Default Buying a kit from Canada

Does anyone know if there are any tariffs, duties, or customs charges applicable if I buy a kit from a Canadian modeler? It will be shipped through the postal systems. Anyone does this? Thanks for looking.

I've been told as long as the declared value is under $100 you are OK. I've gotten planes shipped from Canada for less money than stuff coming from California.

Default Declared value

What if I am paying $400 US for it? Does that make a difference?

JP Where is it being shipped from? Reason I ask is I'm 60 Miles from the Canadian border. Maybe if close enough can help save you the tariff/duty at customs.

JP,
If Scorpion can't help you, maybe I can. I live 8 minutes from the border. All I would have to do it fill out an inbound entry manifest for personal use, and ship it.

If you are not too concerned about insurance values do the following. Ask the Canadian shipper to describe the goods on the paperwork as "Toy Airplane" value $75.00.

I know, I Know, we do not like them to be called toys. But to save a few dollars why not?

Default The opposite

Gailvin:

Do you have any info on the opposite?

I would like to purchase items and have them held in the US for pickup in a month or 2 or 3. For myself to bring across the border. Or for someone else to pickup. Are you aware of any service in Sumas just south of you???

Save the $40 UPS charge etc.???

Slam,
Is the $40 what UPS charges for bringing stuff across?
If the CDN value of your stuff is under $1500 I could probably set something up for you (hmm....another new business maybe). You still have to pay PST & GST at the boarder but I believe that is all. I work in the US so I have things delivered to me all the time and pay the taxes at the boarder. They know me well there.
You can email me off line at [email protected]

I buy a ton of stuff from the US all the time. I never have anyone ship UPS. They charge $30 or more for brokrage fees!!! I always ask for USPS, Global Priority Air, Fedex, Puralator, etc. depending on how fast I want it. USPS is usually 4 to 10 days. With any of the above except UPS, you only pay GST and $5.00 custom fee.

Cheers!

Default USPS

Sorry to turn this around from original question but I had to reply to the above post. Yes USPS works for a lot of things although it can be expensive. But when a package is larger than USPS will handle it's a problem.
The $5 CDN charge from Canada Post is great compared to the $40 CDN of UPS. Now if only the TT Piper J3ARF was small enough for USPS. OH WELL!
