Glow engine starter?
I wonder if I have to have a glo engine starter for a JBA .56 engine with a medium to hot plug? A friend recommends this starter http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXJ803&P=ML
but from this article here http://www.rc-airplane-advisor.com/h...ne-engine.html, I think a glow engine can be started by flipping the propeller? Please correct me if I'm wrong
thanks

If you are flying model airplanes, life would be easier than hand flipping with one of these in addition to the glow starter

You will also need a good 12 volt battery like from a lawn tractor or as recommended by Tower

Step 10 in your link states:
10) Only now, attach the glow plug igniter to the engine.
A very few glow engines have been reported to start without a glow igniter attached. But, 99.9% of the glow engines we use won't start simply by flipping. A glow igniter, or "Ni-Starter" is essential.

From your questions I would suggest that you get some help running the engine the first couple of times. RC engines are not that dificult to run but there is a learning curve in figuring out problems and fine tuning them.

The catalytic action between the methanol in the fuel and the platinum is there, but the oil and other additives dampen the reaction. Pure methanol would probably pop, and some where here, there is a thread that cautions doing errant flipping, because an engine started while it was being casually flipped, but it is probably a 1 in 10,000 chance. You have to power the plug.
Years ago at the hobby shop a guy came in and said his plane would not start. He pulled it out and set it up. He put the glow stick on it and stood back and said see it wont start. True.

If I buy this starter http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXLN90&P=M, do I still need to buy a battery for it? w8ye recommends batteries though

RE: Glow engine starter?
You need a electric starter motor with a 12 volt battery and a glow drive that has battery power. The starter turns your motor over and the driver makes your glow plug glow to ignites the fuel. I think you are confusing the two pieces of equipment. After the engine starts you must remove the glow driver.
I suggest you consult someone at a local flying club for instruction and training to learn how to fly. Without an instructor you will surely crash and ruin your plane. Good luck.

yes, just placed an order on kangkeusa website and paid through paypal. Hopefully they'll send the engine out. Did you try to place an order?
