Default twin brushless motors

My brother bought a traxxas villian last month and is thinking of ways to put in a double brushless system. The only thing is that he doesnt know of another esc would be needed. So let me ask you, is a double brushless possible??

Are they possible? Sure. That's the short answer. The longer answer involves the capabilities of the present ESC, and the amount of power available (battery(s)). It also means determining if using two brushless motors will make the boat into a monster to handle, or turn it into a submarine? Would they? Beats me!

Independant ESC's are required.

Ever read a little magazine called R/C Boat Modeler? They recently did an article on putting BL motors in a Villain.

yea but to run twn brushless he would need to figure out a way to get the props to run the opposite direction of each other.

Plug it into the receiver...?

Just kiddin'

It rarely happens that a servo won't work out of the box, put the big arm on the shaft and try carefully(!) if you can turn it by hand, if that's not possible, it may be blocked internally.
In that case you can either open it up and see what's the matter, or send it back to the shop for warranty.

Also, some servo plugs can be put into the receiver the wrong way around, did you check that?

Regards, Jan.

Please ditch the gear box and put twin BL motors in. It'll require you to cut out the inner hull and move the batteries aft, since the motors would have to be further forward due to the lack of gears.

This to me is the only way switching to BL is worth it in a villain. It would be really interesting, since we've already done setups like twin BL on gears, single brushed, single BL, single BL on overdrive and jet-drive brushed and jet drive BL.

Just cut the hull out, remove the gearboxes, buy BL motors and mounts, mount the motors roughly where the batteries are now, put lipos behind the motors, upgrade your prop shafts and u-joints and you're all set. [8D] sounded easier in my mind than on paper. lol

Default RE: twin brushless motors

I just posted this in the official villain thread, but made it for the OP here, so here's a break down of prices, except for the cheap 540 motor upgrade(it's also the slowest.)

motor setups.....think I got all of them, if you think a part is missing it might be because I felt you did not need it.

Twin direct drive SV27 BL motors

[link=http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=dh-blcomboaq]motor and esc combo 2x[/link](SV27) $280
[link=http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-adj540mount]motor mounts 2x[/link] $40
[link=http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-traxxaspropkit]prop shaft upgrade 1x[/link] $45
[link=http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=grp-354.4]Graupner u-joints 2x[/link] $16

for motor couplers, these would work.
Product ID: cen-bj21
5mm to 4mm metal universal joint

Metal 5mm to 4mm Universal Joint. Fits 700 size motors to attach to a 4mm shaft. 2x $20
(sorry no link OSE doesnt have a page for the product, but it's there)

Total; $411 [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

Twin BL on stock gear boxes

motor and esc $280
shaft upgrade $45
G U-joints $16
total $341 Still pretty bad

Twin Brushed 700BB

motors 700BB Turbo 2x $90
second esc -waste of money
get ONE yes I said one, Jeti Navy 600 $75 or one Rc Hydros Victory esc $90

Steven states on the ad, that the jeti can handle twice the load of a 700bb and the Hydros Victory esc say it's rated for 90amps. I'd call steven first before deciding since I'm just going by what it says.
G U-joints $16
Shaft upgrade $45
[link=http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-drmount]dr motor mount[/link] $8
Motor couplers $20
Total $254-$269(assuming you can get away with one esc, and you will NEED lipos since this will be a hefty beast.)

Just gonna throw out some other setups

Single Brushless
Feigao 8-9XL 540 $70
[link=http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=xpo-blb100a]x-poer 100amp esc[/link] $80

make sure you can get regular and counter rotating props for your twin BL drive. I would look into that first, then decide if its worth doing in a villian. Just my 2 cents.
Cheers

running two motors of one esc is posible, its been done many times. you just solder a wire (same thickness as the motor leads) from one engines leads to the other. + to - if you want counter rotation.
Just me 2 cents,

No, it can not be done. Brushless ESCs' require a signal. If your motors are not closely timed, the signal will be distorted creating problems with the ESC.
