Is it necessary to run a well tuned gas engine up to full power after starting, as most are accustomed to doing with a glow engine ? It seems to me that I have read that this is not necessary with a gas engine. Do you do this and why ?

I seem to remember seeing many a full size airplane run up to full power before moving onto the hot ramp. Don't know why it would be any different for our smaller versions. You would TRUST that the engine is in working order before taking off? I'd trust, but then I would VERIFY!!

Probably no reason anyone would want to know how well their engine was running and if they had full power available prior to take off. Probably doesn't matter if throttle response is as crisp as anticipated. Really no reason for that at all...........

+1 for clearing the throat. Actually make sure it is capable of. The plane should be well secured in place to do this.

Especially before you start up the engine

What kind of problem did you see with motor during full run-up?

i say, run it up and down a few times. can't hurt anything as long as the plane is tied down. you may discover that it might pull lean or run to rich and blubber at top end. most times not.....but it could change do to a different oil you have switched to etc. it pays to check it out for a few seconds. it sure can't hurt to know your motor is putting out, when you throw the coals to it on take off............happy landings.......RON

Run Forest, run!
just don't go on and on and on like this guy at our field. It is really annoying to listen to a glow screaming for 10min on the ground while your trying to fly. Then he crashs anyway on take off because he leaned it to death

I love it!
We have the same types. WOTin the pitts with endless tinkering just to have it flame out 10 ft. off the ground.

I like to let it warm up and then do a couple of run ups to full throttle before I taxi. It is a good time to check and make sure everything is running right, no unusual vibrations, and no twitchy throttle servos. I have had all of those at one time, or another.
