Just about there --add floats and you can have an other "spruce Goose" almost a shame to cover but it is required for flight should have made 2 then you would have one in the bones martin

Bob,

'Tis a thing of beauty.

This is the point where you wish you could leave it uncovered to show off your handiwork but then again, it will look great with covering.

Can't wait to see what colors you choose.

That is a fine-looking model.

Dan,
Thanks for your kind comments.

I'm really enjoying this build.

She will be covered in matt-finish Litespan in Cream with Deep Green contrasts (in keeping with the vintage theme)

The wing and tail surfaces are covered.
I want to run my control pushrods through the fuse prior to covering.

I've almost got an ARF!

I'll install the windshield after radio gear.

The dark engine compartment should showcase the britework on the engine nicely

Bob,

It's looking good so far.

One of these days I have to get a super lightweight radio and try this little stuff.

Nice thing about small models is you can have a lot of them.

No evil bay for this one - thanks Dan!

I had to remove more material from the inside of the cowl to help get the carb on and off - getting pretty good at it now.

Ran up the motor last night on the 7x3 APC prop and got 9500 rpm and the idle stop (as received) permitted 4,600 rpm. The little carb reacts very well to throttle application with out stumbeling or hesitation. If let to idle for a while at low stop it may hickup as the throttle is opened briskly but I'm sure this will get better as the motor is run in more - or I get more familiar with my settings.

The 4,600 idle really sounds like a low idle after listening to the engine at full song! I'm very pleased with the results! It sounds so good at idle! Can't wait to make a pass in front of the flight line at idle!

Also after a couple of attempts she will run out the little fuel bowl completely in 6min 30 seconds at full throttle. This surprised me as I was afraid I'd only get 1.5-2 minutes out of that little thimble.[8D]

I've got about 15minutes run time on her now.

The 9,500rpm on 7x3 prop yields 10.4 ozs. static thrust and my plane weighs 8 ozs - think I'll be using my throttle!

I am really surprised and pleased at the power this little thoroughbred engine is capable of.

For comparision,

I ran up my PAW .55 rc on a 7x4 prop and it turned 8,400 rpm and idled down to 5,300 this is generating just over 8ozs. static thrust and I've been flying it in a 16.7 oz model. I really need to run the PAW on the same 7x3 prop as the pb.33.

Glued the side windows on day before yesterday and set up all night. Glued the windshield last night and will critique this evening.
I will adhere small finishing strips (glazing trim) of covering to blend in and hopefully keep errant diesel fuel from migrating underneath. The canopy glue takes forever[&o]

I don't have excessive ground clearence with the 7" prop - s'pose the designer never thought a cox .020 could swing a 7'' prop.

Should be able to maiden Saturday morning - all the stars are in alignment......wife out of town, winds forecast low, Flying field available.

I'll try to have someone at the field get some airborne shots.

Sucessful maiden! Alameda Naval Station

First flight aft cg - plane goes in to a nose up hover. Hovering Diesel 3D - [:'(] Was able to nurse it around the pattern with down elevator.

This is not your Daddy's Mercury

Moved battery in front of gear bulkhead for flight 2.
Flew very well, points and climbs straight up well - I'll gladly trade some thrust for pitch speed.
You gotta hold your own in the pattern.

The motor ran very well and carb idled down nicely - sounded great down the flight line - was able to extinguish it in extended inverted flight.

I'll try that nice black 6x4 prop that came with the motor[8D] next time out. Get this Mercury some giddy up!

Congratulations! Especially about getting it down again with the rear CG!!! - not good! How long a flight did you get out of the little fuel tank? Did it turn out to be as nice a day as you thought?? It was nice down here in Santa Cruz.... I spend some time today breaking in a new engine and running a couple of my other diesels.. Got to get another plane together!!! I wan't to fly up there before it is all over!

Rocketbob,

Sounds like everything worked out well. I really like your little Mercury.

Old-time FF models are great and the miniatures are little gems.

Bet that PB engine runs even sweeter as it gets more time on it.

Keep us informed.

Great you got it on terra ferma the right way after all that work that plane iis not designed to hover, looks looks you had the power to pull it off (recovered) like the childrens book "the little engine that could" great power plant in well designed and built aircraft, now the fun starts did you have the period shoes?? martin

Chevy - yes very nice on Sat. wind held off for a bit.
Not a long flight 3-4 minutes then some inverted flight -which ran the pickup dry and put out the flame and dead sticked her in at my feet.

Alameda may not be lost. They found some endangered sturgeon living in the bay so the Navy may have to cancel the dredging plans.
Any one for chumming the fish! So we may be able to keep it but no final word as yet.

Dan - The little engine just purrs on and gets smoother. Glad she didn't hic-up when doing my 3Dhover in the pattern on the first fright.

DieselDan - No new shoesYeah the Hover was not pretty. the 6x4 will give about 11 mph more pitch speed and plenty of thrust

Ran her up yesterday with the 6x4 and it gets easier and easier to start the little engine!
The 6x4 pb prop is just so elegant in contrast to the gray APC. I can't wait to fly her with the pb prop - weekends are just spaced to far apart[&o]. It seems the wind picks up to much by the time I can shed my ankle chain (work day), but if I get a calm evening she will get a toss during the week.

I fly some of my electrics from a hill in SF and have had good luck retrieving them and not generating to many complaints. There is a local ordenance in SF that outlaws all gas model airplane engines. I imagine it is sound driven, so I think I may push it and my little diesels may not be noticed.

Oh and I forgot to mention how fun it was to taxi out from the pits to the flightline with the little engine idling - cracking, farting, popping - sounding great! Only to be outdone by the sound of the pass along the flightline at idle and the rush of acceleration as the throttle was opened. - The little (and I mean little) carb really performs great and is very precise.
