Default Engine for Sig 4 Star 40

I would like to build a Sig 4 Star 40 with all the mods this winter and wondered what is a good engine choice, size and brand for this model to get best performance and balance. I have an old OS FSR 40, but was considering a OS 46 FX or TT 46 Pro, but is this too much power and weight? What do you Sig 4 Star guys recommend? Does this model typically balance tail or nose heavy? Flipstart

The 46 FX or the TT Pro would be great, but unless there's something wrong with the FSR 40, that should work just great too. It may not have the "Oomph" that the others do, but it will be plenty for the 4*

I have 46FX on 4*40 and with 11x5 APC it has unlimited vertical. It is my second plane and I don't think a 46FX is too much power for it and it is good to know if you get in trouble you can use power to get out of it. And for sure I put myself in trouble couple of times. And I am now trying to learn hovering with it. I can hold it hover for couple of seconds before loosing it and it is a different type of fun.

Balancing is no problem either and it is not hot to land and does not float on landings as some experienced with 40LA's or other light engines.

TT46 Pro would work also.

I just changed mine motor from an old OS 40 fp to a new super tigere 40. This is the first super tigere I have owned. I got it broke in this past weekend and flew it once. I haven't gotten it tuned perfectly yet. It is still rich on the low end needle I believe. Any way, I am impressed with the motor. I start it by hand with no problems. I believe I will be doing most flying with 2/3 throttle or less. I just like to fly around and am still learning. If you are looking for unlimited vertical, go with a larger motor.

I built a 4* 40 with some mods (1 bay short on the wings, extend the rudder by 1 inch, sheet the turtle deck, turn the canopy backward and trim it down) put a Saito 56 on it and it is so much fun you can't re-fuel fast enough. Good luck , Steve

A medium four-banger is always a good choice. I've had two with 48 Surpass engines, and my current one has a 52 Surpass. A Saito 56 would be good too.

I've had two Somethin' Extras, one with a two stroke and one with a four stroke, those three four-stroke powered 4 Stars, and I've flown several two-stroke powered 4 Stars. Four stroke engines, IMO, really make these planes come alive. The low-end torque coupled with the larger prop increases their agility by quite a bit, and expands the flight envelope.
