# 23 here, all i can attest to is that my 100 lost the rear bearings while useing all syn after approx 60 flights, and since using Bills advise of using castor about 7-8 months ago(approx 350 flights) my engine still runs like a top!!
thanks Bill

Yeah I'm with you gjeffers. I wasn't sayin' I was gonna run the sucker on pure synth, just that that is what is written in the manuals for my 82a. As I said to Bill earlier, I have been using 5% castor religiously for years and have never had a problem. Now Saito produces this piece of confusion.
I'm just ignoring it.

All:
If you think you are listed in the Saito Silliness, please go to page 27 and check your user name. If I have it messed up or you don't find your name please let me know.
Thanks.
Bill.

The very first engine i bought when i got into the hobby is a Saito 80 that i still have and is a really sweet running engine and must have approx 500 flights on it, prbably will never sell it. I also have a Saito 30 open rocker MK1 engine that was new in box and have since done the breakin on. I can tell that this will be a great runner too. I had it idling at 2200 rpm and was swinging a 10x6 zinger at approx 8500 rpm after the initial breakin. I have since bought another Saito 30 open rocker MK1 new in the box that i will keep that way. I don't know why i havn't bought more Saitos over the years, Saito truly does build quality engines that run great.

Hi again Bill and hello to you Av,
You were correct in your first assumption Bill: The Oz manuals ARE different.
There is no misread as Av might be suggesting, the manual specifically states DO NOT use castor oil due to high exhaust temps. I do not have the manual with me at work (Sssh that's where I am at the moment - he he) but trust me, our manuals are definitely at odds with yours.
Cheers,
TC

I wonder what the effects of the high exhaust temps could be other than the one obvious one that I know of. Surely a discolored muffler couldn't be a reason to risk harm to your engine. Must be some other reason.

Thanks. I clean it a lot, pretty much after every day of flying or whenever I see a speck or two of dirt on it. Yep, about 130 or so flights on it.

The lightening of a cam gear is generally considered to be a bad idea, several single cylinder racing engines actually have a flywheel cast as part of the cam to reduce tortional impulses caused by the cam followers when they go over the top of the cam lobe from slamming the gears against each other.

Was there any attempt to clean the muffler after each flight also?

I have a Saito 100. It has about 2.5 gal through it. Runs fine. But I noticed that the push rod covers leak. (oil/fuel?)
It is mounted inverted. It leakes out of the Black rubber seals next to the cam housing. Is this normal?

An auto engine has so many cam followers riding on it that the acceleration and deceleration does not occur when the cam followers go over the hump like it does on a single whether a racing engine or not.

Yes, in the same manner as the rest of the plane and engine, wiping with a rag or a paper towel and glass cleaner, but no serious attempt to remove the discoloration since I figured it would just come back. I also use an old toothbrush and sometimes q-tips to clean the engine fins and hard to reach places.

Wouldn't the application of a bit of high temp silicone in the threads and muffler joints prevent the leakage that is baking onto the muffler?

I don't know. I would like to try that if I could ever find some of that stuff.

It's the silicone they sell in automotive supply stores for making exhaust related gaskets for cars.

Hi Guys,
I am just waiting for this aeroplane to clear the Wharf and Customs [link=http://www.cmpairplane.com/lancair-50.htm]CMPro/Lancair[/link] and am wondering if a Saito 56 is enough. The manufacturer has listed 50 to 63 size for four cycle engines.
Your recommendations most welcome guys. [&:]

Gjeffers,
Hey!
Remember me?
My UCD 60 is still going strong with the Saito 100 running flawlessly.
I really appreciated all the advice on the UCD thread this summer!
Let me have your address and I'll send you my muffler to clean...
Just kidding!
