56" Yak 55 ???????
I thought I'd see what everyone over on RCU thought of this idea. I spend most of my time on the Pro Bro site, but thought there might be some interest here. It's a 56" Yak 55 with removeable wings for Sa 100.
First off the wing will have foiled ailerons. NACA 0010 airfoil. The Ailerons will be HUGE. Something different. Could be good, could be bad. I'll be the one to find out. Removable wings, just like the fusion style. I think that is the slickest and easiest, plus I think during a crash it survives the best. So far I've got almost all of the ribs drawn up and ready to go.
NOW. For the fuse. Who likes build up fuse. and who likes foam fuses. If I go built up, I'll incorporate epoxy tubes (ala. MJ65). If I go foam, I'll incorporate CF (fusion style).
If anyone has ideas or inquiries please let me know. I want to know what YOU want. I will probably send the parts out to be lasered by Lazer Lizard, or whoever is the best. I have no idea. So if anybody knows a good person to do the work, let me know.

Cool stuff, Iowa.
I like to see the experiments out there, since I have a hard time building anything according to the plans...
I think the glass tube style fuse (Mojo style) is more accessible to more builders (there are quite a few people uncertain of sheeting foam) and it seems to be more durable, if the way a Mojo bounces is any indication. I like both and it is easier to cover a sheet surface with a cool covering scheme, but durability is a good thing in a plane that flies about .1 of a mistake high.
What are the specs on this beast? More pics!

Those are some massive 'rons!!! Nice looking wing so far!
I just built a foam fuse for an old wing Johnny Mojo gave me... I think I completely, totally hate building foam fuses..... Waaaay too much work... But it is more ridgid... so we'll see... However, if you compare it to the Mojo65 fuse... There is a fair amount of work there.... I dunno.... Flip a coin...

It's just what you said Paul. Flip a coin. I only did the foam fuse. because it is easy to cut out and get the shape I wanted. I will however make this a built up fuse. IF the plane flies well. I just didn't have the time to design it as a built up fuse. and couldn't decide how I wanted it either.
The specs are as follows:
56" WS
58" length give or take a few 1/16" []
A tad over 800 sq. in for wing area.
Wing loading will be around 16-18oz.
And hopefully fall in the 6.5lb range with the Saito 100.

Way to go Iowa. You always do exceptional work. Those wings look like Fusion wings with ailerons on steroids. Maybe the plane will fly like its on steroids as well. Built up or foam core fuse is always a trade off. As far as I know I was the first one to incorporate the foam core fuse on my profiles. Did the first one a very long time ago for an electric version of my 47" Edge. Then progressed from there to the other profiles and finally the Fusion and twin carbn beams. If you have experience doing foam core wings then it isn't tough work. But CAing a bunch of sticks together is certainly pretty easy as well.

Hey Iowa,
Got it built yet?
Just waiting here patiently.... There's expectations and pressure now, you realize.

It'll work on it a bit this weekend. I'll laminate the balsa to the fuse and get it finished. Then work on the tail section.
I too am impatiently waiting. Maybe someone will magically appear out from under my bench and build it for me!!!

talk about barn door ailerons... Cant get to pro bro site at work any more, and my time at home is limited to spend much on the site. Keep the updates going. Looks impressive but I cant help but think ailerons that big are going to make it BIG TIME twitchy

Ok. Got the left wing pretty much done tonight. I need more 1/4" balsa for the bevels.
The tailfeathers are all framed up also, those were easy.
The fuse is under weight as the gorilla glue is curing. Shouldn't be long now.
Here's some pics

Iowa,
Looking good. One question though: Is your wing tube going to terminate like that half way between the ribs? Unless you tie that tube end point securely into the main spars above and below, you aren't gaining much structural strength by going past the previous rib. Did you basically use the Fusion wing building style on this one?

Yeah. The wing tube is where it is. I will glue in a piece of 1/4 balsa at the end of the tube. I'm not quite done with that wing. And Yes, it is pretty much like the fusion wing style.
I can't wait to get this bird in the air and see how it flies.

RE: 56" Yak 55 ???????
Here's a pic of her in the Bones. Everything is done except for adding some 1/4" balsa on the left wing for the hinge bevel. I ran out. I'll finish that next weekend and start on the covering. Anyone have a good yak 55 sceme???
So far I'm really happy with how it went together. Everything fits like it should. It's amazing how scratch built stuff goes together like that.
As far as weight is conerned. I don't have a good scale here to know, but from what I can tell it will come under 6.5lbs all up weight.
I can't wait to see it fly. Hopefully it will do well.

The scheme with the checkers on the front I've done already. I like the camo'd one, but don't wanna do that one. But I've picked one out and will get started this weekend.

Does it look done yet??!! Nice to see ya around Spacey. Been a while.?
Ok. I started covering the plane. Everything is going together well and looks great. I just hope it flies as good as it looks.
I got sick of putting trim on, so I thought I'd assemble it and see how it looks with clothes on, Much better.

Hi Iowa,
Ya see it's looks more and more done by the second!! Really looking good too! Keep going, we're all watching! It has been a while? I'm around keeping an eye on happenings. I haven't built a new profile in months though but that's due to the fact that I haven't crashed anything either. [8D] Still fly them on occasion thankfully. And yes still love them. LOL
Cheers
