Default Less expensive opto engine kill switch

Just trying to see how many people have used this. It's a third the cost of the Smart Fly. I bought two but I would like to see if other people have had success with them before putting it on my plane.

I'm interested in the same info...[8D]

I've been using the ED stuff and it's about the same price or a tad more than the Smart-Fly, so I'm curious about the significant price difference. That usually indicates something that does not work as well...

I bought one of those, it works great. It seems to be a high quality piece.

The biggest difference between this and th Smartfly ignition cutoff switch is the optical isolation on this unit is built into a single chip, while the Smartfly uses two circuit boards connected by a fiber-optic cable.

I haven't discovered a decrease in range with this unit.

My buddy's keeps shutting off in a range check but his plane was having noise problems before installing this unit. So it's not likely the unit's quality. It's doing what it's supposed to. He was wondering if it was introducing noise into the rx....causing the problem. I kind of doubt it though.

I would expect the previous noise problems are to blame, as the ignition switch will kill the ignition if I shut down the transmitter. It requires a solid signal from the receiver to remain "on".

Well he needs to resolve his RF problem before anything else, but now you've got me wondering.

My ED requires that the tx and rx be turned on to switch on the ignition power, but unless I program the failsafe for the channel I'm using for the kill switch to off (at least I think that will work) the ignition does not turn off when the tx is shut down. I'm using a 9 channel Futaba rx which has channel 9 as on/off not proportional, so that is what activates the ED switch.

My own thought is that the failsafe should cut the throttle to a low setting, but I don't want the engine being killed by the kill switch should I encounter temporary glitches which might cause the rx to failsafe.

How are you programming/using your kill switch?

Mine is on the gear channel so maybe it is set to the "down" mode in failsafe. I wouldn't want a temporary failsafe glitch to kill the ignition, but if I really lose control I definitely want it off if the plane is heading for somebody.

Well that IS the conundrum...

You don't want it getting away from you where it might get someone hurt, but I don't want it quitting if it gets glitched or hit either, that's my reasoning for going to a low power setting for failsafe. I witnessed several problems with jet powered models at a rally last year where the engines quit due to the rx's going into failsafe. IIRC from what the guys were saying, AMA requires that turbines must shutdown on failsafe activation and that apparently was what was happening as there is a readout on those jets telling you what happened. Unfortunately, two of them did not survive in big enough pieces to get that readout...[]

Thanks for your info.
