ahh, this all makes sense now....  you set up the bottom wing and level the fuse till the meter says 0 degrees. That's the reference point. Then you set the top wing to match the bottom all while making sure the fuse does not shift. And than, finally, the horizontal stabilizer....

do I have the right idea....   and I guess a meter is a must to do this.

-Yes sir, you are on the right track. Once you set the lower wing to zero degrees, then any other surface (upper wing, horizontal stab, etc) will be compared to zero degrees. This allows you to shim the upper wing to zero degrees for example, or shim the stab to whatever incidence you want it to be.
-Because an incidence meter has special clamps for the leading and trailing edges and because it is so accurate, it would be very tough to measure these angles accurately with just a level. The Robart meter is $38 at Tower Hobbies, maybe you can borrow one or get one when they have a sale?

This is very similar to what we used to do on biplanes. But what we did was level the thrust line first buy blocking the fuse until the thrust line is 0 degrees. Then adjust your wings and stab to what ever the instructions call for.

Sorry I almost forgot, look for fiberglass specialties on the web, they carry the cowling and aluminum landing gear as well.

Did you try TNT Landing Gear? Under Page 1/Goldberg/Ultimate kit, they list #LG4-158, 3/16" T6 aluminum gear for $35.

Found an opportunity to get some flying in and remembered to bring everything with me this time!(forgot the interplane struts last week-end when Iwent out of town to maiden, DOH)

My repaired Hitec 5625s came back today and found their way into the tail pronto. I had some Power HD 1201 MGs in there before. Much smoother travel and more confidence with the Hitecs, imo. Once all checked out, I headed for "an undisclosed location" to get some testing in. I had a moment of deja-vu as I started taxi tests. A little breezy for my comfort zone for a maiden but found it all to easy to advance the throttle once everything did what it was supposed to do.

Awesome combination! Stable platform and lots of power available. She can jump into the air in less than ten feet! Strong vertical climbs and will putter along nicely. No surprises. A few clicks of trim was all that she needed. Need some work on the amount of throw and exponential in the radio as it is uber sensitive but that is all me. Both plane and motor have more than exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to start really giving it a work out.

She is a beauty, Revy! Congratulations on the maiden, building the kit and doing the maiden flight on your Ultimate is quite an accomplishment. I'm curious, how much break-in time did you give the DLE 20 before you were ready to fly?

Thanks CanDo!

Maidened her on the third tank. One on the bench, one in the plane before she flew on the third fill. Only a couple of flights so far, but a lot smoother than my DLE55 at the same fuel time. Need to use a hand held starter though. She has a hard time priming I find initially after the fuel is drained for transport/storage. By hand it won't move much in the fuel line, but put a starter on it and it sucks it in PDQ.

Hey Guys!! I finally got my Ultimate out and got some movies of it today to share with you! It's something I wanted to as a member of the Brotherhood for a very long time! First off, please excuse the camera...I recently got it and it is not very good. Second, my son is the cameraman, and he did his best, but he doesn't do this for me often, obviously, haha. Third, the voice in the first vid is mine and I hate sounding like Mickey Mouse. Last, it was a blast to take the plane up for three good flights on a nice day in Salem, OR. The plane just performs well every time with the OS 120 Surpass up front. Hope you enjoy. I built this plane in 1992 and except for 6 years when we lived in HI, this bird has been flying regularly. And here's one last video of me with the Ultimate and my friend with his Golden Skies Bampf chasing around and making low passes today. My son lost the planes in the sky a couple times, so if you can make it past that, it's kinda entertaining. Jon

-Jon, you have a beautiful plane! I love the 4-stroke sound, and the 7-up beverage in the cockpit! '92 is when I first got into R/C planes, your Ultimate is in great shape. Most of my planes look pretty "weathered" after a year's worth of transportation and hangar rash. BTW, your camera man did very good, it's tough trying to get video of a model plane in flight.
-Revy, I was thinking about breaking in my DLE 20 motor on a trainer plane first, but if you did the maiden on the 3rd tank, that doesn't seem like it's necessary.
I was planning to start building my Ultimate next winter, but I may not be able to wait that long, thanks for the motivation guys!

Git-r-dun!!

On the drawing fuel through the line issue...I think it's the length I'm using. With the tank on CG and the fuel fill on the side, mine needed to go to the side and then to the carb without getting in the way of any linkages. I'm going to re-think that set-up and see if I can shorten it with a little re-plumbing.<br type="_moz"/>

Revy, I like your style!
On another gas plane I have, I had some extra plumbing that had a slight air leak in it (you could see some air bubbles when the motor was running). After I fixed the air leak, it was also easier to prime. Would it help to elevate the tank a little? Just a thought.

Has to be another issue, my Tank is on CG with the DLE 20 on my Ultimate, no problems, my 30 had draw problems but was just to lean on low. Also i switched to a V2 ignition with shallow timing curve on the 30 and runs/starts better, just more tricky to tune. Only complaint with the 20 when it sat for a view days i have to flip it like forever, once it ran its good and starts great. The first 3 flights the 20 was starving fuel due to iceing [>:] it guess, since warmer no probs anymore.
Have a great one
Michael

Thanks, Micheal!

Hand started today no problems. I guess I just got lazy after the first couple tanks and haven't really tried to start it by hand without resorting to the starter after a few flips. Four fills today and all is good!

Great flying session and a remarkable landing with crosswind, I saw the flay and wind sock and I bet it was very windy.
I have been missing many weekends because of the wind, from 15 to 20 mph, an easy going for many but not for me, and I admire those that fly like you with almost any wind conditions.

Great video too.

Hi Alfred! No, don't be fooled by what looked like lots of wind via the flag and windsock. I doubt it was more than 7 or 8mph because we are wimps and don't fly much at winds greater. Those mics on cameras are super sensitive too and exaggerate actual conditions. We do usually have a crosswind though, but it is not a problem at winds that we fly in. Thanks for the compliments though. We are blessed in Salem with generally light winds except during storms or when a front blows through. And by that I mean we get calm to 8mph loads of the time. Very nice for RC flying! Jon

Just broke mine about 45min ago.

Front cabane snapped at the top bend on one side of it and let go at the fuse on the other. Brought it down safely and know the top is an easy fix...just got to get to the fuse issue and find a solution.

Sorry to hear about that, but I am sure that it is going to be ready to fly again with some minor repairs, Fuse is made by large ply pieces which can be glued again and reinforced by wood sticks, I bet that the extra weight will be a good choice for your engine, btw I hope that your engine is doing fine.

So tell us, what has happened?

The top part of the aluminum cabane at the bend is where it broke. A fatigue fracture like it was bent too many times. You know when you bend a piece back and forth 'til it breaks. A factory thing is my guess, freak incident. Upon further inspection all is well where that front cabane meets the fuse. I originally thought there might be a break there too.

The top is now repaired with a piece of spring steel leaf from my Byron Cap tailwheel that never got installed...tough stuff to cut, bend and drill. Grinder to cut, needed heat to bend and 6 bit sharpenings to drill 3 holes! Fabricated bracket fits underneath the original bends sharing the bolt holes. Good to go back up!

DOH! The engine. The DLE20 is awesome! Had 8900 show up on the Rcexl tach with the 17x6 Xoar. More than enough to get you out of trouble if flying at or below stall speeds. Vertical is unlimited as far as I'm concerned. She'll go straight up until I'm not comfortable flying the dot I see.

Thank-you for the offer, Micheal! Gotta love the hobby for generosity like that!

I think that we are all good here, now. If I see some other issues arise with them, I will get some 7075 bar stock and scratch build some.
