Default DA50 Quits running

Guys,
I have a DA50 which now has about 1 gallon through it and the needles have been adjusted so that the engine flys OK. It has one minor problem, start it up in the pitts area, let it warm up and check all systems OK, then release model restraint and pull the plane gently backwards to clear pitt box and fuel container at which point the engine stops, Why?

Yours
Pete

Jon,

It's probably a simple fuel issue. Either an air leak, an improperly installed clunk, or a blocked vent line in some positions. If it runs fine when it's level, but quits when the angle of the plane changes, it's not likely the engine or the carb itself.

Sounds like he needs to have the pulse line modification done to it. The early 50's, up to about serial #3000 or so had this problem. Any time you raised the tail after starting, the engine would just die. I believe they said fuel was pooling in the reed valve block. Here's a pic of my original pulse line set up for the carb. The fuel line is running from the crankcase to the carb. After the modification, the line runs from the black carb isolator block to the carb, and the port on the crankcase is plugged.

Mine also had similar pbm during break-in period, as well as badly leaking fuel from back of the carb. DA asked me to send in the engine immediately after the break-in period. Both problems are gone now. I recall the quiting problem is due to the fact that break-in gasoline contains a lot of oil.

In any case, the best way to fix it is to send it in. The idle could be set to a little bit of high for a temp fix.

If he doesnt have the carb mod than that is the problem..not the oil content..DA will send the upgrade kit and it takes about 10min to fix..

Guys,
Thanks for the thoughts so far. My DA50 is new, bought it late January this year, so I would expect to have the latest carb version (but how do I tell?) and it does have the later pulseline position (ie on the black block). The problem only manifests itself when I move the plane backwards, gently when on the ground, runs OK in the air.
BTW sending the engine back to DA from the UK is bit of a pain!

I would not worry about too much about it, if the engine is still in break-in period. Just set the idle a little bit of high and move it gently :-). Not a bad idea to give DA a call. --qc

That's definitely the pressure pulse line location problem. Like Josey said get the kit and install it yourself.

I wouldn't guarantee you have the latest mod so suggest checking it out. Send an email or call DA and they can tell you base on your serial number.

the puddling associated with some engine setups can be a real crazy maker
I once had a reed valve engine which would -on the test stad settle down to a rythmic change in idle speed
By simply tilting the stand slightly to one side - the problem would disappear.
Once I saw this - I tried changing the tank position -all over the place - the problem was simply fuel puddling in the crankcase .
In the DA, the pulseport on the DA position was apparantly the culprit .
On some carbs I have run -- the engines would change from rich to lean simply by inverting the model -tho the problem was ,again not tank position
these suckers all run by virtue of a demand regulator on one side of the carb and this is sometimes a finicky setup - usually once a carb is selected -which best matches a particular engine -- the problems go away
