, for one those models are old and out of date and are being updated to another newer unit.
and secondly there is no real need for it at the moment.

We stopped borrowing money ($1.250 trillion) from china 3 years ago...and have been repaying china as of 2013 they own22% of our national debt...What people fail to know is that we give loans to China, Israel and other major countries and vise versa.

Maybe you folks should Google the F4 and see what that plane could really do 50 years ago . After all the model A was big in it's day also but you wouldn't compare it to today's cars. It's sometimes a shame younger folks can't REALLY see the big picture. Go check out the F4"s history and the records it set . I don't like jets and never liked working on them in the Navy but they aren't ugly just not my thing. ENJOY !!! RED

No kidding, used to watch them come over the hills from El Toro as a kid and like I said they were really fast (loud too) for such a big plane. I always thought they were sort of ugly but that's just me, I'm sure a lot of people think they are cool looking. I think the A6 was a cool looking plane and some of my friends think they were ugly.

I'm not sure the age of the plane is as important as the sophistication of the weapons and on board systems. I bet the electronics and missiles in those planes are not 50 years old.

with the thought of the age of the airframe vs the systems. I think the way the USA fights wars is to make it to expensive for anyone to keep up with us in the technology relm. Our equipment is supposedly more advanced than everyone elses, our training far superior etc. The way this is being countered is with quantity vs quality. We could probably get by with F15s and F16s but that just means your fighting on equal terms.....who wants to be in a fair fight?

The F-15 has never been defeated in air-to-air combat.. until the F-22 came along. In mock dog-fights, "Wolfpacks" of F-22s have gone head to head with squadrons of F-15s, defeating ALL OF THEM. Superior weaponry, radar, stealth, and tactics designed to support the F-22s strengths make it the finest fighter on planet Earth. I truly enjoy watching Russian aircraft like the latest Sukohi or Mig, doing amazing high alpha, vectored thrust maneuvers... knowing all the while that the F-22 could and world defeat them with a missile shot they never detected... Military hardware is one of the few areas in which our government actually gives us the most bang for our bucks.
