Looking for suggestions.... I'm considering Z23, RCS 180, OS 120 4 cycle....

Anyone with experience with this kit I would appreciate your ideas.

I have built 2 of these. One wutha ST300 and one with a Z23. The 3000 had plenty of power but it never idled well. The Z23 ran well but was a little low on power. Needed a long take off run even with flaps. If I was to do another I would use a Fuji 32. I am running one now in a PAC GeeBee Model Y 82 " and its great.

I used an OS 1.08 in mine - plenty of power...

I was at the field today....really nice day.....anyway had a oldtime flier suggest a Quadra 35 for this installation..

Any comments? I think it might be nose heavy any opinions?

SpringAir worked for me.....but you really should get some functional struts (i.e. Robart)....

Like you I've just started the continuous weekends, it's great !
Maybe your T-28 is much bigger, but I used a Saito 170 R3 radial in a CMPro 70" FW-190. It was a perfect match for the model and fitted neatly inside the cowl with about 1/2 " to spare around the rocker covers.
Not cheap, but it sure looks good, and the sound ..........

This one is 1/5 scale weighs about 12 to 14 pounds.....but the way I build it will probably come out a couple pounds heavier.

I have a OS 160 mounted straight up in mine, it clears the cowling ( shortest head cylinder available) and still gives you space underneath for the retracts. I used a j-teck pitts style exhaust. It required some modification like removing the exhaust stacks and making a single exhaust tube straight down. I use a three bladed graupner prop a 15 x 10 and I couldn't ask for better performance. Flies like a jet at high speeds and slows way down with flaps to a crawl. If you go with spring air make sure you use robart struts and use drill rod for your wire anything else and you will be fixing gear all the time. If I had to do it all over I would go with as heavy a robart strut I could mount.

Thanks for the info......I think I will go for the Robarts still looking on engine tho.....I really would like to use gas mainly for economy, I guess, we pay a lot for glow fuel. Our gas is up to 1.79 now and climbing

my t28 1/5 scale WS 2057mm = 81 inch is about 4,5kg = 10lbs covered, incl. spring air retracts but without any rc-components.

but what engine?
a supre tigre s3000 is waiting for performance a home but I think this one is much to strong and the 2s sound will not fit to this fine plane.

any ideas/experience for a got performance 4s, throwing an eye already to saito fa120 or 150 or maybe os fs120.

how about the flight performance with a 120 4s?
is there enough space for the big 4s cylinder in the hood?

I just sold my pica 1/5 scale t-28. It weighed 14# and had a YS 120 for power. The engine was marginal for power. I would recommend a Saito 150 or 180 depending on how much your plane weighs. I used Springair retracts which were originally sold with the kit. I would use solid gear struts as the wire ones bent a lot. Springaire now makes them. I have a set of Springaires in my Hanger 9 150 size P-51 and they work great.

YS120 ? if you mean Yamada engine i can not compare, these are not sold here in austria. can you give some figures and performance-datas about the YS120?

what about the installation - did you have to cutout your hood?

I believe Yamada makes the YS engine line. I feel the YS 120 is 25% more powerful than an OS 120.
I think you are going to have a hard time coming in at less than 14# with all components installed on the
T-28. I had to make a small cutout in the cowl for the front of the valve cover with the engine mounted upright.
As I said before, the 120 wasn't enough power. Try something bigger. With the YS 120 the plane would struggle to takeoff, but once in the air it flew beautifully. I liked the way it flew, but not the takeoff. Mine was the yellow version as seen on a 3view with the kit.
