I got one -- and will be looking for something different. There is no way to disable the gyro, and it doesn't respond like a "real" plane. The problem starts at takeoff. You can't gently lift off, but eventually the elevator grabs and you're into a hover. Maybe cool, but makes it hard to fly well. Seems like over control is always required, and you have to constantly push the plan back where it belongs. I'll rate this one a zero.

I'm sorry to hear that, I'm having a ball with mine (I got two!)
are you sure you're flying it with the gyro in the default as3x mode? (I have accidentally taken off with the switch in hover assist mode and it does behave like you've described.)
I don't use any of the flight modes at all anymore, alternately you could remove the as3x brick and replace it with the standard (non as3x) brick.

I haven't changed any yet... but I DID do the "wire mod".... unfortunately there have been reports of the little motor's lifespan being short / spotty.
did your motor fail completely?

Yes apparently these motors might last 40 -50 flights if ur lucky--I really like this acft though and purchased another---old one dropped off to no power--can't even take off now---I will order another motor but not sure how easy it will be to change---what does wire mod do?

it should not be a difficult swap, (the motor)
the wire mod basically puts bigger wire from the battery to the motor and bypasses some much smaller gauge wire.
makes it so you can hover with less than 45C battery (and hover longer)
I DO apologies for the link, but it's where you can read the info from the horses mouth so to speak
