Default Engine choices

I have a Goldberg Tiger 60 (70"span) that needs a engine. I've been going back and forth over what motor to put in it. The engines have been choosen by price to power and quailty as I see it. The goal is a strong reliable engine for the next 10+ years. Workhorse aerobat.
Also, I am open to any ideas other then what I have listed but have considered the price issue on most great engines.

Ok here we go!
Thank you RCU!

I voted for the Magnum .91 4-stroke....because I run them and know they are:

inexpensive and easy to buy
easy to break-in
real easy to tune
have a great warrantee
can get parts for it
good power for that plane....

....if you wanted to go economy style, I'd consider the Tower .75 two stroke,
for a hundred bucks. [8D]

If you are going to be flying often and expect it to last 10 years without replacing valves, rockers, pushrods, etc. Then I would consider a .75 or .90 two stroke. I would consider the .75 Tower (or GMS), .74 Fox, and .90 Supertigre, among others. If you must have a four stroke I would consider a Saito 1.00 if it tends to be nose heavy, if it needs a little nose weight or if you prefer to spend less then consider the TT .91 four stroke. That is one strong .91 four stroke.

I also need some advice on a 90 size 2-stroke for my new Extra 300. I have heard bad things about the OS91 which is making me quite reluctant to buy one. So far I have had good luck with OS's but have never had one fo the 91 versions.

From your list I chose the Irvine 72. Why? Based on my experience with the 39, I can see that it is a quality piece of machinery that will do the job and last. If you go for it, I'm sure you'll be glad you did over the cheapo Chinese engines like the Tower or GMS... (just my opinion of course).

As for me, I've also got a Tiger 60 sitting in its box awaiting an engine, but I've got an OS 65LA and an OS FS70 looking for a home... even so, I might still consider that Irvine myself

I voted for the TT, but I would also pick the Enya. The rest are pretty much engines that I would never buy. If the GMS is the same thing as the Tower .75, I'd probably consider it also, as the Tower .75 is a darn good engine.

Pretty lousy selection save for the Irvine and the Enya. The Irvine .72 pretty much runs like a .90

Hobbsy Ole Man,

I have grown to respect your opinions have never heard you be so prejudiced towards any specific engine. You always seem to find something good in any brand. Personally Mars, I would choose one you don't have listed the Saito 72 and I would keep the plane light. The plane you have selected would be a good entry level low wing tail dragger aerobat. Have fun!!!!!

William, I agree 100% on the Saito .72 idea, it would be the ultimate choice and would have run away with the poll had it been part of it. Does 61 make me old? Nah Old guys don't have as many toys as I do.

I have a Tiger 60 I built, with a TT .91FS. Great motor, great plane. You couldn't go wrong. The sound of a four stroke on that plane makes me enjoy it twice as much as a 2-stroke would.

With the TT mounted upright in that plane, just prime it, put on the glow starter, look at it, and it starts. The TT is a little heavy, but the plane balanced perfectly with it the first time, and would probably need some weight with any lighter motor.

Well, thats what the battery is for!!!!!!! Saito 72 has the power of a conventional 91 fourstroke. Weight is about 4 to 5 ounces less and will swing the same sized prop. I don't think he will have a problem with the cg, I have seen this model balanced with even lighter two strokes without adding lead.

The 3 I am most interested in are:
TT 4c-91
Enya 4c-90
Irvine 72

The rest were thrown in as maybe's. The Irvine has good power to wieght. Enya reliablity. And I have had good luck with TT(My 46 is a powerhouse!). Im sorry I left out so many engines. Im really just after a reliable, strong motor that isnt a car payment. I do understand that a engine is a investment but I'm after the undervalued stock.

I have spent alot of time there. The Irvine is yet unrated. The Enya is not listed. I have been searching the net for reviews and such on these 2 engines. Not much out there that Ive found. Enya is spoken of well here in forums, I was just hoping to be a little more plane specific. Thanks for any input!

Ok Mars,

All of the fourstrokes are going to be the amount of a small car payment. Here are a couple of your choices with price and weight. TT 91 fourstroke is $199.99 weighs 25.7 ounces. Magnum 91 fourstoke is $189.99 weighs 22.4 ounces. Magnum 80 fourstoke is $169.99 weighs about the same as the Magnum 91. Saito 72 and 91 are each respectively, $224.99 and $239.99 and weigh 16.6 ounces and about 19 ounces. Both Saitos will out power the others, both are extremely dependable, and the only engines that out run them are the YS's, Rossi's, Jets, and The Nelsons. Hope this will help you in your deciding. Have fun!!!!!

Well my first TT91fs is almost 7 years old now, and still running good. I am breaking in a new one on a UCD 60 and it does have a lot more power than the old one, so 10 years is not out of the question.

Guys, are you sure about the Saito 72?
Surely the Tiger 60 is designed primarily for a 60 2 stroke which would be around 22ozs. I've got both the Saito 72 and the OSFS70 and I'm sure the OS is slightly more powerful but heavier, although not as heavy as a 60 2 stroke...

Default RE: Engine choices

I am puzzled by the Enya 90 4c choice. If I go to the Enya website (http://www.modelrectifier.com), they only list two four-strokes, the 53 and the 1.55. If I search through some Enya dealer's websites, most only carry those same two engines, although 80's appear. A search on Enya generally indicates that the importer (Altech) has questionable service (with some good reports), and may not import the entire Enya line.

I was interested in these, but would be reluctant to buy a motor (given the stated importance of reliability and longevity) that is not currently supported by the importer/distributor. If their ability to service current motors is iffy, imagine the difficulties in getting parts for discontinued motors. Am I right or wrong here?

The Saito .72 certainly is worthy of mention in this group turning either a 12x8 or 13x6 10,000 plus.
