Now I just have to decide on an engine. I'll be using one from my stable. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
First off...it looks like this thing may only be able to hold a 4 oz. tank in the wing...that may make my decision for me.
Anyway:
.25 LA (don't laugh!) Without the baffle, it swings a 9x4 ok.
.28 MDS , great power, but the mid range seems touchy...need a good midrange.
.36 TT Pro..maybe..needs a new crank bearing..and it's a gas hog.
.40 Tower , Nothing bad to say about this motor.
.42 TT GP..again, great motor.
Just have to decide if I really want a .40 on a .25 sized plane for the latter 2.
I'll be using standard servos...so the extra power may help.

If I had to use one of those( the engines you already have),
I'd fix the TT .36 and run it with a mc muffler.
If you could spring for a new engine,to go with your new plane, you might want to look at the Webra speed .32gt.
This is a light weight engine with fantastic performance.
I have one on a 4LB sig fazer, that will pull out of a hover, and climb like a rocket.
It will run about 12min on 4oz of fuel/with 10x4 tai- pan prop.
I'm going to put on on my just completed Pen Knife.

Great plane. Fits in the boot of a small car and can be built in a day...........John

I have a Magnum 32 NIB that needs a home. The pen knife might be that place?

Default Good choice..

Atom,

Glad to hear you bought a Pen Knife. You'll have a blast.

As for the engine choice: If you're building and equiping it lightly (mini servos, receiver, etc), then maybe use your 28. If you're having serious mid-range issues, then this may not be the best choice... but in terms of power, it's perfect. If you're using standard servos and equipment, use the 36 TT. Although I've never used that particular engine in a Pen Knife, the OS 32 is very similar and I've had excellent results with it (as well as an OS 25 FSR).

John mentions you can build it in a day... you can... and covering it will take the longest! Ha!

ps: We've got some vids of the Pen Knife at the link below.

Cool, thanks for the input guys.
I'll have to use one of the engines from my stable, and I'm leaning toward standard servos. Micros would be great but this is a "laid off from work" project and high cost servos aren't in the budget. I like the compact size of the plane.. As mentioned above, very easy to transport. Hmmm...now to think about a trim scheme.
I hate waiting for stuff in the mail !
Oh..it appears this kit comes with pull/pull rudder linkages at least. Is this true ?

When I takked to the man that flys for Mr. Morris at Toledo ,about 5
years ago ,about the Pen Knife. He said that the landind speeds must
be kepted a little high to land good. So when I built mine I added
2 wing ribs to the wing. This made all the difference, I could now land
a less that 5 mph and it would not stall. I would love to buy another
Pen Knife kit if the price is right. [email protected]

Hey Buddy, if you have the plans, just build one from them. The only things you have to make are the ribs and a few fuse pieces. Making those are less work then making the ailerons/rudder/elevator imho.
Is the Pen Knife just a scaled down Knife? I was thinking of just getting my plans copyed to a smaller size, but dont know if the proportions are different.
thanks
