The proper way to check engine temps is after the engine and chassis are totally warmed up, this usually takes near half a tank of fuel. Temp guns are the only proper way to determine the temps and should be pointed directly at the glow plug after at least 2 to 3 minutes of full speed runs to acheive the max temps. Depending on engine size, .12 to .18 engines should run between 200-250 and .21 to .25 should run 210-270, over 270 is to hot and should be brought down by richening the needles or checking for air leaks. There are no specific temps an engine should run at but if its over 280 there is a problem.

If you don't want or can afford a raytec goto Radio Shack and pick up a IR Thermometer. That's what I use on my NTC3 and it's cheap SMALL and accurate. I hold the button and slowly move it to see the highest temp and work from there. I enlarged the hole in the roof of my car so it'll fit snuggly it now directly hits the glow plug and gets a perfect reading every time.

Yep.. I do it the same way as spad.
For me its an indispensible tool! (sp)
Also remember that hot weather means LESS air and the car runs slightly richer. In cold weather the air density is more, so the engine runs hotter but its compensated by the cooler air draft. FYI
Anyway.. back to class! (gotta love summer school.. leaves no time for R/C. I talk talk and thats all I do. haha)

picked up that IR temp gauge from shadiorack too.
great little thing.
I also aim it at my glowplug.
also just for grins I aimed it at the rest of the engine parts.
glow plug on savage 290 (yes hot but thats how it like to run with the wildcat fuel)
exhast stinger 250
engine block 285
exhast header at engine 320
these are aprox temps from memory so dont quote me on them

stick it in your ear!
No litterally do it. If you hold the button down you'll be able to move it around to get a good reading. It'll hit 98.5. If and when it does then it's accurate. Unless your body temp is wrong.
