I just purchased a TorqMaster 180 starter and I must say it leaves alot to be desired. It will barely turn over my .90 Surpass and it will NOT turn over my 1.8 cu in Poulan converted gas engine using a fully charged 12v batt., when my standard Sullivan starter will turn over my 1.8 just fine.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE TORQMASTER 180 FOR LARGER ENGINES!

I use 24v as well. Only short bursts. Cranks over my Zenoah 26cc with no problems.

I found 24 volts to be a bit much. It just kicked to hard for me when cranking my gassers. What seems to work great is a 4cell 2200 lipo! lasts me all day, is small and light. I was shocked at how well this works!

I have one and I don't care much for it. I put on one of their large spinner cones and, operating off a 12V, it will turn over up to a 1.25 four stroke using a T-6 style spinner. But normally I use a Sullivan Dynatron with the NiCad pack at 14.4V. That will turn over anything up to a 1.8 four stroke.

I just re-wired my starter jack on my panel so I can run 18v. Now it turns my Poulan with no problem. Seems to be a easy solution to a common problem. The one 12v and one 6v batt now creates a charging situation though.

Mines works great. I use the lawn battery also, and have no problem turning a saito 180 over. It would not turn it over with the small flight box battery.

I even tried my 900 cranking amp jumper box and that didn't do it. It's the same jumper box that recently had to start my Dodge Ram with a 360 in it when the batt went dead. I doubt batt capacity is the problem. I feel it's just an over stated starter capability that can be compensated for by adding more voltage.

I just got one of these a couple of weeks ago. I'm starting a cantankerous 26cc engine, my standard starter wasn't really cutting it on this larger engine, it would turn the engine over using the car battery, but just barely. I ordered the Torqmaster 180, tried it on my battery box and it wouldn't turn the engine over, but I expected that, the battery in the box is OK for the 40's and 60's but didn't cut it on the larger engines. I hooked this one up to my car battery and proceeded to try it on the 26cc, WOW, I was really impressed, it not only turned it over, it really spun that engine! All it needs is enough amperage available from the battery to do the job.
I'm very happy with the Torqmaster 180 on my 1/4 scale plane with the 26cc engine!

I guess it would be ok, if you were to park your car in the middle of the pit area or lug a 50lb car battery to the field.
I have now talked with several people from many clubs and a great majority have the same thing to say about the TorqMaster 180. A very few are fortunate enough to have one that will start a larger engine by switching to a larger battery but soon they become tied of lugging that heavy battery to the field. They then elect to put there TorqMaster in a drawer somewhere and purchase a starter from a different manufacturer, one that will do the job using much smaller, lighter 12v battery

Can i use a 14.8v lipo battery with the torqmaster 180?? The addtional voltage will not damage the starter? (for which a 12v is recommended).

I don't see why not. However, you will need a HIGH capacity LiPo with a HIGH "C" rating. A LiPo like that will likely be very cost prohibitive. I have two SLA batteries in my starter box. one 12v7A and one 6v7a for 18v. Cost is about $45, that wakes up the TorqMaster. I have much less trouble spinning my 1.9ci gas motor now.
If it smokes the TorqMaster, So be it!
I hear of boat guys, routinely using 24v without much trouble on their TorqMasters.

I have been using the 180 starter with 2 - 2200 mah 3 cell lipos in series. Have used it all summer to turn a Saito 180. No problems. Without the extra kick and would not turn over the Saito. I agree, if it burns up I'll get another one.

Hi. I also got a torqmaster 180 about a week ago to start my saito 180 on a twist 150. i only succeeded in getting it to turn the 180 over twice. Im using a 12 volt car battery. It almost acts like theres something wrong with the starter because it has essentially the same amount of torq as my torqmaster 90. Any suggestions?

I found that you need at least 18 volts to do a good job. Switched to the sullivan starter last year. Way better than torqmaster even with 12 volts. That saito 180 really needs the power. It cranks hard.

Here is a link to the sullivan starters. I went with the Dynotron. worth every penny. if you stay with the torqmaster use two 3 cell lipos in series. it will turn the 180. It probably wont last more than a few months with the extra voltage. The dynotron turns the saito like its running. no problem.

Save your money folks. Just cut the shank off any cheap starter and put it in your Craftsman Cordless Drill. Flip it to high and reverse and your in business.

Portable and very powerful. 21V off the charger, 17.5V nominal. Will put in 1700s this year.
I agree about upping the voltage to spin larger motors. Volts = power, amps = duration.
Nothing wrong with your 180, just buy an 18V-24V battery. Mine is 10 years old, a great starter. I have 3 Sullivan's gathering dust.
