Default Castle phoenix 110HV experience?

Guys,

I am about to start building my new plane. I secured a carbon/kevlar Passport kit and it is too beautifull to ruin it with a slimer. I am fed up with the oil everywhere, the need to adjust needle valves, pumps, pipes, etc. Soooo.... long story short this one will be electric. I am very interested in a cost concious setup and I am planning for an outrunner motor (AXI F3A or Dualsky), a Castle Creations 110HV ESC to go with it. I remember seeing some posts about trouble with this combination (i.e. screeching noises at high throttle?)

Is there any new experience with the combo? Anybody running Castle ESC with outrunner motos? Is the ESC firmware upgradeable?

I would really appreciate your input here

Yes, you can upgrade the firmware. That is what solved the screech issues a while back. Also, the 110 is overkill and only adds extra weight. The 85HV is plenty and is actually way under rated and can easily handle over 85 amps if you wanted to go there. With the Axi or Dualsky, the 85 gets barely warm after a flight.

G'day Guys,

How are people mounting the HV-85 speed controls in their models? The reason I ask is there's no mounting lugs etc on the controller.

Cheers
Jason.

I had a cheap clone of the Jeti, with identical mounting lugs,so put in a couple of spruce strips with captive nutsbut my Dualsky ate the ESC in no time-so I simply tie-wrapped the CC 85HV across the spruce strips-with the tie-wraps fairly loose around the in- and out- leads:

This has worked well for mea couple of carbon-fibre tubes would have done the same with more bling-factor.....

Thanks for posting the picture guys. It''s really appreciated.

I''ll be using an AXI F3A with the HV-85 and was told it would be close to the limit regarding current handling capability. It''s good to hear that it''s actually an under rated speed control...

Cheers
Jason.

No problems with the HV85 and the new firmware.. been using it for 2 years now.. motor AXI 5330/18 or 5330 FAI version.

Some of us have even tried the HV45 and have not had a problem..

A couple people I know have special versions of the 85HV with the heat sink removed to save weight and have no problems with heat. These are factory guys and I don''t think this mod is available for the rest of us but it does show that the 85 is plenty capable.
