I got my US60 kit today. I'm thinking about doing it as a tail draggier with flaps and retracts. I have two engines that would work a ST75 and Saito 100. Which one should I use?

Go with the 75!

I am a 4-stroke junkie, but the US is one of the few planes I know of that matches better with a 2-stroke!

I'd like to join. I got a US 1000 in the box waiting to be built into a twin engine.

Then it will be a 2-stroke. The only thing I don't like about the ST is the big muffler. I guess I could look into a Macs muffler. I do have another 2-stroke option. My son has a Tower Hobbies 75 that he is not using but it needs a muffler and needle valve assembly.

May I join the club? I am starting to put together a US 60. It is an old kit - the box and the directions are yellowed. A member of my club had it in his closet for years. I have a new Fox 74 for the front of it. It will be a taildragger - tricycles don't do well on our rough grass field. I'm debating whether or not to do retracts and dual aileron servos.

Thanks Ken

Will I am going to build an US 60 at a 115%. I scaned all the small parts at 115% out of my 60 kit. Got my 115% prints today. My 115% wing is on order from Eureka Aircraft. It will be a tail dragger with retracts. Will post pictures as the build moves along. Next a US1000+ with an OS GT55.
wing span will be 69.5"
root 15.25"
tip 10.75"
stabilizer 27.5"
lenght 63"
engine OS 120 AX
cover will be glass and paint

I vote keep it simple with the ST75. I have the OS 75AX and it flys great. The engine is not oversized or overweight in the nose.

Guys,

Sad day today, my US is no more.

Lost all radio contact on the 3rd flight with my instructor at the sticks. The most alarming thing was she didn't spiral in straight away but continued to fly for a good 2-3 minutes - like a free flighter!

It was beyound the north end of the field when it slowly started into a bank and desending. There is an army base in that area - tightly packed with houses - I was extremely worried and fearing the worst but luckly (if there is such a thing when you crash) it went in on a sports field, so no injury to people or damage to property.

OK so a post mortum:

Futaba 7C 2.4gig. No previous porblems at all. Had 10.1 volt on transmitter, we turmed the Tx on and off several times in the period of lost control to try and re-establish the link, nothing. After sweeping up the wreck (well digging the engine out witha spade - it was in deep!) I tested the Rx battery - had 5.1v withload on a ESV. I did notice at the field (post crash) when I turned on the Rx I had a blinking greem LED on the Rx (my Tx was off at the time). At home it was red in the same state. I presume the blinking green was due to other 2.4gig systems operating at the field. Can anyone comment on this?

The only thing I can guess is that I didn't pull the rod for the Rx switch out enough to get the switch past the detent to "on" and that vibration in flight moved the switch to off. It did';t go into fail safe just stayed at last control about 50% throttle and level flight.

On one hand I'm totally bummed, on the other so thankful that no one else or their property was affected. it could have been way worse!

Thanks AM.

I was pleased with the scheme. All ultracote, the black was the carbon fibre stuff, it got great comments at the field.

It was a US60 with OS 75AX. I think theenginesgone too. Busted crankcase + muffler + crankshaft - looks as if it maybe bent - but it's hard to tell without a dial gauge or similar. Cost of those parts = one new engine.

I will buy another kit while they are available. Kit from Tower at $124USD less $20 discount , plus........ wait for it............ $117USD shipping to New Zealand !!!!Call it $300 local money on my doorstep.

Don't think I'll build it straight away, damn, I may have to buy a BARF just to get a plane in the air!

Still can't figure out what happened and the "fly away" has shaken my confidence, how someone (or their property) wasn't hurt makes me very lucky.

It must have been the switch 'cos the system has battery power andfail safe didn't kick in. Just total loss of everything, like on the bench when you are checking throws, etc.. and you turn off the receiver to hold the control surface at a deflection.

Cheers,

Gordie

Guys,

About to order another US60 kit from Tower to replace my totalled plane.

I am considering an OS95AX for power.

Same weight and size as the OS75AX, but more grunt. My previous planewas OK with the 75AX - it had vertical performance - but that engine vibrated a lot in the mid range. Itwas getting better all the time with more run time to be fair.

Anyone got any comments / experience with a 95AX in a US60? I really can't see any issues.

Wouldthe big blocks touque cause trim problems -saywhen you snap the throttle open?

I figure the larger prop won't be an issue as Imade longer gear on the last plane for 14" props. The gear is one of the few pieces I have that is still OK and can be reused.

Comments welcome.

Cheers,

Gordie</p>

Careful there. It's a .60 size plane. You've already gone from a .60 to a .65 to a .70 to a .75 to a .80 to .85 to a .90 and now a .95 engine. Next step is a 1.20 AX only 2.8oz more than a 95 AX or a 20cc gas engine.

I'd stay with the OS 75

I like ST engines myself.

AmishWarlord
Can you give me more information on the Macs muffler? Does it increase rpm, make it run better or just make it sound better and look nicer? I’m putting an ST .75 in my US60.

ST swing mufflers are ugly, heavy and tend to swing off the plane in flight. I like Macs because they are 1/3 the weight of the stock muffler and look better. They are just a muffler and not a tuned pipe so they just quiet the exhaust noise. They do this job really well and look good doing it.

A tuned pipe is quieter, ads more power, and makes the engine run better but give'n how good your last plane looked don't ruin it by hanging a sewer pipe off your plane. You all ready upgraded your planes HP going from a .61 to a .75 so no need for more power.

With the money you save getting a ST instead of a OS you can upgrade the ehaust system and put either a onboard glow system or fule pump in your plane.
