Default Midwest extra 300 Gas engine size?

I'm new to gas engines.

I've recently aquired a Midwest Extra 300 (80" span). I'm thinking of purchasing a Zenoah G62 for the aircraft. Would this engine/aircraft combination allow hovering?

Any other suggestions for powering a Midwest Extra 300?

Cheers,

Marcus

The Zenoah g62 is too heavy for the power it puts out. I would recommend that you try a ZDZ60, Brison 3.2-4.2, Taurus or one of the other electronic ignition engines. You will LOVE how it flies the IMAC patterns.

I also agree with the G62 being to heavy. I would suggest a ZDZ 50 or BME 50. You need to keep this plane light. If you go heavy on the nose you will have to add weight to tail tail. My BME 44 swings a junk Top Flight 20 X 8 at 7000 rpm and I am still on the first gallon of gas. That is 22 LBS of thrust and it will get stronger during break in. I am also going to get a better prop. How much does your extra weight?

I really believe that anything over a 3.2 in this airframe is complete overkill. No doubt the the G-62 will fly the airplane well but with that much weight in the nose it is really going to lose its friendly traits.

I have owned a couple that I have use my well broken in Brisson 2.4 on and have never wanted for power. I know others have said that they needed more or were dissappointed with the 2.4 but mine has always been great. I use a mejzlik 19x8 and it flies wonderfully at around 15 pounds. I don't do 3-D but vertical is exceptional and all the pattern maneuvers are easily possible.

If I were wanting more power I would look into a BME 50 or at the ZDZ 40 / 50. Like any aerobatic airplane it needs to stay light to perform well all around, if you can find a good high power light engine use it, if not then stay away from the heavy high power ones.

grpilot, doe you have the BME 44 in the extra? I like to tinker and was considering this plane with a converted Poluan 46cc. If you do have 44 in the extra how is it for power? Any info would be appreciated.

I don't have my Extra done yet. I am going to use my new BME 44. It should fly good. I just hope it does not come out heavy. I am hoping for 15 - 15 1/2 pounds. That will give me 1.5:1 thrust too weight. Maybe more when I engine breaks in.

My Midwest Extra300 is powered by a BME50. It will hover, and pull out very decently. As far as forward flight to vertical...just add a few clicks of throttle and she keeps on goin outta sight, you only have to add throttle if you let it slow down to much, and then just ask it, and it will go, nearly effortlessly.
At 15lbs I did take some measures to lighten the structure, I'm pretty sure though it would weigh in at 16+++lbs at least, with a Zenoah.
You would have the power...no doubt, but might not be able to take advantage of a decent wing loading, and that could hinder performance a bit.
I've compared my Extra w/BME to a Lanier Cap w/G62, and would take my Extra anyday.....any flippin day.
Also...unless your 62 is equipped with electronic ign.(that's about $125 add on I think), you also won't be able to take advantage of starting ease either.
The BME starts in about 5 flips literally, does not miss a beat.
There's also other engines out that are real hot for these planes...I've heard good things about Taurus, Brison...another one with a good trac-record...Don't forget DA is supposed to come out with a new 50 very soon too.
I just read in another forum about BME coming out with a 55 next...hopefully it won't take to long...as it was getting mine took 3 months.
Good luck.
Look at something in the 50cc range though..you won't regret it.
That will be one of the best flying planes you've ever owned too. Just build light.

Default What Size Prop for BME50?

DGrant,

What size prop are you using on the BME 50? Also are you using a Dubro 688 rail mount system?

G62 engines are much maligned for excessive weight..First we gotta compare apples to apples..Take off the heavy mag rotor and source coil, turn down the hub to about 2 inches ..Then.....A 4 lb electronic ignition G62, that starts with your little finger and swings a 22-8 about 7500 rpm is not enough ??
Good used G62, about $300.00..(they don't wear out)
Ignition $150.00
Total about $450.00
Bang for the buck ???
The ThrustHp chart shows 38 lbs..It's optimistic...
Gotta be at least 32..On a 16 lb plane ??
Go Figure............
I guess all the manufacturer's hype wins out......

Default Midwest extra 300 Gas engine size?

I flew the Extra first with a Zenoah G45 and 20X10 Menz prop, limited power. I am currently flying it with G62and Menz 22X10. Very good verticals but also a very high landind speed. The weak spot on the Extra is how the landing gear comes atached to the fuselage. If you want fo fly with a heavy engine you have to reinforce this part of the airplane.
Have fun!

My BME 50, getting 7150rpm with 22x10 menz s, and 7300 with a moki 22x10, still running lawnboy, and 2 gallons run through it. Takes a 16lb edge ballistic.

Default Midwest extra 300 Gas engine size?

These planes fly well.I have the midwest cap, bme50,weight 18.5lbs DRY,19-20 lbs wet. Got it from a fellow modeler who builds "sturdy."
The bme has good good verticle, but not unlimited at this weight. Im sure the g62 or g45 would fly it fine....

My previous post was a little concise.Engine choice is pretty much personal.I have two friends with Brison 3.2 's in Extras the size of yours, one at 19lbs & the other at 17.5lbs.Both perform very well although the lighter the aircraft the better.I also have the same airframe & with particular attention to weight (or the reduction thereof) mine is 15.5 lbs & this is with 3 battery packs as I'm running an i4c power bus.
The only reason I opted for the Taurus was after extensive research on the net it got very good reviews & I particularly like the fact that the crank is supported by a rear bearing as well.
But really a Brison 3.2,BME 50,DA50 or the Taurus would all serve you well.Good luck.
